ponderings··on Venture backed or bootstrapped? There's a third way: just raise one round
Sometimes scaling to the market size even means smaller.
ponderings··on The case for single-stair multifamily
I see these things in movies, sometimes the last part is a ladder?

Why isn't it one big ladder?

ponderings··on Snapdragon X elite is faster than MacBook Air M2
One should use a desktop for the desktop because of ergonomics.
ponderings··on Htmx and Web Components: A Perfect Match
People do that (not me) because you can easily change all elements that have that specific border type. You might change the radius or thickness, could add an outline or at least see what it looks like applied to everything. border-solid wont change but it follows the same approach for consistency.
ponderings··on Examples of AI rip-offs making their way into Google News
The way I imagine it (sometimes spot on, sometimes hilariously wrong) large companies could eventually have really good company representatives that answer phone/email/chat immediately and are deeply familiar with the company and the customer. Many complaints can be converted into polished product/feature proposals and bug reports. Eventually they should be able to have smaller constraints, draw up plans, fill agendas and make decisions within their budget. A bit like algorithms are trusted to trade stocks.

Seems funny, have a bot from acme inc, give it a list of job descriptions, assign a budget. acme then figures out how to extract as much money as possible.

In the end, humanoid robots running the company, doing meetings and interviews all over the world simultaneously.

Walking around the factory, hey Jim, how is the wife? Oh, things are slow today, I'm going to give you the rest of the day off. Not real empathy but simply the most profitable manipulation.

Is that real time? Does it have to be?

people writing konglish or euroenglish etc can also write articles now. For the majority English is the second or 3rd language.
ponderings··on FAQ on Leaving Google
Right, it was google video (that was just a bunch of users and content) that was "merged" into youtube. As usual they didn't bother redirecting the url's. Just let all of those hundreds of millions of links rot. What an opportunity to ruin an unimaginable number of threads and blog posts.

I'm trying to picture a white board with someone drawing up a plan how to destroy everything and take over.

Woah, video replies, we have to remove those. Threaded conversations under videos? Lets make them into an unbearable mess and make it as hard as possible for anyone to have a conversation. We can put it under history! ha-ha good one! Wait, we could suck everyone into a vacuum and have them all watch the same videos? ~ Excellent idea!

Creative company indeed

ponderings··on FAQ on Leaving Google
Something new will have to be made. You wont get credit for that effort, no riches, not even a thank you. Fooling around with the puzzle is the only reward and it should be good enough even if it amounts to nothing.

What is even the real question? How should we do politics?

ponderings··on Ask HN: Who else is working on nothing?
My idea is to work on small toy things I can finish in uhh 30 minutes, a day, a week, 30 years etc Ponder the big problems in life, read up what was done to progress the progress sufficiently to be able to participate in attempting to solve the puzzle. Look where others didn't look. Eventually you find a problem that fits your ability. This could be a small problem that takes 5 years to complete or a big problem that takes 1 day once you know how to do it.

Sometimes you just have to try stuff. Without going into details my 2 most stupid ideas turned out to be completely hilarious and unlike anything one could imagine in advance.

Enjoy the process not the results.

ponderings··on The big alcohol study that didn't happen (2021)
It's more practical than a 100 m feel good study to justify drinking. People are going to drink regardless. If you do, eat well.
ponderings··on The big alcohol study that didn't happen (2021)
I eventually almost forgot about the topic and was just amazed by the effort that went into making this this readable.

Someone told me about a paper long ago. It compared 2 groups of heavy drinkers, one drinking mostly fancy wines with elaborate expensive meals and the other drinking mostly beer while eating out of a deep fryer.

The banquet winos consumed more alcohol per day but had much better health. They also tested both diets on rats with the same result.

I suppose the moral of the study was that nutrition has such a large effect on health that alcohol hardly makes a difference, even in large amounts.

ponderings··on The Internet Is Full of AI Dogshit
I can see it already! The war with China... then we find ourselves around the camp fire with the dads and mums cooking food, the boys and girls singing songs and the grandparents telling stories about times long gone.
ponderings··on OpenAI deletes ban on using ChatGPT for "military and warfare"
yeah, I feel terrible about it. We as a species apparently cant punch a dent in a pack of butter unless it is for greed or murder. We chose to be like that. Seriously, wtf???

