pooploop64··on An explanation of our search results
I'm still not over the fact that they used to lie so hard about the number of results, and just quietly removed the result counter entirely when people noticed. Any explanation of that would have been nice. No way was there ever 17 billion cake recipes in the world.
pooploop64··on Modern decor may be straining people's brains
Lawns are for much more than just flexing. It's an outdoor part of your property which is flat and open enough to use for various activities and purposes. I don't know where people get such a cynical idea that this is THE reason anyone has lawns.
pooploop64··on Show HN: Fortress – a stealth Chromium so your agents stop getting blocked
There actually is a well defined demarcation point where the site owners wishes do apply. It's called... A demarc point! Everything that happens past this point is by definition entirely in the control of the admin. Which includes closing the door on whoever they wish. This is a technical reality, not something you can effect with opinions or wanting things more than other people want other things. It might seem contradictory but this is actually the main thing that makes the internet as free as it is.
pooploop64··on Price per 1M tokens is meaningless
Tokens in a casino is pretty accurate if you think about it. You never really know what you'll get so it's tempting to "roll" over and over, thinking every roll puts you closer to a bellringer. It can even get addicting for some people.
pooploop64··on No LLM Code in Dependencies
In my experience it's always been easier to work with terrible human programmers because the terribleness of their code is inherently bound to human comprehension. Of course I've seen some absolutely massive messes created by humans. But generally if a human wrote it then a human can understand it. Also it takes an amount of time and effort for a human to create this kind of mess which tends to actually be more effort than what a more experienced person will expend to fix what is wrong with it. LLMs flip all this on it's head. Plus there's the thing the Godot statement talks about. I have a completely different willingness to help a struggling noob rise through the same trajectory I did, compared to fixing someone else's LLM code.
pooploop64··on No LLM Code in Dependencies
I think I'm also going to refer people to the Godot foundation's statement on this from now on. Too often people try to lay it out like a moral conundrum, or some kind of purity test for "real" programmers vs larpers, but that's all just lips flapping. Meanwhile there are real-life practical consequences that follow taking AI contributions, and the Godot foundation has done a great job articulating what those things are. It's very nice for there to be a voice like saying these things.
pooploop64··on Job seekers giving up: Labor force participation falls to lowest in 50 years
The labor shortage crisis has been going for over 200 years now, yet nobody can name a company that has died or otherwise suffered negative consequences as a result of it.
pooploop64··on Winamp Skin Museum
Custom css email themes aka "stationary", which other people can see on emails from you. These are still a very prominent part of email but I don't see anyone expressing their individuality with it anymore. It feels like a huge blast from the past to get one with any kind of theme that doesn't look like something a bank would use.

There was also "smileys" but I never used those because smileys were considered tacky. Yet it's the thing that stuck harder than anything else.

pooploop64··on Xsnow "protestware" in Debian
I really really really hope the point of stuff of like this is NOT to make martyrs of randomly selected people in a foreign country. That would be an absolutely demented thing to try for. Not to mention the arrogance of thinking you need to show foreign people what their country is like. They know that better than you.
pooploop64··on Crypto firms have spent $189M so far on 2026 US election, report says
I guess the threat of this is what's unclear. The cryptobros are going to take over the world and then do what exactly?
pooploop64··on Anonymous GitHub account mass-dropping undisclosed 0-days
RCE has no meaning either in these situations. The "remote" part is usually an ssh root session if it means anything at all.
pooploop64··on Windows 10 quietly gets one more year of support and updates
Old games only
pooploop64··on Show HN: Make PDFs look scanned (CLI or in the browser via WASM)
I've been in situations where I had to supply a digital version of a signed document but the person asking for it required that it be physically printed off to be signed and then scanned back in. Some policy thing. I think it would technically be fraud to use this but that's one use I thought of.

The description however seems like the creator just likes how scanned documents look. They describe it like how analogue music fans describe vinyl records. I guess everything is nostalgic to someone out there eventually.

pooploop64··on The (real) dead economy theory
It's like I said, the degree to which productivity is in the equation.

Money just looping around until settling on a few people, otherwise doing nothing else = zero productivity, zero value

Action which results in a bit of productivity = a bit of value

Action with results in lots of productivity = lots of value

I'd say the exact degree of separation where it becomes "a problem" is roughly equal to the exact number of sand grains that form a pile. I can tell you one area where society is already suffering greatly from dead economy and that's the housing market. The downstream impact of that industry not being realistic is happening right now.

Also I would like to refer people to a story called "The Golden Goose." Everyone seems familiar with it but it doesn't seem like most people have seen the end.

pooploop64··on ChatGPT's image generator can be manipulated to produce violent, sexual content
Always one of the same two excuses.

