pohl··on How Will the Golden Age of "Making It Worse" End?
Would you mind quoting the passage in the present article where the assumption that capitalism started in the last 20 years or so is made?
pohl··on The invention of a new pasta shape (2021)
The texture differential at the T-intersections was a deliberate choice for the mouth feel component and is one that I appreciate. It gives an inner region of tooth resistance. The frills stay on if you time it right. If I want to cook it in the sauce I pull it out of the water earlier. NBD. I haven’t yet used what Trader Joe’s offers. I suppose it’s possible the two products are not identical.
pohl··on The invention of a new pasta shape (2021)
The series of podcast episodes is worth a listen. The task is not just imagining an ideal shape balancing the 3 constraints, but to do one that will actually come out a pasta extruder die. Getting the trough inside the curl might not work within that implicit 4th constraint.
pohl··on The invention of a new pasta shape (2021)
He did a great job balancing the 3 constraints. I always keep some on hand these days. Trader Joe’s carries it.
pohl··on The quest to decode the Mandelbrot set
I suppose the dimension is the something, to be charitable.

pohl··on How Euler Did It, by Ed Sandifer
My favorite thing from Euler's body of work is the circle-of-fifths on steroids, the tonnetz.

pohl··on How Euler Did It, by Ed Sandifer
That's the least charitable interpretation, I think. A more charitable read is that no system should be one-size-fits-all, so move outliers to specialized subsystems.
pohl··on New theory suggests LLMs can understand text
I don't think you want to use the term "arbitrary" here, since that would imply a stronger claim: that no matter how one defines "understanding" it applies. "Yes, for some specific, narrow definition of 'understanding'" is better.

I understood what you meant, but my math reflexes had to say something.

pohl··on Tell HN: Russia has started blocking OpenVPN/WireGuard connections
That's kind of what being bathed in a constant firehose of disinformation does to public opinion, though, right? Most of those people aren't even living on earth one.
pohl··on Apple Ramps Up R&D Intensity to Pre-iPhone Levels
TFA: "...R&D spending as a percentage of sales, to levels last seen before the iPhone launch..."
pohl··on The Mark Knopfler Guitar Collection
Can’t get no fancy notes on this blue guitar

pohl··on Some memories of Niklaus Wirth
That follows from Clojure being dynamically typed, though. Different design constraints lead to different results.
pohl··on Z – Jump around
The README is an order of magnitude more useful. The man page aesthetic of z's README hits me in the feels, but I prefer the better documentation of zoxide.
pohl··on A Theory of Grift
The Clinton body count thing is just a conspiracy theory. It’s proto Qanon nonsense.
pohl··on Some memories of Niklaus Wirth
Interoperating with Java was a requirement. That immediately takes simplicity off the table if the goal is to bring FP to the JVM.
pohl··on A Theory of Grift
That was my first suspicion, but it seems ahistorical and the quoted passage doesn’t speak to that question.
pohl··on A Theory of Grift
Help me understand the intended relevance of that passage.
pohl··on A Theory of Grift
> Presidents are grifters

This really doesn't need to be expressed in plural. We have one notable example of someone who entered the race as a grift and was arguably surprised to have won. We've had plenty of candidates in it for the grift before, but only one such victor. Maybe it was only a matter of time, though.

pohl··on A Theory of Grift
I read it — possibly misread it — as an instinctive reflex to balance out the negative assessment of Trump so as not to completely lose half the audience.
pohl··on The M2 is more advanced than it seemed
> x86 has to scale from embedded boards to laptops to servers

Isn’t this also true of ARM?

pohl··on Ask HN: Do we have a protocol for interplanetary internet?
You’re welcome. I get the impression that it’s more a matter of Vint Cerf being behind it and Google just letting his curiosity drive him wherever. He started it with a team of scientists at JPL, I think. Google’s ROI is probably the prestige of having their brand next to whatever Vint does.

pohl··on Apple hiring compiler developers for improving Swift / C++ interoperability
That "if" is doing a lot of heavy lifting, when a company like Google is in context. They are an efficient pipeline for sending cool technologies to the graveyard if there ever was one.
pohl··on Perception: A back-port of Observable
I love seeing backporting efforts like this.

> But by some accounts, less than 50% of devices are on iOS 17

What are the current numbers? My reflex has been to check Mixpanel, but I don't know what a good source is these days. They have it at around 64% at the moment.

pohl··on Apple Vision Pro available in the U.S. on February 2
I'd say it's zero percent insane — that is: one hundred percent sane. This first iteration of the headset is going to have a very short battery life. You do not want to run your IDE right on the headset. Video streaming is probably the lower energy draw of those two possible approaches.
pohl··on Go: What we got right, what we got wrong
I don’t recall anything but a single definition of the term until Google muddied the waters.
pohl··on Taligent's Guide to Designing Programs [pdf] (1994)
This is accurate. NeXT was sitting right there but Taligent, Pink, and Cairo sucked all the oxygen. It’s kind of funny how NeXT won in the long run by acquiring Apple for a negative 430 million and re-skinning as macOS.
pohl··on Fidelity marks down X valuation by 71.5%
Wait, do companies buy ad placement in Teslas? Do they appear on the dashboard display while driving or something? If not, then how would they boycott?
pohl··on Hyperloop One to shut down
A few years ago we had an opportunity to borrow at a negative interest rate. Should have leaned into that opportunity.

Also we’re under-taxing bajillionaires and politically-active but tax-exempt megachurches.

pohl··on Doom is 30, and so is Windows NT. How far we haven't come
“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

— Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Also, Windows insists on being backward compatible.

It is therefore doomed to mediocrity.
