poisonborz··on Euro execs mull use of US clouds
Like with all EU things, great idea, 10 years too late and half-assedly implemented
poisonborz··on Why Blender Changing to Vulkan Is Groundbreaking [video]
This is a rather bad intro to a great topic, the comments point out a trove of errors and false parallels in the video.
poisonborz··on Cinematography of “Andor”
For one the technology for such a saber far surpasses and stands out from anything else in the Empire. But more importantly it requires the same superhuman Jedi magic to be useful (swinging to bounce blaster shots). It works as a ritual weapon / in climatic battles, but modern SW overuses it (as the Jedis in general).
poisonborz··on Cinematography of “Andor”
Andor is a huge middle finger for everything that came after the original trilogy. It manages to be menacing and showing a convincing rebellion against realistic fascism - relying heavily on the tones of the old films - without any of the dumb Jedi magic, light sabers andd mystic blabble.
poisonborz··on Show HN: AI Peer Reviewer – Multiagent system for scientific manuscript analysis
Do I see this right, you expect people to submit their scientific research papers, and there is zero information on who you are, how to contact you, what happens with the uploaded data / any privacy policy, and so on...

(except your github usernames on the repo posted only here)

Regardless of how useful this is it's hard to take it serious.

poisonborz··on Driverless Semi Trucks Are Here, with Little Regulation and Big Promises
In a mostly driverless industry there will be protocols and standards a human driver will not be able to fulfill. Using humans in these workflows will be a nuisance.
poisonborz··on Mozilla to shut down Pocket and Fakespot
You could try Wallabag. It provides 3 separate RSS feeds per saved link status, that could trigger IFTT.
poisonborz··on Mozilla to shut down Pocket and Fakespot
I think it's really hard to replicate the "people save this article for later" pedigree without actually having this information.
poisonborz··on Mozilla to shut down Pocket and Fakespot
Saving links and offline reading is dime a dozen nowadays, but the one BIG feature was recommended articles, which basically opened the reading list of the world and you could read extremely interesting longform articles based on your list. It was the best magazine you could imagine. But I guess it required maintenance and moderation so they axed it - in the typical fashion of an acquired product I might say.

I still wish for something like this with privacy in mind and community maintained.

poisonborz··on GodAmp: Reimplementation of Winamp 2.9 in Godot, with cross-platform support
Anybody wanting a real Winamp successor should use AIMP. Besides being very mature and full of features it also supports Winamp DSP plugins.
poisonborz··on Ukraine can move beyond its Soviet architectural legacy
Those plattenbau apartments still provide affordable and good housing - often modernised with insulation or solar roofs - for hundreds of millions in postsoviet states for the same demographics that live in cottages, moldy drywall houses or rotting trailer parks in "first world" nations.
poisonborz··on Show HN: Vaev – A browser engine built from scratch (It renders google.com)
That's easy to specify but contains a lot of bloat and unused features. A slimmer but more modern set would be useful.
poisonborz··on Wacom drawing tablets track the name of every application you open (2020)
What would be the alternative? Overcensored app stores and corps insisting on them?

It's more of a question of computer literacy and will be better with time.

poisonborz··on Wacom drawing tablets track the name of every application you open (2020)
Why useless? Permission prompts were the best inventions of mobile OSes, there should be much more of them actually.

On desktop there could be ways added to sidestep them, eg. defined in bulk in a processname.permissions file somewhere protected.

poisonborz··on Wacom drawing tablets track the name of every application you open (2020)
Why? Just disable for all by default and have a permission popup open for each, stating that disabling it may crash that app.
poisonborz··on Grok answers unrelated queries with long paragraphs about "white genocide"
This is what I meant. The comfortable truth would be the other way around.
poisonborz··on Grok answers unrelated queries with long paragraphs about "white genocide"
So it's always a small top branch? Everyone else, the society is just a bunch of ants, following daily needs, sticks and carrots, herded like sheep by the Big Guys, so they can't do much at all?

This is just the narrative They want you to believe, the most comfortable for all. But in reality there can't be wars if there are no soldiers.

poisonborz··on The Future Is Too Expensive – A New Theory on Collapsing Birth Rates
Higher living standards also raise expectations. Young people of today would view the 1930s as barbaric.
poisonborz··on Wise refuses to let us access our $60k AUD
Except you can't do that if your case is not big/interesting, like "they locked my account with $500"
poisonborz··on Why are banks still getting authentication so wrong?
Please do not use Authy, lacks essential features and it was bought by a bad actor.
poisonborz··on Xenon is an open source universal game cheating framework C++
There are many valid/good use cases for this. I often used trainers in single player games when one aspect of a game annoyed me (eg a special resource in an RTS) or I just wanted to breeze through it (an acrobatic FPS where you would also need to avoid bullets/care about health).
poisonborz··on Can you smuggle data in an ID card photo?
Why use the most often scanned and scrutinized item in your inventory? Why not a family photo in your wallet or a fake discount card?
poisonborz··on 22-inch foldable external display
> It is currently under development and is expected to be launched in 2026 or even longer. (sic)
poisonborz··on Switch to a tiling-window-manager TODAY
> It has less LOC than DWM too which is a plus.

Why? Especially as an end user.

poisonborz··on I've largely replaced Google with ChatGPT for looking things up
A truly great >ai< could make assumptions that you can't simply verify with a single quick internet search. It could be a claim that is simply distilled from- and supported by 5 separate 18th century manuscripts that don't contain the answers themselves. With an actual advanced system most of the answers would be like this, thus making explicit labels meaningless.
poisonborz··on I've largely replaced Google with ChatGPT for looking things up
I'd never want to rely on a mechanism that would not source its answers in at least such a complicated way that would make such attributions meaningless. Unless I would state in a blog that the high blue frog king's birthday is on 5th moon of kuibtober, and someone is asking extactly that, which would make it... similarly meaningless, besides maybe a passing sidenote, even if true, since it's a single unverified claim.
poisonborz··on Generative AI is not replacing jobs or hurting wages at all, say economists
Rents, or any living costs going down? But everything is based on "stocks only go up".
poisonborz··on Generative AI is not replacing jobs or hurting wages at all, say economists
...and saves humongous amounts of time in the process. Documentations are rarely a good read (however sad, I like good docs), and we should waste less engineering time reading them.
poisonborz··on Giving Software Away for Free
There are multitude of ways to package a website for a local computer, Electron and ton of more lightweight alternatives. Actually it's the most popular way to make desktop software nowadays.
poisonborz··on Giving Software Away for Free
As an option maybe, but why promote to store software on someone else's computer? That same static site could work locally on a browser as well.
