poisonborz··on OOP: The worst thing that happened to programming
What has this to do with FP vs OOP
poisonborz··on Ubiquiti Flex Mini 2.5G Review Ubiquiti Does a Cheap 5-Port 2.5GbE Switch
Cat6 is a 23 year old standard, and a lot of people just connect to a NAS next room.
poisonborz··on Ubiquiti Flex Mini 2.5G Review Ubiquiti Does a Cheap 5-Port 2.5GbE Switch
With the upcoming Realtek RTL8127 based products I would rather jump to 10G straight. Sadly there isn't much competition in that switch segment, I couldn't find reasonable products besides maybe Mikrotik CRS304-4XG-IN.
poisonborz··on Ask HN: Is building for the web even worth it now?
This happens for decades - Eternal September, email spam, login-only social networks, curated algorithmic feeds - AI is but one late-stage catalysator. I'm actually glad that the change happens faster. Every revolution needs a high pressure tipping point. The internet changed from being a niche platform to an actually global (if not main) scene of society, with all the very human abuse, crime, slave work, authoritarian controls that come with it. I'm excited for what the same forces - that created the early internet - will now make over these emptied fiber veins.
poisonborz··on Perkeep – Personal storage system for life
I think many of us builds the same idea nowadays with many different tools and services. It became the "project car" of tech enthusiasts. But it's complicated and subjective enough that I guess it can not be abstracted down this way. We'd need some common platform, something like Synology was vaguely going for.

> I wanted something small enough to fit into a pants pocket

I always wanted to know what kind of pants people wear who say that to this device size (see also Nintendo DS & co)

poisonborz··on IKEA launches new smart home range with 21 Matter-compatible products
Another take: what does it offer companies? They don't really want interoperability. Google, Apple, Alexa are the gravitational forces, and most mainstream devices already support them. Matter makes device maker's platform/own device portfolio aspirations weaker.
poisonborz··on IKEA launches new smart home range with 21 Matter-compatible products
For the power user, I don't see much that Matter/Thread offers over Zigbee. The "unified command protocol" is not much of a problem with attentive device selection (and for chinese products there is Tuya) and as for Thread, it's not dramatically better. There were debates around this 4+ years ago, and will be 4+ years from now. The standard is out forever, search any marketplace, you will find that Zigbee/Wifi outnumber Matter devices 10:1.

poisonborz··on Why Nextcloud feels slow to use
I agree with the criticism but wonder why are there no alternatives? Nextcloud, for what most people use it, is a rather simple, straightforward collection of apps, yet not even those single apps have alternatives. Eg. show me a good selfhostable web calendar, it doesn't exist.

Why does Nextcloud, or even just parts of it, not have dozens of alternatives?

poisonborz··on Do you know that there is an HTML tables API?
Code quality is not bike shedding.
poisonborz··on A theoretical way to circumvent Android developer verification
Not the developer. This is all additional complexity and less privacy for the user.
poisonborz··on Another European agency shifts off US Tech as digital sovereignty gains steam
I wish, but for a corporation morale grounds are not enough, and the facts speak for the contrary. Even with all the insanity, the US would not touch something as insanely profitable as this, and the government is very protective of the top tech firms. Also on the technical level, EU companies are simply not in the same ballpark.
poisonborz··on Affinity Studio now free
Why is an account necessary then? Stop saying it's free when it's not.
poisonborz··on YouTube is taking down videos on performing nonstandard Windows 11 installs
Correct url is https://usebottles.com/
poisonborz··on Society will accept a death caused by a robotaxi, Waymo co-CEO says
What does this sentence even mean? A regular car crash basically always has someone at fault, a reckless or unattentive driver, a service employee or a manufacturer. What does "death by robotaxi" change by that? That responsibility should dissolve, and people would say "oh it was an Act of the Algorithm, move on, it's still worth it?"
poisonborz··on Google flags Immich sites as dangerous
Congrats on this great choice of business endeavor
poisonborz··on Wabi – Personal Software Platform
I suspect an AI app builder.
poisonborz··on iPad Pro with M5 chip
"Ordinary people" wouldn't care about anything above even an M1 CPU. The post is about the iPad Pro. The target audience would care about having the software features that macOS has.
poisonborz··on Europe's Digital Sovereignty Paradox – "Chat Control" Update
Anybody actually living in EU is absolutely tired of hearing "It is time for Europe to..." It's the standard sentence starter for every "bold proposal" for a decade+. Europe will keep fumbling around. The fragile unity that propelled the sweeping changes of the 90s/00s had fallen apart.
poisonborz··on AI Is Too Big to Fail
It's not AI that is losing trust, it's the US. It was always the US, the "West". They may invent fusion reactors tomorrow, if they can shut access to my assets on a whim, take direct hostile actions against their allies / my home, or I see they are at a brink of a deep societal chasm / civil war, if I see another economy outpacing them in industrial output, I will just not put my money there.
poisonborz··on AMD and Sony's PS6 chipset aims to rethink the current graphics pipeline
The industry, and at large the gaming community is just long past being interested in graphics advancement. AAA games are too complicated and expensive, the whole notion of ever more complex and grandiose experiences doesn't scale. Gamers are fractured along thousands of small niches, even in sense of timeline in terms of 80s, 90s, PS1 era each having a small circle of businesses serving them.

The times of console giants, their fiefdoms and the big game studios is coming to an end.

poisonborz··on Figure 03, our 3rd generation humanoid robot
Yeah so in 2-4 years you can throw out your whole expensive robot because battery wears out? I hate this argument that just to be a bit thinner, the whole device has to be be made throwaway.
poisonborz··on A competitor crippled a $23.5M bootcamp by becoming a Reddit moderator
That sounds bad and unfair... so... the victim is a coding bootcamp. Oh well, anyway, next post.
poisonborz··on Why George R.R. Martin Broke the Cardinal Rule of Hollywood (2024)
He wrote Thrones explicitly to challenge Hollywood clichés and inject real medieval mechanics in an otherwise throbbing overblown drama. He made a bank, got a following, sold the rights, and it's not his fault that after the source material ran out, it turned to be exactly what he hated. But he's rich, lives for his hobbies. I don't think he owes anyone anything.
poisonborz··on How I influence tech company politics as a staff software engineer
I wish there were more articles on this topic. Politics is always something engineers have to suffer because, not a part of life in a way they could actively utilise, even though they are the core business-forming part of the lower ranking workforce.
poisonborz··on Tesla Cybertruck Isn't Allowed in Germany, Not Even the US Army Can Change That

poisonborz··on Immich v2.0.0 – First stable release
But for structuring, tagging, why would you need a database? There's the file system, and countless tools to batch edit images and exif. Immich is great to display images, and perhaps gather some bit of metadata, like face recognition.
poisonborz··on Claude Sonnet 4.5
These reviews are pretty useless to other developers. Models perform vastly differently with each language, task type, framework.
poisonborz··on F-Droid and Google’s developer registration decree
Firefox - you mean Mozilla with its dozens of scandals, money squandering, that is entirely dependent on Google financing (and now endorses its AI tool within the browser). There are some good Chromium and Firefox forks. There is nothing else much left.
