polpo··on First Impressions of a $9 CHIP Computer
I'm reminded of Sifteo Cubes, which managed to get SNES-level graphics out of a microcontroller normally used in wireless keyboards.

polpo··on Amazon Echo, home alone with NPR on, got confused and hijacked a thermostat
A friend's Echo set to respond to "Amazon" kept getting triggered when she told her kids to get their pajamas on.
polpo··on AppImage: Linux apps that run anywhere
This is pretty exciting to me. At my job we create a Linux desktop app using NW.js, which basically has Ubuntu 12.04 as a minimum requirement. Unfortunately almost all of our customers use RHEL/CentOS 6.x, which dates from 2010. I've gotten NW.js compiled in CentOS 6.x (and submitted patches to it as well as Chromium, which it is based on), but Chromium is a famously moving target and the latest betas will take even more work to backport. Hopefully this will solve this problem.
polpo··on Just Landed Is Shutting Down
From the article:

While the app was initially used primarily by individuals who made a few airport pickups per year, today Just Landed is increasingly used by professional limousine and taxi drivers, airline professionals, and travel companies.

So they were seeing increasing use by commercial users. Sounds like a ripe opportunity to start charging for such access.

polpo··on Sharp Agrees to $6.2B Bailout from Foxconn, Nikkei Says
The government kind of stepped up: the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan [0], a fund backed by the government, offered ¥300B cash and a ¥200B credit line [1]. Not as much as Foxconn was offering, so I guess that's why they didn't take it.

polpo··on 8088 microprocessor IP core fits in 308 LUTs, runs at 180MHz on a Kintex-7 FPGA

polpo··on I'm going to slowly move on from Mercurial
I don't understand why you need this as a hook. In recent versions of git, "git add" on a directory updates the index to match the entire directory, with modifications, additions, and deletions.
polpo··on Nylas N1 – extensible open-source mail client
Is JMAP [1] support on the roadmap? Once email providers (namely Fastmail, who wrote the spec) start supporting it, of course.

polpo··on IBM is still making ThinkPad keyboards
There's the UltraNav USB Keyboard [1] which is basically a clone of a 2008-era T series keyboard. The trackpad feels a little cramped compared to modern trackpads, and there's no Windows key, but it's still a very nice keyboard. Not wireless, though.

polpo··on Apple’s New San Francisco Fonts
I'm not sure how font hinting would solve this problem. The resolution of the Apple Watch is 326ppi, so the pixel grid doesn't matter so much.

Seems like the different San Francisco variants were designed to solve problems due to the physical dimensions of the letterforms at small sizes, not anything to do with a pixel grid.

polpo··on Launching NginScript
HAProxy can do the SSL termination, reverse proxying, and compression jobs quite well by itself. Though vulcand's etcd-based runtime configuration looks friendlier than HAProxy's.
polpo··on Wikipedia's TLS Cipher stats
Absolutely. DES-CBC3-SHA = people on IE8 on XP = people at work.
polpo··on TvOS for Developers
AFAIK, the "Channels" on the Apple TV gen 2 and 3 are already JavaScript and XML-based (a while ago, people discovered that they could spoof the XML and JS on the Trailers channel to play arbitrary videos). So it's somewhat natural that the new Apple TV continues with Javascript.
polpo··on Diagnosing Memory “Leaks” in Python
Correct, we didn't use /etc/defaults/celeryd, or use a standard init/systemd/upstart/etc-based way of starting celeryd. Instead we used daemontools to add and remove celeryd processes with their own configuration. It took a bit of work, but ultimately let us do code updates with zero downtime.
polpo··on Diagnosing Memory “Leaks” in Python
We solved the Celery + long running + code reloading problem by having each push of new code be associated with a new Celery queue. On push of new code, start the new queue, and SIGTERM the old one, which will wait for any long-running tasks to finish before exiting.
polpo··on Lenovo Caught Installing Adware on New Computers
In the BIOS for most Thinkpads I've used recently there is a setting to swap the Fn and Ctrl keys.
