porker··on You wouldn't steal a font
Looking forward to someone doing the same for Gill Sans and most of the Monotype catalog now that they've switched to annual licensing for webfonts (pay once use forever is gone)
porker··on Show HN: AI in JetBrains that doesn't suck
Good luck! Having used JetBrains IDEs (PHPStorm mostly) for what a decade(?) using VS code based editors like Cursor and Windsurf feel a step backward in spite of the AI, because the intellisense isn't there.

If you can get something that works inside JetBrains as well as these AI editors then you're in a "Take my money" position!

At the moment apart from your lack of support for PhpStorm your privacy policy wouldn't pass muster here, and I see no choice available on the models to use? E.g. Claude 3.5/3.7 or Gemini.

porker··on Estimating Camera Motion from a Single Motion-Blurred Image
Thank you, blind deconvolution and PSF sound like what I have been scratching around the edges of in my experiments, without knowing the right terms to search for to discover prior work. I shall dig into the literature!
porker··on Estimating Camera Motion from a Single Motion-Blurred Image
Going to read this in depth. I have been on and off trying to find a way to distinguish between in focus, motion blur (camera shake) and out of focus. Motion blur is surprisingly tricky to distinguish using a computer from the others. I can glance at a 2D Fft plot and tell, but the computer - not yet.
porker··on Show HN: 10 teams are racing to build a pivotal tracker replacement
What made Pivotal Tracker so popular? It had story points front and center, was that it?
porker··on uBlock Origin is no longer available on the Chrome Store
757 now.

I used to bookmark everything into Diigo. Then their Firefox extension stopped working... and I haven't got a cross-platform, cross-browser process up and running again.

Is there a tab session manager that does that, and lets me send tabs from my current session to another session? E.g. I'm on my "Writing C for a hobby" session and quickly search for something cooking related, and then need to send that to my cooking session?

porker··on uBlock Origin is no longer available on the Chrome Store
751 tabs open right now and growing.

Firefox copes fine. Me? Not so much (:

porker··on Postgres Just Cracked the Top Fastest Databases for Analytics
Have you upstreamed the change to DuckDB?
porker··on US examining whether UK's encryption demand on Apple broke data treaty
> Speaking as the person who pops up to defend the Online Safety Act

Do you defend the aims of the Act, the Act itself, or both?

I'm having to figure out compliance for a volunteer run, donation funded forum, and I think the Act itself could (and should) have been better written. I don't think Ofcom can handle it better than they are, because until it's tested in court they haven't the ability to say what the vague and undefined terms mean.

porker··on In memoriam
Note that the definition of "Services provided by persons providing education or childcare." is defined in law and narrow. I'm working with a charity providing online lessons for use in schools, where school children can post stuff others in their class can see. As far as I can discern they don’t fall into this exemption.
porker··on UK's hardware talent is being wasted
> Mostly staffed by the intellectual trophy husbands and wives of the financial sector.

Oh so true. Which helps to explain the number of levels of management in UK cultural institutions, because in London there are enough of these people who want a (poorly paid) role that it's better to have 3 layers of management when 1 would do.

porker··on UK's hardware talent is being wasted
JLR Gaydon is not in the metro area of Birmingham. It's in nice countryside and near a motorway which helps, but it's a fair commute out of Birmingham at rush hour to there. The nice surrounding towns/villages are expensive, and even the shitty ones aren't cheap (hello Banbury) as they're on the edge of commuter distance to London.

Derby I haven't lived in but know people who have. It's an old manufacturing town and hasn't much to offer graduates. Or anyone really. The Peak District is great, and if you can live out that way and commute in then do it. But again, you won't have similar people for local friends.

porker··on UK's hardware talent is being wasted
Profit goes out of the country, reducing investment and rich UK people to invest in new UK companies. It's the same problem with many of our companies being sold to foreign investors: profits are taken outside the country (as we did to other countries in the 19th century and earlier) so our labour enriches other countries while our country gets poorer.
porker··on UK's hardware talent is being wasted
(UK resident, born and bread) Yes this drives me absolutely mad. I'm a poor risk taker and can come up with all those reasons something's a bad idea, but when I've made up my mind to take the risk I want supportive people around not people who would rather you never tried anything outside their "comfort zone".

And the problem runs in families. This is not therapy but every time I talked to my parents about an idea it would be dammed with faint praise or I'd be told I'm wasting my time. It's taken 20 years to work out that the more they dissed an idea is the better it actually was.

porker··on Phi 4 available on Ollama
For structured output from anywhere I'm finding https://github.com/BoundaryML/baml good. It's more accurate than gpt-04-mini will do on its own, and any of the other JSON schema approaches I've tried.
porker··on Is XYplorer really written in VB6?
What did you script in XYPlorer? I've used Explorer for so long that's a feature I can't even imagine what I would use it for.
porker··on Why are UK electricity bills so expensive?
Normally pay monthly by Direct Debit, but because usage varies so much between summer and winter we assess and estimate usage annually.
porker··on The Birmingham Blade: geographically tailored urban wind turbine designed by AI
I agree, however our 5kW solar roof in southern England has barely generated 1kWh/day since October. Apart from that still period in November we've got wind, generally 10-15mph at roof height.

A feasible home wind turbine would be a good addition in winter.

Or buying a share of a massive wind turbine, but the maths of Ripple Energy have never stacked up when I've looked at it.

Agree with you. My only addition is to remember to read PECR (https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/direct-marketing-and-pr...) alongside GDPR.
porker··on Pollen: A publishing system written in Racket
What is your preferred digital book publishing system?
porker··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
In the USA is there any concept of prior art when considering trademark applications, like there is with patents? If "YCombinator hosting" had been commonly used by businesses, and YC decided to trademark that phrase, would the prior usage be taken into account (and void the trademark application)?
porker··on The ACF plugin on the WordPress directory has been taken over by WordPress.org
> But that's the problem. Wordpress is used for much much more. You can use it as a CMS, LMS, news platform, saas platform, and much more. You can literally customize it to the bone.

And that freedom is also its weakness. "When all you have is a hammer, ..." comes to mind.

I've had to rescue enough booking systems, LMS's, and SaaS platforms built on WordPress with terrible performance or 20% of features not working to think this is a terrible approach.

> Ghost is a good alternative to wordpress, only if you're using it for 2-3 specific usecases.

That's no bad thing. More specialised tools help with performance and UX for those tasks.

porker··on WP Engine is banned from WordPress.org
Mirroring is not difficult, I've done it in order to perform code analysis on plugins at scale.
porker··on Show HN: JAQT – JavaScript Queries and Transformations
In a similar vein is https://pbeshai.github.io/tidy/ which I've used for 3+ years. It's a really nice lightweight transformer.

I've also used https://github.com/uwdata/arquero once (better performance for large datasets).

porker··on Show HN: Konty – A Balsamiq-alternative lo-fi wireframe tool for modern apps
Wrong tool for this - I'd recommend https://bpmn.io/ instead.
porker··on Dublin Core, what is it good for?
We did. I don't think we comprehended how others would use it for their own commercial gain.
porker··on Percona Everest: open-source automated database provisioning and management
> A typical deployment will have multiple replicas, with (hopefully) small replication lag. Those should be able to be promoted to be the new primary within a minute.

What happens within that minute to database writes?
