A lot of people willingly get into scams because they think they're entering a position to be "in on it." Lots of ponzi scheme victims are like this. They know it's a ponzi schene and they know how ponzis work, but they think they'll be one of the people who cashes out before it ends. The breaking point is when the wrong person tries to cash out and they realize it already ended a while ago.
That's probably why Google tolerates all the blatant fraud against them by the avalanche of spam sites ruining the service. They're frauding google but google is frauding advertisers and they wouldn't be able to commit fraud to such a high degree if they couldn't tell advertisers that their ads got 10 gorillion fake impressions.
It's sad how fast some people are these days to just say "nope too hard, can't be done." Especially when it's something that WAS accomplished 20, 30, even 40+ years ago in some cases! How can someone watch a satellite train fly through the heavens and think pattern matching algorithms are an unsolved, even unsolvable problem? Such doomerism.
Google search still has that feature where the little preview blurb will bolden where it matches parts of your query so you can see what context the pattern appeared in. Always very useful but now it gives you a pretty good look at what google replaced your actual query with. Since I started paying attention to this, I've realized that most of the cases where I need to add a bunch of excluded keywords, I'm actually just gradually twisting googles arm into searching what I wanted to search. It takes a lot of excluded keywords sometimes until it finally runs out of ideas for stuff to replace my entire query with.
I don't know where else to ask this but it's killing me. Does anyone know what the hell that GitHub physical CD thing was about? Did anyone in the world get theirs?
One of the defining characteristics of AI turned out to be utter and profound facelessness. The scraping, the data centers, the slop content, it's like it all comes from thin air. Nobody is talking about who is really doing all this or why, because it's always just coming from... somewhere else outside of our place.
I would love to do this. It's shocking how little Android offers for the hardware it uses. Recently I was thinking if I could install Windows 98 on my phone, even that would be better. At least I could have more than one app open without it burning all my work just because I dared to check info on a web page while filling a form.
Surprisingly cool site. I've seen lots of sites for RSS feeds but they aren't any good because they just dump their mountain of every feed that was ever known to exist, and there's not really any aspects of curation or discovery. RSS feeds themselves embody the exact way I think the internet should work, where the internet itself is the platform. However it's very nice to get some help finding new stuff.
For me this fills a pretty interesting niche. If your device is very open and already lets you do whatever you want, koreader will seem really bloated and annoying. But if all you can do is install "apps", then you can just install koreader and have access to everything you would probably want a custom OS for, such as SSH. And you can have it all without voiding your warranty or modifying the firmware in any way.
I don't see what's so offensive about it. If it had huge boobs or something that would be one thing, but it's just a regular mascot character. Out of all the "necessary evils" that get inserted to keep a service above water, that anime girl image is the least offensive one I can think of. It's still completely normalized to show ads for porn on sites like youtube. Captchas are an insult, with the "photo challenge" type being a full on slap in the face most of the time. I would look at 1000 anime girls to avoid one street sign captcha.
Did you know GitHub removes things they deem to be malware? Malware is a very subjective classification, so who watches the watchmen? How do we know they won't start removing things that are deemed harmful just for competing with Microsoft products? Hell, letting them have a mechanism to moderate the site's content at all is a huge risk to society's freedom and continued existence. Aliens could arrive any time and shoot mind control beams at the GitHub admins which compel them to delete everything at once. The only way to prevent the future holocaust is if I'm allowed to typo squat GitHub repos to distribute viruses and someone else has to pay for it. If it's not safe for me to do that, GitHub is not safe for anyone.
This sounds great. We've hit some kind of scaling problem where "algorithms" are not up to the task of finding worthwhile stuff among the solar masses of junk being pumped out daily. And even if they were, the amount of exploitation is so fathomless that I don't think it could ever work.
It's time for society to rediscover the power and immense value of real curation.
Even with non experts, just looking through another human's playlist of recommended songs beats the crap out of algorithms. I've found so much more music that way than with youtube suggestions or whatever spotify does.
We're talking about two different things. I've never doubted that there will always be some people out there pumping and dumping their meme asset until we're all dead. There's still people trying to rally the gamestop thing. But I wanted a currency man. I wanted to buy stuff from artists and tradespeople without christian fundamentalists at some credit card company having to like it. I wanted to truly own my money. And I wanted to be able to buy stuff like food with it, WITHOUT losing money to exchange fees before I can ever use it anywhere.
In those regards, distaste for bitcoins many showstopping flaws absolutely made crypto in total go away. Even the people who like it won't talk about it anymore because it's embarrassing. If it was common knowledge that there are other currencies that don't have Bitcoins problems, we could have been in a very different place. But almost 20 years later I still can't use any cryptocurrency for anything except an alternative to Western Union for the literal one person I've ever known who's actually willing to use crypto for a real purpose.
As for the air conditioning or whatever, it doesn't matter. Everyone already left.
Having everything was part of the marketing. It was just a complete lie. Everyone had that moment with Netflix where they realized every movie is in every category and there isn't nearly as much on there as it seems.
I remember ads that exaggerated things that suck about rental stores. One of them was about all the cool movies being thrown out and replaced with 30 copies of Pony Adventure 4. They never explicitly stated that Netflix will always have the solution to those problems forever, but they implied it as hard as they legally could.
Wow I can't believe this lightning crap is still going. No wonder crypto is still a joke, you clowns are still pushing Bitcoin like it's the be-all-end-all of crypto, and not the first ever reference implementation of blockchain. It's so obsolete at this point that it's not even funny anymore. It's sad. I wanted so badly for crypto to be a thing. But it never will because of these people. And I don't even want it anymore if it has to be bitcoin until we're all dead. All of the criticisms of crypto are 100% accurate when regarding Bitcoin. It destroys the environment and the parts economy simultaneously with it's ridiculous hardware requirements. Lightning doesn't make that go away. I remember 6 years ago there was already reams of new blockchains that made Bitcoin look like the cotton gin. And they will never be used for anything. Please switch to scalping pokemon cards from kids or something, it would be less despicable and damage the world less.
And the subtitles themselves will be beautifully authored making full use of features like using color coding and positions to show who's talking. Sometimes you'll even get Area 51 technology where text appearing on signs will be edited to appear translated using only subtitles.
This feels like such a tired subject now. That's not to say don't complain, it's just surprising that we still haven't hit any kind of breaking point with this. I thought we were going to have a big die-off followed by re-consolidation. But somehow this is sustainable? Who is supporting all these stupid services?
On mine, koreader is an app that you launch, and the stock interface seems to unload completely until you exit koreader. Then the whole "OS" is still there untouched and you can get books from hell dimensions like Overdrive.
Despite never using the stock interface anymore I've left it alone because it's not much of a bother to relaunch koreader or Plato on the rare occasions that I have to.
I wish there hadn't been that weird conspiracy against bookmarks that google and mozilla collaborated on. I keep trying to get back into the habit of using bookmarks, but I keep forgetting they exist again whenever the bookmark bar turns itself off for no reason.
While I'm at it, also screw mozilla for messing up the browser history so badly.
I'm still not over the fact that they used to lie so hard about the number of results, and just quietly removed the result counter entirely when people noticed. Any explanation of that would have been nice. No way was there ever 17 billion cake recipes in the world.
