poetaster··on Smartphone makers don't bother to comply with EU repairability requirements
In Germany both Shift and Gigaset have had user replaceable batteries for over a decade. The rebrands like Volla and rePhone, obviously. The Finish Jolla has a new phone with battery, camera lenses, etc. Typing on a GS5 with Sailfish. Repair of display was easy to perform.
poetaster··on We have a year to fix security everywhere
The exact 2 points I was itching to make. The political dice rolled some time ago ...
poetaster··on Autistici/Inventati's main .org domain goes dark after US terrorism designation
Is it just dark on the NA side if the pond? I still see it just fine...
poetaster··on Unlocking a locked/deactivated e-waste Cricut Maker
Nice write-up! I was also a Suzuki fan (1980s) and always liked the stylized S logo. Now to go find a vinyl cutter.....
poetaster··on Finger: the 1971 social network that never died
Bravo!
poetaster··on Self hosted email continues to steeply decline
Ditto. It is practical and I am stubborn. Though I no longer run sendmail :-)
poetaster··on Born Against, or why hobby programming communities are against LLM usage
I'll agree as a 90% typist dev. There is a certain class of problems I've sovled for a dozen times. And as often forgotten. Mostly parsing. Recently, I had a local qwen just build data (from html) because I wanted to concentrate on the code that ingests it. Win win. In the end, I thought the python it used a bit verbose so I might return to it to flex some awk muscles, but in the moment, I could focus on the code I wanted to write.
poetaster··on Born Against, or why hobby programming communities are against LLM usage
Well, sometimes it's not a choice you have. I am arguably still a hobby programmer, but was forced by circumstance to go pro. I could not earn enough in graphic design to fix my teeth. Still managed to retain my love for the underlying mathematical (lambda calculs) and do to this day. I was always an enthusiast even as a manager. Now I do volunteer FOSS maint on numerous projects. Some embedded, most Linux phone adjacent. A circle.
poetaster··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
I'm running SailfishOs on Gigasets assembled in Germany and they have G5. It's a port and I don't have android support at all. I maintain a number if apps and it feels like ownership. Also have a spare Jolla with droid stuff, but use that max once a week.
poetaster··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
The safety contacts issue is legislated in Europe. Removing them is breaking the law, I believe. Can be done if you really want to hack.
poetaster··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
Bluetooth support is for Jolla's android support. 5.2 for ports and waydroid is awayz out. My guess,18 months.
poetaster··on Germany Records Historic 12B KWh Solar Feed-In in July 2026
The Deutsche Wetter dienst is just as 50/50 as any meteorological service. May/June were atypically warm, but rainfall sufficient in the north east. July has been mixed extremes from Saxony to the Baltic with sufficient rain that we have not had to water the Garden. 320km north, Grandmother territory, same. The droughts of previous years were much more destructive. We'll see when the crops come in.
poetaster··on Is AI reasoning right for the wrong reasons?
If by 101 you mean the decades long debate between Dennet and everyone else, I think you'll find the 101 gloss throws up more questions than answers. Presuming that language is necessary for consciousness is not a settled question, for instance. As you complain, it is a more complicated field of study than cs, philosophy, biology and chemistry combined.
poetaster··on Is AI reasoning right for the wrong reasons?
I'll go so far as to propose that many brains, dog or cat, certainly display 'signs' of consciousness. They are nothing like LLMs either. Confusing some stream of language with consciousness is missing the a priori.
poetaster··on How real are real numbers? (2004)
Thanks! That was a nice read.

poetaster··on AI in mathematics is forcing big questions
Well, there is something remarkable in human intelligence. We have yet to find anything like it in the known universe. As for the rest, the wise mathematicians are leaning, sorry, hard to lean. TT and co.
poetaster··on WordStar: A Writer's Word Processor (1996)
I fondly remember writing, mostly poetry, with wordstar on my first portable, the kaypro. I still have all the files. I believe it was CPM under the hood...
poetaster··on Jolla Phone (October 2026)
2FA is not an issue. Many, but not all banking apps work fine. I have an android phone for 3 apps which I need about once a month. Daily driving a linux phone since 2016.
poetaster··on Jolla Phone (October 2026)
I'm also a bit dissapointed by that, but the community sponsored me a phone and I've been testing usb dongles. They're actually surprisingly good for no money. I think if I was a daily phones user I would probably be using bt.
poetaster··on Jolla Phone (October 2026)
I still have my first Jolla from 2016. Still works and got updates till 2 years ago. The android stuff I used was minimal but worked fine except for bluetooth and nfc. I build my own mostly.
poetaster··on Jolla Phone (October 2026)
Mal, from Jolla has ports to from the 2 till the 5, I believe. I used an FP2 for about a year. Big difference is andoid app support, not present on the fp ohones.
poetaster··on Digital Sovereignty Becomes an Imperative as the US Reads Dutch Emails
A museum country like Germany manages to have a larger automitive manufacturer than Ford.
poetaster··on Vinyl succumbs to Loudness War: more than just collateral damage (2025)
Exactly! Jeffrey Martin https://jeffreymartinportland.bandcamp.com/album/alive-july-... double LP on vinyl is a pleasure.
poetaster··on Easyduino: Open Source PCB Devboards for KiCad
Strongly agree. I have a number of projects (RP2040/RP2350) where I stick to using the piggy back mcu because it's actually cheaper than doing the whole design with small quantities (<50). Not to mention, much less complex.
poetaster··on Easyduino: Open Source PCB Devboards for KiCad
I do workshops with kids occasionally. Last week, 4 13 year old boys. In this case I did breadboarding with them first and then showed them the transfer to fritzing -> breadboard -> schematic -> pcb. https://fritzing.org/ If you're looking for stuff they might find fun, logic noize (for instance https://hackaday.com/2015/03/09/logic-noise-sawing-away-with... ) has a bunch of fun cmos audio tutorials with great videos. Personally, I build audio toys, both analog and digital (mostly pi pico2) and still mostly use fritzing for the breadboard education element, but kicad if I need smd positioning and the like.
poetaster··on Jolla Phone Pre-Order
Yipee! Ok, I can't afford more hardware, but it's my favourite mobile os and I develop/maintain apps for it, so I'm happy to see the amount of effort Jolla has put in in the last 2 years to stay relevant and up their game!
poetaster··on SailfishOS: A Linux-based European alternative to dominant mobile OSes
Exactly! SDL2 apps run well on SFOS :)
poetaster··on SailfishOS: A Linux-based European alternative to dominant mobile OSes
Not true. Gradual but slow progress. https://github.com/sailfishos

They also recently split the automobile UI part off from the Phone bits. That joint work was part of the problem for FOSSing everything, since they have deals with Car manufacturers which depend on their IP.

poetaster··on SailfishOS: A Linux-based European alternative to dominant mobile OSes
The main distinguishing feature is that you generally lack a keyboar / mouse /pointer thing. Hence, the window manager and interaction in general are tuned for touch interactions, single handed use and the like.

It's for this reason I like SFOS. I've tried android and ios. But they suck.

As a developer, I also appreciate the flexibility even within the limits. Gradle and co. suck.
