porjo··on Ask HN: What’s a good laptop for software development at around $2k?
>> Avoid Microsoft Surface Laptops, which require patches to run Linux,

> But that screen on the Surface Laptop!

I've been considering the Surface Laptop for the 3:2, high PPI screen. According to this [0] so long as you have a recent stock kernel, the only things that don't work are pen and touchscreen (touch screen requires kernel patches on Intel arch, AMD doesn't support at all). I can live without both.

porjo··on Ask HN: Email saying my Amazon Route53 domains will be transferred?
FYI, I received this email from my .au domain registrar (not AWS) a week ago:

Hey, just a quick update on your .au domain(s). Our backend provider for .au is changing their backend provider, and they'll be sending two emails explaining the move (as required by the .au registry): one on December 20th and the followup on January 18th. To be clear, absolutely nothing will be changing to your account, and you don't have to do anything with the emails... they're purely informational. We're just preemptively letting you know so you won't be alarmed.

And yesterday received an email from Hexonet like the one quoted by OP.

porjo··on Is Big Necessarily Bad?
A fascinating presentation by Geoff Huston, chief scientist at APNIC.

From the abstract: "...looking at the economic thinking that lead to anti-trust legislation in the United States over a century ago and its application into today’s world. Do these digital giants [FAANG] pose a distortional threat to markets for good and services in this digital space simply by virtue of their size?"

> You can buy a used Pixel 3a for around $80 on Ebay

It's worth noting that GrapheneOS recommend Pixel 4a or newer for best support: https://grapheneos.org/faq#recommended-devices

porjo··on End of an Era: NTSC Finally Goes Dark in America
slightly offtopic, but something that bugs me about OTA broadcast DTV is the program guide. (I'm in Australia which uses DVB-T, other standards may differ). The guide is so slow to load, regardless of the TV set. It also seems to require the TV to scan each channel to pickup that channel's guide data so you're left with gaps in the guide data until the TV has scanned each channel. It seems like a missed opportunity. If we're going digital, why can't guide data be instantly available for all channels?

porjo··on YouTube-dl has received a DMCA takedown from RIAA
I guess it was only a matter of time, the more popular it became. I have Youtube Premium and still use this utility every day for legitimate reasons (converting talk videos to audio file that I can listen to offline). Sad day for youtube-dl but I expect there will be many contenders to fill the void.
porjo··on Mozilla's Speech-to-Text Engine Is at Risk Following Layoffs
Mozilla senior leadership have also been caught up in the politically correct mantra that pervades much of silicon valley, which imho is a huge distraction from making great products. Case in point: https://mobile.twitter.com/newstephen/status/106048929137627...

porjo··on Open-Source Virtual Background
I'm confused. Parent was asking about virtual background. I've checked with meet.jit.si using Chrome and there is no virtual background option in the menu.
porjo··on Jitsi Meet features update
I just did a quick test using latest Jitsi meet running in Chrome and it does remember my external webcam settings (saved to browser localStorage). Looping audio is something that happens on alternative platforms too, so I'm not sure that's a fair criticism of Jitsi.

porjo··on Health Experts Want to Stop Daylight-Saving Time
> In Australia, in Queensland, we've been trying to get this outdated state to start using daylight savings for years.

Speak for yourself. I live in the south east and don't want DST.

> 95% of the population is in the south east.

That's not accurate - where did you get that figure? Regardless, Western Australia has an even greater percentage of its population in the southern part of the state than Queensland, and it voted against DST four times over the last 40 years.

> it's so bloody hot here in summer.

Not to mention by the time you go to bed the temperature is cooler without DST.

porjo··on Reducing risk of automotive death
The state of Queensland just introduced Australia's toughest penalties: AUD$1000 fine and four demerit points for touching your phone when behind the wheel (even when stopped at lights).

porjo··on Nets on the outlets of drainage pipes save waterways from pollution

porjo··on Nets on the outlets of drainage pipes save waterways from pollution
