pogorniy··on Ask HN: Why is today's Internet experience so user hostile?
1. Maximization of profits.

2. Attempts to regulate and attempts comply with regulations.

The rest are just forms of these phenomena.

How did python2 python3 (in)compatibility work for you?
pogorniy··on Ask HN: Why is machine learning easier to learn than basic social skills?
Because we all are different. Your brain is wired in ways which makes some things easier and some things harder. Look at those who feel bored working with things you feel exited about. Find yourself (in another words whats suits your brain more) and don't try to be who you can't become.

> any advice on acquiring these basic social skills?

Find peoples with similar given and ask what worked for them. Advises from "natural" extroverts won't work for you.

> I think we're not understanding each other here. Let me rephrase this.

That's much better. Because to understand what you meant by example one needed to know reasoning behind the example.

> Science and technology shouldn't have a political valence

It should not. I agree.

Do you agree that atomic bomb is political? At which sate atomic bomb development stops being science and starts being political? At theory level? Experiments? First device? First use of device?

At some stage we start observing that cryptocurrencies impact start having great consequences regardless of the science behind them. Great volume of electricity, centralization of power at hands of middlemen, promises of great future where benefits are reaped by early adopters already today.

Some people feel like looking at cryptocurrencies and blockchain purely from technology perspective, advocating for them, brings more harm than good. And I can understand this position of the author well.

pogorniy··on I am often asked if I will “return to cryptocurrency”
Your comment is about as silly as the Soviet Union banning the study of genetics as a "bourgeois pseudoscience", dismissing it as "anti-Marxist".

If that can't convince you, I can't imagine how you imagine your argument work.

pogorniy··on It's time for a data-first front end revolution
> Application state is a trivial problem to solve.

This is very interesting. Can you show example which you believe trivially solves state?

pogorniy··on It's time for a data-first front end revolution
> one that really tackles the data layer well

I believe this should be rxjs. It's composable: have a stream or streams create new derived streams easily. It's lazy: you can describe what to do with data before it's available. Handling state for the multi step or async operations (loading state, cancelling requests, retrying operations) is a breeze. "Wire" your application with rxjs and you'll never have trouble modelling state with it. Typescript-friendly. It allows be both sync access to the value (BehaviourSubject) and async (Observable). I work with it closely last year and there was no situation I could not model with rxjs.

But people will stick to whatever is hyped by well-known-internet-company. Marketing wins, not quality.

pogorniy··on Apple's Cooperation with Authoritarian Governments
> Once you do business in a country, you follow the country's rules. > Unless of course the country is a banana republic,

Smelly-smelly. Don't pretend you're holding to a value of "rule of the law". You're holding to the rule of the strongest.

pogorniy··on Ask HN: Why do companies ask employees to set goals?
It's a tool to get more ROI per employee. Employees compete for promotion or bonus with their peers to appear better performer within given framework. And produce extra value for the shareholders. And this framework turns into a game which experienced people can play to get more benefits.
pogorniy··on Evolutionary biologist slays the beast of Individualism
How come that our policies and practices contradict the idea that people care about each other?

I see a lot of compassion and action on individual level. But at society we leave more people behind. And as people who are capable to act (those who have enough both mental, time and other resources) tolerate such way of things maybe it's aligned with their system of values (i.e. capitalism and individualism).

pogorniy··on Evolutionary biologist slays the beast of Individualism
Maybe author refers this aspect:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Objectivism

> Rand described Objectivism as "the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute".

Cooperation seems to be means to achieve personal goals. Which brings us to the thesis of the article.

Why would objectivist care about climate change which will have effect in 100 years, but requires them to sacrifice something today?

pogorniy··on Tim Berners-Lee wants to put people in control of their personal data
> The whole point of Tim's "pods", is that just like the WWW, they aren't going to be just another private, centralized platform.

Difference is that pods operate on top of open protocols for storing and accessing data. This means that you can stop hosting your pod and move data to another hoster of pods.

pogorniy··on Semantic Clojure Formatting
When you write list, you can't know which of the structures are control and which are not (and why would you in the first place?). Because macroses can give any semantics, including control one, to the provided list. You think of the structures as lists, and care about narrative "all children of the list are at the same indentation level". That's where I find this "semantic formatting" a useful thing.
pogorniy··on What's new in Svelte (Dec 2020)
To my opinion it's a combination of conditions

1. Open standards. There is no one entity to control what frameworks are "standard". Need for back compatibility of the web standards make them too simple and minimalistic. So you inevitably have a demand for power tools.

2. Many players are trying to capture demand for power tools. Of course their reasoning and approach differ. Often it becomes less about technology, but more about audience perception of the tool. Then we see more blogposts, podcasts, meetings, "see how easy to create and app" posts.

3. Web frontend is hard environment to model UX because too many moving parts. You have inherentedly stateful programm which should communicate asynchronously with at least 2 inputs-outputs: web server and user. Not speaking that it's not enough to have framework with proper building blocks to model your UX, you have bunch of issues with dependencies, debugging and integrations with existing tools.

This makes hard to come up with a solution which can satisfy many people. Some people are infiltrated with ideas which are incompatible with particular framework ideology, and bam, you have 2 camps which "push" against each other.

Now you have demand for tools, but tools shitty in some ways, and it's shitiness is covered with hype, brands and other forms of forming opinion.

This creates a demand for a new thing after people get disillusioned via own experience. And we get yet another framework. Repeat every 4-5 years.

They are very easy to change because people are hude conformists. See how our behaviour changed in recent timed due to corona. Or example of nazi germany.

Problem is that those who benefit from social structure does not want the change, and are working on keeping status quo.

pogorniy··on Ask HN: Essential life skills to function as a human being?
Manage resources (time, money, mood). Keep self healthy enough. Plan. Set goals and work towards those (not necessary to my opinion, but good to have). Process data (search, synthesize, categorize, derive knowledge). Learn (understanding what is required to learn and how to approach learning, be open to learn from new situations). Understand self (where are own thoughts, what is own values, what is external to you). Communicate and cooperate with others. Reading, counting.

---

The rest can be derived.