I would prefer it if we developed competitive qualities. Trying to stop doesn't make sense, we have to outgrow it.

ponderings··on OpenAI deletes ban on using ChatGPT for "military and warfare"
With enough training anyone can be a belly dancer.
ponderings··on Everyone's getting ghosted, the new normal in tech recruiting
Here is a truly stupid idea: What if you could buy a job interview. You pay say 100 bucks, you get the deluxe tour, all the attention and dedication you deserve, a nice letter highlighting your qualities. Make the process into a real product that is worth buying.

I've never experienced it and I don't know if they still do it but I hear in Belgium they do a lot of things over dinner. If nothing useful comes out of it you split the bill.

ponderings··on Everyone's getting ghosted, the new normal in tech recruiting
I've had strange success walking up to the guy, telling him I want us to deliver fantastic work together, I want to work with you - together. What I don't want is to go to the boss and tell him you've fucked up, you are lazy, that you are doing a poor job and that we would be better off without you. This is the last thing I want. The best outcome is that we get someone else who knows nothing. If that doesn't happen you would blame me. Then I give him a detailed list of things I think they should have done differently.

It costs a few relationship points but they do respect the practicality of it.

ponderings··on Ask HN: What other good forums are out there?
Here is a great idea: make a forum software that uses AI to turn topics into a wiki article that is periodically updated with new information. You could for example provide relevant feeds and examine those for content relevant to the article. Similar topics could share a wiki article.

Identifying and collapsing chatter/noise could also be wonderful. Sometimes people just want to [shall we say] socialize around a topic, it's fun but also making it horrible to read up on a discussion.

People seemingly forgot the self promotional qualities of a forum. If your high quality contributions generate customers [indefinitely] it all of a sudden becomes worth your time. It takes a good mod to deal with self promotion though unproductive posts. Have to ask: Is this worth reading? If it's not it's harmful to the prestige.

ponderings··on 23andMe updates their TOS to force binding arbitration
In NL you don't get your 14 days on remote purchases when it doesn't make sense. You cant purchase a game play it and return it. You cant eat the food. You cant wear the dress etc

If the 14 days do apply you have to inform the customer about it or it turns into 12 months.

ponderings··on Piracy Is Back: Piracy Statistics for 2023
If people would pay for these the economy would grow by 1-2 Trillion! Sadly "4 in 10 US adults say they have no disposable income" and there are about half a million films. Say 1000 are worth watching depending on interests. Works out to about 0 per movie. They could also not watch any. A sensible goal if you ask me, unrealistic of course but we can afford to be ambitious with other peoples money.

They also wanted to read books, listen to music, read scientific publications.. preposterous! Who do these people think they are?

ponderings··on RSS can be used to distribute all sorts of information
Any updates would work, when/who you last fed the dog. The pubdate can be in the future. You can share upcoming events.
ponderings··on Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and others to join Microsoft
i blame human error
ponderings··on How bioelectricity could regrow limbs and organs
Something simple like elongated heads
ponderings··on We have decided to pause driverless operations across all of our fleets
After all cars are driver-less comes tanks, artillery and "suicide" vehicles.

What have drivers done anyway to deserve all this attention? Why try to automate something that involves killing people on-error? It seems any other occupation would be an easier more sensible more realistic target.

ponderings··on EU parliament agreement to remove chat control and safeguard secure encryption
The EU standardizes a lot of laws that a lot of countries should have had already. I'm sure there must be bad examples but I've really only seen improvements in action. Countries have to part with their idiotic version or give up on their idiotic proposals. NL for example had some issues wanting forced labor for unemployed people with social support but that would be called a job and require minimum wage.
ponderings··on I think I kind of hate lazy loading
ah right! I forgot about that. For a single page:

(Firefox) load everything > ctrl+a > right click > view source (have to wait a bit for that to work) > ctrl+a again > copy > paste into text document > save as > example.html

It is a truly insane workflow, as if you are trying to do something weird.

Better to just right click > take screenshot > whole page or use the cli https://firefox-source-docs.mozilla.org/devtools-user/taking...

ponderings··on How many medical studies are faked or flawed?
Isn't this an issue with the reviews rather than the publication attempts? Wouldn't the normal (if there is such a thing) approach between people be to credit a reviewer with the quality of their reviews or lack thereof? Basically, who signed off on it?
ponderings··on Can LLMs Reason and Plan?
> “can you think of a way to fix this script, ChatGPT isn’t managing”

haha, who's the glue coder now!

edit: I chat with a 13 year old glue coder one time. He couldn't really code at all but he could find the components and was excellent at prompting people for help. He showed many things like map api's interacting with many other things. How long did that take you to put together? uhh 2 hours. My mind was blown.

ponderings··on I think I kind of hate lazy loading
Makes me wonder what other great ideas we've implemented.
