polyamid23··on Emacs 31 is around the corner: The changes I'm daily driving
Why not use eww?
polyamid23··on German ruling declares Google liable for false answers in AI Overviews
I don't know about that. Imagine I want to sort people into employable and unemployable based on AI summaries. After filtering the employable pile is large enough. You being in the unemployeable pile and me accepting it blindly, is not my problem. If there is any at all.
polyamid23··on Google just made you a search quality rater. You won't get paid
So if google does not pay me for rating, google is the product?
polyamid23··on DuckDuckGo search saw 28% more visits after Google said people love AI mode
Yes but an AI free version exists to which people apparently switch.
polyamid23··on A detailed introduction to Kakoune for the aspiring power user
This is actually a good resource for starting out with kakoune. Thanks!

polyamid23··on Moving away from Tailwind, and learning to structure my CSS
> inline CSS can't be cached

Can you elaborate what the problem is? What is it you want to cache?

> and it creates a lot of noise when using dev tools for debugging.

I don’t think so. The element styles have an own section (assuming you debug the applied styles)

> It actually increases cognitive load because you have to account for CSS in two different locations.

Same applies to no tailwind. You need to account for the html (is parent block / inline / …) anyway.

polyamid23··on Windows quality update: Progress we've made since March
For 2 months now the „put in admin credentials“ dialog is so fundamentally broken - ui-wise, it is unbelievable (in the sense that I do not believe it actually made it to production even though I see it with my own eyes). There are so many anecdotes about slop by now, the working parts become the anecdotes.

By now Windows, for me is more like a reality TV show than an OS.

polyamid23··on AI singer now occupies eleven spots on iTunes singles chart
Is there a difference in how you treat machines vs how you treat humans?
polyamid23··on I won't download your app. The web version is a-ok
This indeed is annoying. Burn it down. This year is the year of moving away from services pushing this nonsense. I am looking at you PayPal.
polyamid23··on European alternatives to Google, Apple, Dropbox and 120 US apps
Codeberg is a decent option.
polyamid23··on Microsoft: Copilot is for entertainment purposes only
They should tell copilot then! It seems to disagree.

- ‚Are you for entertainment purposes only?‘

-‚Not at all — unless you want me to be. The short version: I’m not “for entertainment only.”‘

Edit: Ok I see it is legal framing to not be held liable, but can they just do that via ToS and let the tool itself promote something else?

polyamid23··on Show HN: Will AI take my job
„Model AI is starting to change parts of this job, but a lot of what Models do still needs a real person…“ … also: „What This Means For You We don't have this exact job in our database — this is our best guess“ :D Nice try?
polyamid23··on Say No to Palantir in Europe
What new EU-Office thingy?
polyamid23··on Do Not Turn Child Protection into Internet Access Control
I wonder if setting my OS age to let’s say 10 would protect me from ads…
polyamid23··on Coding is when we're least productive
„Managers aim to maximise the amount of code their dev teams produce, and so they maximise the time devs spend writing code.„

Never seen that happen. Do not know anyone who experienced this. Where and who are those managers?

polyamid23··on Web development is fun again
I hope you are joking.
polyamid23··on The DuckDuckGo duck changes to Gaquacktus when you search for Galactus
Oh sorry my bad. Now I see what happens. Batman, spiderman, superman, darth vader and donald duck also work (probably even more)! I am impressed.
polyamid23··on The DuckDuckGo duck changes to Gaquacktus when you search for Galactus
For me it is not changed to gaquacktus. Sad.
polyamid23··on Postman which I thought worked locally on my computer, is down
Thanks! I will try it out. Looks awesome. Bruno also supports grpc, though. Also, in what way is Yaak more open source than bruno?
polyamid23··on Ohno Type School: A (2020)
Not too long ago there was a submission of a font-editor[1] and I gave it a shot trying things out, just to realize, that my creations looked off and ugly, not really understanding why. This helps a lot. So much nuance to so many things....

polyamid23··on Germany outfitted half a million balconies with solar panels
For this you do not need to own the property / house / flat, though.

polyamid23··on Show HN: Scorecard.gg – minimalist scoring tool for your favorite board games
In yahtzee you should get the bonus when you have 63 points OR over.
polyamid23··on Tiobe Index for October 2023 – C# is getting closer to Java
Found this in a related article from infoworld:

"Tiobe’s index is based on a formula that assesses language popularity by tallying the number of skilled engineers, courses, and third-party vendors pertinent to each language, based on results in search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo."[1]

polyamid23··on Desktop Linux has a Firefox problem
Is there a consensus on how correct browser market share calculations are? Google does apparently not even know what OS I am using.
polyamid23··on Rethinking Window Management
If you use gnome, I can recommend Pop-Shell

polyamid23··on Young people are flocking to astrology
They do not know about it (those I spoke with), so they are not "comfortable" in discussing it. Especially since it's existence changes the dates of all other signs, their sign is not their sign anymore. I do not push on them too hard though. Just eager to hear their thoughts on it.
polyamid23··on Young people are flocking to astrology
From time to time I mention the 13th "Ophiuchus" star sign to astrology inclined people. It is quite interesting how they react.
polyamid23··on Go with PHP
Might be useful for teenagers / people with no disposable income to start trying web related stuff from a public library.
