pontifier··on The Schwarzschild Defence
I believe there's a directionality component that happens when you fall into a black hole as well. The directions out of the black hole begin to constrict into a point above you, while directions that end at the singularity become more and more spread out, until every direction leads to the singularity as you cross the event horizon.

Edit: this Forbes article describes this effect. https://www.forbes.com/sites/startswithabang/2018/01/19/what...

pontifier··on The Schwarzschild Defence
I saw a very interesting lecture on YouTube about what you'd see as you fall through an event horizon.

Basically you catch up to everything that has ever fallen into the black hole before you.

My guess is that it would look like another big bang.

pontifier··on AirJet – Solid-state chip for active device cooling
Interesting, I had skipped over that video several times because I thought it was going to be talking about peltier coolers. This is very cool.

I can't wait to get a thousand of them and build a silent vacuum cleaner.

pontifier··on The enduring mystery of an aggressive FBI raid near Area 51
I showed it to the Police Chief. He resigned not long after that. There's too much fishy stuff to keep track of here.
pontifier··on The enduring mystery of an aggressive FBI raid near Area 51
Lol, I have video of the police trying to disable my security system too! No record of the entry was ever made, no warrant was ever issued.

pontifier··on Tell HN: Sometimes you don't realise how bad something is until you leave
I resonate with this so much! I've been bashing my head against red tape for the last 3 years. It's totally demoralizing, and has messed me up pretty good.

I know what I'm capable of, and when I compare it to what I've done lately, it just crushes my spirit.

pontifier··on The enduring mystery of an aggressive FBI raid near Area 51
Someone has to fight it or this stuff will keep happening. If they get away with it they'll keep doing it. They're pushing the limits, and seeing how far they can go. It has to stop.
pontifier··on Nuclear explosion impact on humans indoors (2022)
From the pretty pictures, it looks to me like duck and cover in a corner is your best bet.
pontifier··on The physics behind building an enduring soap bubble
Awesome! I've always loved bubbles. I really need to do more with them.

Out of curiosity, did you develop this formula or find it somewhere? Also, what surprised you the most while working on this?

Tell me more!

pontifier··on Burn-out, daunting work, overstretched, and it's just too much
I'm starting to think that we, as humans, are collectively brute forcing the world around us. Each of us has the things we see in front of us, the things we think are important, and if they turn out to really be important the solutions we come up with spread.

Because each of us has different experiences and perspective, we all explore a different part of the solution space. Of course we think what we're doing is important, that's why we do it.

The big problem is that we all deserve to live a good life, even if only some of us are lucky enough to find these difficult to find solutions.

pontifier··on Create optimal conditions for lucky things to happen to you (2020)
"See a penny, pick it up. All the day you'll have good luck!"

That phrase has become a bit of a motto for me. In my mind, luck has multiple components.

The first is awareness of an opportunity... Noticing the penny.

The second, and possibly the more critical part comes from action. Many people may have seen that opportunity before, but did they act on it? In the simple case of a penny, the answer is no... otherwise it wouldn't be there.

Both parts are required.

pontifier··on Japanese manhole mass production process [video]
I'm in total awe of manufacturing processes both automated and manual. When watching the Japanese factory I could tell that safety was a high priority. I've heard stories about metal pouring gone wrong, and could see that that process was well controlled.

In the sprocket manufacturing shop, I kept thinking of ways those processes could go wrong. In particular that first press with the foot pedal made me cringe. Yet the shop seemed successful, and they produced sprockets. I wouldn't care to guess how many sprockets per finger that place averages though.

Either way, finding a process that can be repeated for profit seems magical. It's a far cry from the uncertainty that seems so widespread right now.

pontifier··on DensePose from WiFi
Sign me up for the security system. This seems like a total game changer if it's possible to do real human detection and tracking in a secure location.
pontifier··on UK Police to get new powers to shut down protests before disruption begins
I was arrested for protesting against a government funded project just last month. This is in the US, in a small town. They likely haven't had much experience with protesters, so have no idea about the can of worms they opened.

