pokemongoaway··on Eight hours a night isn’t enough, according to a leading sleep scientist
"What I study is important and everyone else should value it more too"
pokemongoaway··on Humans Are Turning Mammals More Nocturnal
Which city is this?
pokemongoaway··on Humans Are Turning Mammals More Nocturnal
How would you create an LED with these properties that is equally efficient as the white light LEDs on the market? Geniunely curious.
pokemongoaway··on Interview with Freeman Dyson
Why such desperation for consensus?
pokemongoaway··on Interview with Freeman Dyson
So much controversy in theories of evolution. All thinkers can benefit from this feeling that "we're over these solved problems." Get to the root of the problems by looking at the various paradigms before one went mainstream and trampled the rest - and stop trying to jump to the same conclusions the mainstream did.
pokemongoaway··on Earliest images of the moon were better than people realised
Same exact experience working in the valley. I also lasted 6 years.
pokemongoaway··on Dell XPS 13 Review from a lifelong Mac user
Karabiner is a great app.
pokemongoaway··on Why Apple doesn’t care about professional Mac users anymore (2016)
Right, it was so hard to use magsafe, keyboards with key-travel, non-touch screen laptops, and all of those annoyingly varied ports on the side! I think OSX and iOS should become the same thing so no one has to manage their own software - let's get everything from their appstore, it's wonderful! I'm also really glad they incentivize smaller hard drive space so more people decide to use their cloud offerings; cloud is the future! Also, anyone who liked the old non-reflective displays just doesn't understand graphics; a company shouldn't listen to all customers, just the correct customers. USB is a great example of where most customers are wrong.
pokemongoaway··on Researchers find IQ scores dropping since the 1970s
IQ isn't the only or best way to judge someone, but what are you even saying? That attempting to measure intelligence is the same as colonialism? Who is being colonized here? Also who are the IQ winners (Asians) accused of colonizing?
pokemongoaway··on Researchers find IQ scores dropping since the 1970s
Correct. Was pretty obvious during my stays in Scandinavia that the people trying to sell me drugs and fighting in the train stations were not locals. Not that those actions in any way would be a correlate of IQ /PC logic.
pokemongoaway··on Researchers find IQ scores dropping since the 1970s
It's men's fault that men aren't putting themselves into female roles that will guarantee for many of them divorce, no reproduction, no attraction from women? Such twisted logic! Why are we saying "men and women IQs" when this is way too general. It's the west that isn't reproducing at replacement rates, and then having lower IQ immigrants replace them. Please note the lack of value judgement on my part about IQ - a society is allowed to increase lower IQ populations, but don't act like it isn't happening.
pokemongoaway··on Habits of Highly Miserable People
It's more like "I don't like when people with mental health problems start identifying themselves with that problem." I don't like it either :)
pokemongoaway··on Habits of Highly Miserable People
The buddhists do that and more. For example, recognizing the components of the body to such a degree that even when you see the most attractive person you may become entirely disgusted.
pokemongoaway··on Habits of Highly Miserable People
How could it kill somebody? And can you link to where the ill are being trolled?
pokemongoaway··on Habits of Highly Miserable People
Similar to the many thousand year old schools of eastern thought!
pokemongoaway··on Habits of Highly Miserable People
"...that it is impossible to ever build their own identity" Sounds like a pretty poorly prescribed incantation.
pokemongoaway··on Habits of Highly Miserable People
It's a value because the more people you've been with the less likely you'll stay with the one you have. However, therapists should be pushing back on the idea that we need to focus on bad things that happened to us in order to be released from them. It is simple enough to see - and one of the reasons why eastern practitioners still laugh at staunch western scientists.
pokemongoaway··on Anthony Bourdain has died
Because it demonstrates a trade-off made for short term that causes long term suffering in others, especially loved ones. Dying does too, but if we make a reasonable effort to not die, then we are making a responsible effort to not hurt those who depend on us - if just due to having know us. It's promoting a generally bad fix, so should be looked down upon. Euthanasia is more benign I think.
pokemongoaway··on How Bacteria Eat Penicillin
"...were grown on black, polycarbonate membranes placed on tryptic soy agar plates..." So ya, definitely not a walk in the park to eliminate the bacteria in the biofilms of grandma's old infection! I never really got the incentive for smart people like you to post sorts of "see, it's solved, we're so advanced" replies online. It makes sense with technology because that is easy to reference and prove one way or another. But implying something is solved in biology is very often problematic, isn't it?
pokemongoaway··on How Bacteria Eat Penicillin
Well they did it with the new generation of painkillers that makes more money and is less efficacious than the old. And they've ruins millions of people's lives with fraudulent research without much recourse - hundreds of books on this topic. First do no harm.
pokemongoaway··on How Bacteria Eat Penicillin
Not to mention low dose antibiotics are sometimes very therapeutic. When the effective medicines become widespread big pharma has incentive to spend as much money marketing against them as it does to actually develop better stuff. Antibiotics never worked against biofilms anyway - and many of the cases of so-called evil bacteria are actually just full fledged biofilms.
pokemongoaway··on Neighbourly by Google
Maybe a class action lawsuit - not for money - but for the promise of open sourcing and leaving some funding for any future projects that have customer support, but that they want to squash without adequate reason.
pokemongoaway··on Delayed Impact of Fair Machine Learning
Wow :(
pokemongoaway··on Delayed Impact of Fair Machine Learning
What exactly is wrong with him saying this: "Race is almost exactly the opposite problem: the signal in the data is so strong that you can't help but pick it up, even after you censor everything you can think of." As far as I can see it is a reasonable thing to say. Why not just come out and say: "I am on ideologically opposed to you and here is a threat of censorship." What is more intellectually curious than the idea that - as much as we want to - we can't remove a variable in many analyses because of its statistical significance?
pokemongoaway··on Unquantified
I tried to infect a quantified self company with the same gist about 7y ago. They did quite well at first, but failed to continue innovating in my point of view. Anyway, whenever my ideas were gaining traction the marketing head would convince the CEO that my ideas would be bad for the company. Now I'll never know :P
pokemongoaway··on Physics Needs Philosophy. Philosophy Needs Physics
It's because scientific materialism can be used like a religion. It is arguably the most powerful religion in history.
pokemongoaway··on Another flaw in Signal desktop app leaks chats in plaintext
Anyone else have an aesthetic feeling for this? Signal desktop felt clunky to such a degree that takes away from trust that Telegram feels equally secure - even though it is not.
pokemongoaway··on Apple faces class action lawsuit over failing MacBook butterfly keyboards
My experience is that people who LOVE touch bars, keyboards with less travel, touch screens instead of keyboards, and iPads instead of laptops - are less human. I'm not saying people with these preferences are not human, but I would just argue that they are less human than someone who fully experiences the humanity of a quality keyboard and mouse. Whereas someone who experiences no reduction in humanity when these pleasures are removed should be questioned! What do you experience as pleasures in your life? Do you enjoy counting grains of sand? Do you experience more discomfort when your super flat keyboard is dirty than when someone replaces your more ergonomic instrument with a less ergonomic one? Someone has to ask the hard questions! ;)
pokemongoaway··on Thermal Paper Polaroid
Are you more upset that the post is factual or that it is allowed to exist?
pokemongoaway··on Why Nora Vasconcellos is the future of skateboarding
Because the narrative is getting easier and easier to control on websites that aren't even mainstream. I'm looking forward to see some workable innovations in this area... Common Silicon Valley! :)