1. It actually is working perfectly you just don't have smart enough eyes to see it.

2. Making stuff work is too hard, and expecting that from us is the real thing ruining society.

Going for number 1 here is crazy. If I got that email, my mind would certainly run but my response would say "sorry but we're not supposed to be dealing in snuff porn here" which IS a directive ChatGPT is supposed to have. Like hello you are on earth right?

pooploop64··on The (real) dead economy theory
There used to be much more of a belief that the reason this stuff has an appreciable value to speak of is because it's either creating a channel for society's productivity or it's creating a position to skim pennies off of society's productivity. But less and less does it feel like productivity is even in the equation anymore. What the quoted statement describes is much closer to a Ponzi scheme than what finance is actually supposed to be about, but it's getting harder and harder to tell the difference.

Also if the cutoff point for raising concerns about this was hundreds of years ago that really sucks for everyone alive today.

pooploop64··on OpenAI Losses Increased Nearly 8X in 2025, with Spending Hitting $34B
If anything this is MORE evidence that the infinite money printer will be coming online any second now! Yep aaaaany second now... OH THERE IT- awww one of you guys wasn't praying hard enough.
pooploop64··on Banned Book Library in a Wi-Fi Smart Light Bulb
Reminds me of the "banned book" table every book store has now. The place where so called banned books are given the most prominent display in the whole store with discounts if you buy a novelty pencil or something alongside it.

I thought we would all be over this after the dr seuss thing.

pooploop64··on Peopleless economy? Not technically impossible
Im getting really tired of these cloudflare anti-ddos screens. They take forever, often literally. There's another one of these that shows an anime girl, whatever that one is, it's way better.
pooploop64··on Notes on DeepSeek
We have a lot of propaganda to deprogram regarding it being evil to do that.
pooploop64··on Show HN: Command Center, the AI coding env for people who care about quality
Not trying to accuse anyone of anything but this sounds exactly like one of those scam courses that turns out to be a pyramid scheme centered around selling the course to other people.
pooploop64··on Ask HN: What are tools you have made for yourself since the advent of AI?
I have a bunch of ffmpeg scripts for specific things like compressing to 10MB for discord.
pooploop64··on Show HN: FFmpeg WebCLI – Full FFmpeg in Browser, Offline PWA, No Uploads(WASM)
I agree something like a folder or file icon would be more accurate.
pooploop64··on I don't want my search engine to think for me
We have been getting a ton of LLM generated essays talking about how bad LLMs are. It happens so much that it feels like a new kind of engagement bait.
pooploop64··on Cheese Paper: a text editor specifically designed for writing
Another version of this idea that's been around for a while is CherryTree. I would use it a lot more, but there's not really a way to use your notebook on mobile due to it using a special database format that nobody cares about. I love the idea of this program's data instead being a regular folder of regular plaintext files that you can do anything with. In a perfect world everything would be like this, where your files are just your files, and client programs just help you use those files in more effective ways.
pooploop64··on What Is a Dickover?
Fanboys Annoyances List for Ublock. Install it on your family's computers when they aren't looking. It aims to filter ALL this crap.
pooploop64··on What Is a Dickover?
>What won't help is complaining that the largely free products we get don't work the way we want them to. This makes no sense and seems bad-faith on multiple levels.
pooploop64··on If you let AI do your writing, I will come to your house and kill you
My way of detecting it has become less about patterns and cliches and more about the content of the text itself. The article gives many examples of AI generated restaurant descriptions and while they are written very similarly, the bigger problem is that the text has no actual meaning in the first place. It's just pointless descriptions of what a restaurant is, but written in different cliched ways. A human could rewrite the same content to not use cliches and it would still clearly be AI due to how worthless it is.
pooploop64··on Apparently Google hates us now
I'm surprised it's still a standard thing to let us see the message getting typed up before it's finalized. The term "literally 1984" gets thrown around a lot but wow what a dystopian feeling when that happens. It's so much creepier than if it just said "sorry that question violates our guidelines" without showing anything.
pooploop64··on Apparently Google hates us now
This is a funny (if it wasn't so sad) aspect of enshittification that was revealed to me through Chinese electronics.

There is a line we cross where the lowest quality, most bottom dollar crap is actually better than it's actively malicious "premium" counterparts.

It's like if a company spent billions of dollars creating the most perfect hammer that also happens to make itself bend to miss nails if you don't use the approved Hammertech GripGlove that plays ads and is slippery.

Or you could use a random rock with a flat side, which is a much better hammer than that in every way. In the exact same fashion, Yandex blows Google out of the water. Not because they have smarter people running it or because the code is more elegant or because they have more money. They just don't have the means or motivation to actively screw with you to the same degree as Google, and that makes it better.

Anyone at this point could make a better search engine than google just by running a basic text search algorithm and not doing anything else, it just so happens that Yandex never bothered to go as far beyond that as the mainstream ones.