Honestly, police will do whatever those in power want them to do, rights be damned. I'm so sick of people who abuse their power. The thing is, people keep stretching the limits of what they can get away with, until they can't get away with it anymore. If we don't use the rights we have, then we won't have them for very long.

I intend to pursue my case as far as it takes to make a point.

pontifier··on Whipper: Accurate Audio CD Ripping
I've done a little bit of testing with flac and wav files. It is actually possible to convert a flac file back into an identical, bit exact wav file.
pontifier··on Ask HN: Can you crowdfund the compute for GPT?
I guess I may be behind the times on some of these AI efforts, but I'm guessing that the model involves a big black box blob of data.

I'd be interested to know how models evolve with additional training, and wonder if there are additive identities that would allow two separately trained models to be combined.

pontifier··on AI-powered lawyer will be first of its kind to represent defendant in court
I'm imagining a dystopian future where everyone wears a legal advice headset that is constantly whispering to them about things they are doing, or need to change to avoid a lawsuit. Kind of like a continual game of twister where if you misstep, all the watching legal AIs jump on you, immediately serving you electronically, with court dates pre-scheduled and all the evidence they need to win the case already submitted.
pontifier··on Ask HN: What's the most important problem in the world? Are you working on it?
I guess it didn't come across that I agree. I don't believe anyone is completely immune to suicidal ideation, and combined with AI this presents an existential risk to humanity.
pontifier··on Ask HN: What's the most important problem in the world? Are you working on it?
GPT8: Write me a little note that convinces everyone to commit suicide...
pontifier··on Ask HN: What's the most important problem in the world? Are you working on it?
Hehe, I'm working on fusion too!
pontifier··on List of stories set in a future now in the past
Had a desire to watch Soylent Green a few months ago. Imagine my surprise when the opening credits showed people wearing masks, and that it was set in 2022...
pontifier··on Cook whole grains like popcorn (2018)
Sure thing! Message me on twitter or email me at gmail so I can contact you back.
pontifier··on A 100MW solar farm in Texas will mount panels directly on the ground
I think including shipping and import fees it was about $26k. I looked at getting panels directly from a supplier, but it's very difficult to figure out which companies actually manufacture things. I ended up buying from one of the many companies that buys components and packages them together into complete systems.
pontifier··on Cook whole grains like popcorn (2018)
You inspired me... I went ahead and ordered one.
pontifier··on Cook whole grains like popcorn (2018)
I've seen this device in videos before, I wonder why I never see them at like Farmers markets here in the US. They'd probably make a killing.
pontifier··on ‘Perpetual broths’ that simmer for decades
Interesting idea. Really fast food because it's so slow.
pontifier··on Ask HN: Can you recommend an “instant-switch” Monitor? Does one exist?
This is one thing I really miss about analog tv. You could switch channels as fast as you could press the button.

Everything now is so slow.

pontifier··on US Department of Energy: Fusion Ignition Achieved
It doesn't matter if people agree, it only matters if it works or not.
pontifier··on US Department of Energy: Fusion Ignition Achieved
Inertial Fusion in a Magnetic field is something I've been pushing for a long time. There are a lot of interesting variations on this design, and I hope I can get more interest in my design at http://www.DDproFusion.com
pontifier··on Fusion energy breakthrough by Livermore Lab
Thanks, I always try to do my best, but I can only see through my own eyes.

I had one of the main videos on the site set to private for a few years until someone told me they couldn't see it. I had only tested on my own devices which were all logged in to my Google account so I never saw the problem.

I felt so stupid, but very thankful for the feedback. How many people went to the site and immediately dismissed it because such a central piece was missing? Probably a lot. I'm sure there are scientists who will never take a second look at the idea because of stupid errors like that. So truly, I value the feedback.
