Bingo!
P.S. Intended to be brutal, think about it.
Sorry on bad english, 4 beers + not primary language :-)
You should look at SIP. It's combination of HTTP,SMTP,... and is really great protocol for hackers and creative people. Bad side of SIP is that it's friking huge, but this is because there are lot of extensions (btw even IM is SIP extension).
Debian guys should really do something like OpenBSD package flavors. Sometimes you just don't need X,Y or Z support and it's pain to do this kind of stuff with Debian. I'm not sure if that is even possible in such rigid package managemenet system. Other thing would be to allow files/libs as dependencies. Those two things would give people more freedom and flexibility, but they are from start trying really hard to be anal with packages (even given the fact that .deb system is , at the same time, best and worst thing about Debian). So, guess, just forget about it.
2. You can, mostly, work on ideas you think are worth doing. This is really awesome because worth is subjective term and only way to see you were right is to do it (your own way). "Talk is cheap, show me the code".
3. With right license you can take others code to fill parts of your project (either temporary or permanent). Helps in time consumption and agility. Ofc, you can always rewrite whenever and whatever you want. Some people think that reinwentihg the wheel is bad, but it all depends on situation. Sometimes it's even better then using bad code.
4. If you share code, someone will eventually modify it, so you can choose to integrate changes back (if worth merging). Only problem here is situation when people are using non-compatible licenses.
5. More hacker's culture in FLOSS in general.
C doesn't need so many changes like C++, that is the fact and advantage. C++ introduces huge bunch of new stuff, you know add, add, add, then fix, fix, fix. At the end you get overengineered buerocratic 'give me my 5%' language.
So, in C99 some stuff are very useful like variable length arrays, restrict keywords, variadic macros... these are not cosmetic. And btw, even for that you don't need C99 to c89 converter, if you want c89 compatibility use macros. But, hey, macros are ugly, right? They are ugly but they don't make my eyes bleed as some stuff in C++.
So yes, i'm twisting your arm, sorry about that, but it needs to be twisted ;-)
P.S. Your compiler is your choice, just don't force others to use it.
This can look like nitpicking, but it's really annoying to again and again hear such things from mouth of C++ gurus.
Now give it to me ;-)
