If you wanted to project an appearance of having read the article before injecting your opinion, you failed wildly.
popularrecluse··on Research into homeopathy: data falsification, fabrication and manipulation
Packaging on homeopathic products should have at least the same size warnings as tobacco products.
popularrecluse··on Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the U.S., allowing him to go free
Trump has caused more damage to U.S. intelligence interests than Assange ever did. Trump's unpunished actions make the prosecution of other violators look like pantomime.
popularrecluse··on Nasa is hacking Voyager 1 Back to Life
Wow. 60,000 km/h for almost 50 years, and it still isn't even a light-day away yet. And our closest known exoplanet is 4.2 light-years away.

We're stuck here, y'all. Better start getting along.

popularrecluse··on When do we stop finding new music?
Just happened to listen to Steady Diet of Nothing the other day. Maybe the first time in almost 30 years. That music is as good as ever. And could Reclamation be a more relevant song in 2024?

Reminds me that I haven't been to Slashdot in a long time. Darl McBride was the bête noire of the moment ~ 21 years ago.

popularrecluse··on I downgraded to an iPhone 11 Pro Max – and there’s not much I’m missing
The 120 Hz refresh is something I slightly noticed and did appreciate when upgrading. Now when going back to an older device 60 Hz is jarring.
popularrecluse··on The year Lou Reed gave up on music
Not everyone makes music for the consumption and enjoyment of other people. Sometimes it's just a side-effect.

popularrecluse··on What's the Difference Between Empathy, Sympathy, and Compassion?
12 year old me playing D&D: "What is the purpose of having separate intelligence and wisdom stats? They are the same thing!"

Older me: "Oh."

popularrecluse··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
You'll never get a straight answer because San Francisco represents nothing more to them than a symbolic confirmation of whatever bias they already had.

They'll ignore mitigating factors that might not fit their narrative - things like the Reagan repeal of MHSA, the bussing of 'problem' citizenry from other states to SF, police 'quiet quitting', among countless others.

Truth is, there's plenty of blame to go around, but one side deals in bad faith because they like it to be this way because it makes them feel right.

popularrecluse··on Where have all the sacked tech workers gone?
Was laid off Thursday after 10 years. This is exactly what I'm doing for the immediate future. In no hurry to go through the dog and pony show of groveling and prostrating myself for the opportunity to make money for someone else.

There will always be an acceptable range of discourse in any society, and those that in their own ignorance and confusion spread ideas that hurt the stability and well-being of that society can expect pushback. Sorry if you wanted to say whatever bullshit you want without a challenge.

If you don't like it disconnect your internet, as you'd say.

popularrecluse··on Spotify reducing employee base by about 6%
I responded to a comment upstream from yours on your comment, because yours was the last I read and I was continuing the train of thought. Sorry for the confusion.

We just live in a world now where propagating false and dangerous misinformation is merely offering a differing point of view.

We were happy to let subject-matter experts help build the modern world, but then turn on them as we seek out the information that comports with the way we wish the world to be. It's good to be skeptical, but a very significant portion of the population has serious epistemic deficiencies.

popularrecluse··on How Pitfall builds its world (2021)
You may find many of the Activision titles still hold up. River Raid, Megamania, Seaquest, Frostbite. There's a lot of fun to still be had in those games, especially if you're competing head-to-head.

But for my money the most fun you can have on an Atari 2600 today is 4-player Warlords with well-maintained paddles.
