poisonborz··on But how to get to that European cloud?
Which EU country has comparable tuition fees to the US? Do yor kids go to some UK private university?
poisonborz··on Ask HN: How do you have effective 1:1s with your manager?
To any managers here, please avoid and forever forget blank cheque questions like "how are you". Makes the mood instantly superficial.
poisonborz··on The US economy is heading for recession
See how an much weaker russia under much worse conditions is still kinda chugging along.
poisonborz··on Microsoft's Relationship with OpenAI Is Not Looking Good
You could have made similar arguments for VR/AR, yet here we are.
poisonborz··on US Ends Support For Ukrainian F-16s
> same quality of life

What is your bill when an ambulance brings you in? When you have a legal problem at your workplace? What will be your pension? How is the mass transit system? What do you pay for child care, how is your school, how safe is your neighborhood, how do the number of murders in your area compare?

poisonborz··on US Ends Support For Ukrainian F-16s
What does the hardware give you? These datacenters are dependent on US teams, US processes using US maintained software. It's just a bunch of fast deprecating assets, which would need a full reinstall by a team of an AWS-like entity built from ground up.
poisonborz··on Ask HN: Best Windows/Linux developer laptop in 2025
Asus ROG Z13, X13 (not your size, but also X16). You should consider getting used, tremendous value. There are some of the usual gaming laptop quirks (normal usbc chargers cant keep it charged on full load, QA issues like squeaky touchpad) but the versatility is unmatched.

Thinkpads are reliable and great QA/support, but the HW is underwhelming, bad thermals, dim screens, and just too expensive.

poisonborz··on What, if anything, should I do about using Mozilla's Firefox
Chrome forks like Kiwi also have ublock, extensions or desktop view.
poisonborz··on What, if anything, should I do about using Mozilla's Firefox
I have to say Firefox (and forks) for Android is several levels inferior to chrome (forks). Just slower and consumes way more battery - and does not even have the customizability of alternatives.
poisonborz··on Wealthy Americans fuel half of U.S. economy consumer spending
How is this a reason for anything? Feudal lords provided 100% of paid jobs at the time, yet this was not a reason to keep that system.
poisonborz··on Open-source is where dreams go to die
Rather primitive article. TLDR: dev got into an open source project, "received nothing", was fed up with user complaints, and left => open source is fundamentally broken, "most maintainers never see a dime for their efforts"!

Dear author, look up how the OS landscape works, have more realistic expectations, and maybe a better work-life balance.

poisonborz··on Framework's first desktop is a strange–but unique–mini ITX gaming PC
The 400 nits mainly (looked dim in the presentation even), no high refresh rate, 1440p would have been nice. Unrealted but also only Intel options in 2025?
poisonborz··on Framework's first desktop is a strange–but unique–mini ITX gaming PC
I wisth the 12" wouldn't have a garbage screen - although I'm hopeful for more options later on. This format would be equally if not more useful for gaming/business use case, I wonder why they start at the entry level.
poisonborz··on Framework's first desktop is a strange–but unique–mini ITX gaming PC
Only because of Samsung's VR headsets, it was ridiculous and useless otherwise.
poisonborz··on Amazon now discloses you're buying a license to view Kindle eBooks
I never got this. Software is stored, bytes are a physicality, just more easily distributeable. They even have some measurable weight theoretically, with a similar attributed value like an artwork or book - that is subjective and hard to interpret.
poisonborz··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
Much better than a false sense of security. Customers know what they get, and can choose other products instead of being confused or cheated.
poisonborz··on Pi-hole v6
Pihole being a self-hosted service and this being a third party one, I would say the target group is somewhat different.
poisonborz··on Tesla was hit by a wave of protests, sales are crashing, insiders are waking up
I'm tired of people complaining why everything is political. Besides that everything IS political, in this specific example you would decide to give 40k+ dollars and a 6-8 year trust relationship to a guy making nazi salutes.
poisonborz··on Huawei launches $3,660 trifold phone
> only interesting to hardcore tech enthusiasts

I think that the HN crowd is exactly that and I doubt many would want this phone. Foldable phones are just flashy status symbols at this point without much use. I guess the actual target market is affluent people who want to show off, who want to have "something different", and who will not actually use the added screen space.

poisonborz··on Kindle is removing download and transfer option on Feb 26th
Better reading software. KOReader is fantastic (also on Kindle, if you jailbreak).
poisonborz··on Kindle is removing download and transfer option on Feb 26th
I think the value of Kindles lies in Amazon's ecosystem. Hardware-wise I think most competitors catched up. Kobos especially are great, and have a much more open software platform.
poisonborz··on Kindle is removing download and transfer option on Feb 26th
Bad, but anyone sideloading would skip Kindles anyway for a long time now for much better products.
poisonborz··on Ask HN: What country would you like to relocate to and why?
You will get FREE healthcare as in if you need an ambulance ride you won't be charged 10k$
poisonborz··on MapTCHA, the open-source CAPTCHA that improves OpenStreetMap [video]
You mean killer drones

poisonborz··on WASM will replace containers
Surely this will be the year of WASM!
poisonborz··on Building a list of European projects/companies, can you help me to add more?
No longer EU owned though, bought by IBM
poisonborz··on Markdown's Big Brother: Say Hello to AsciiDoc
Unfortunate naming. When most devs think of "ascii" they think "oh that character encoding you shouldn't use anymore"
poisonborz··on AI Is Robbing Jr. Devs
Junior devs can also use LLMs thereby making them better than LLMs.
poisonborz··on Apple iPhone sales dip despite AI rollout
Samsung had this for years and people are generally uninterested. I love the thought to have the _possibility_ of plugging the phone in a USB-C dock and everything works, but honestly, I have done this... like, zero+1 times. For those times I'd need my proper desktop OS, and mobile apps / file handling etc. are just inferior.
poisonborz··on Younger cannabis users have reduced brain function, finds largest study yet
This sounds like the "my granddad smoked like a chimney and lived happily to 92" argument.
