pndy··on A Necessary History of the Oddest Letter: W
My friend from Czechia struggled while pronouncing Polish words including /w/ sound represented by "ł" letter.

What I find interesting is that /w/ sound

> V západoslovanských jazycích navazuje na praslovanskou nonpalatální souhlásku [ɫ]

which is still partially present in the eastern regions of Poland and is associated with sort of "sophisticated" pronunciation used by early 20th century actors - and thus it's also known as "performative ł" or "kresowe ł", or "dark l" in English. It is similar to Arabic "l" present in Allah word.

pndy··on Dropbox's Jan 1st 2027 terms of service
Some accounts have a clearly more privileged status here and are allowed to upload content without limits - especially from big outlets.
pndy··on Dropbox's Jan 1st 2027 terms of service
There's at least 10 other accounts who do the same
pndy··on I don't like passkeys
You're not the first commenting on this and I wonder what's the trigger because I haven't seen a single suggestion for setting up a passkey anywhere.
pndy··on Apple Reference Image: A New Approach for Verified Photography
> This is a low friction way to attest "this image came from an iPhone sensor and Apple approved it".

Which surely will be useful in ID verification on the Internet; Android devices most likely will follow with same or similar solution

pndy··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
Anyone got saving files from the web on the phone replaced with iCloud Drive?

Overall it took over 1h20m or so for download and install this version in my iPhone. And Settings still displays indexing notification while I have little on the device, and I have disabled searches for every app. So I wonder what it does optimizing and indexing then?

pndy··on What algorithm did Windows XP use to choose your initial user picture?
Of course that's a matter of taste but Luna interface/theme made whole XP being more appealing to ordinary people - especially with these task-oriented elements. On the other hand, "classic" widgets had that strong bare-bone technical and functional look that made whole system scarier to some degree.

I had tons of "Visual Styles" back then and in the last XP days I opted for grayish Royal or Royale. It's such shame that MS has abandoned Watercolor theme - that was a middle ground: interface was updated and yet, still similar to classic design. And it was even in some elements flat before that style become a dominant. Luckily we're slowly moving away from that and I won't be missing it.

pndy··on There's a new "Google Jail" for independent wikis
There were memes ridiculing Wales and all that annual effort regarding supporting Wikipedia - probably that did the job
pndy··on There's a new "Google Jail" for independent wikis
> Memory Alpha seems to be better run.

Some few months ago I couldn't find actors credits for particular roles they had in Star Trek franchise. For whatever reasons these bits were removed but still were present within Wayback Machine.

Then again, in the past I've seen hostile take-overs of fan made wikis into wikia/fandom "infrastructure". In one case wiki was copied, in time articles were slightly edited and new content was added containing... unsolicited fan theories.

The other case: wiki was copied 1:1 due to some inside disagreements, then incorporated into fandom and in approx. 2 years abandoned. The original died as well but someone managed to restore it from Wayback - this time in read-only mode

pndy··on Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns
We are sadly already beyond the point where sites are locked behind accounts. Today, I'm more concerned about fact that "local" registration is often bundled by SSO from big corporations because it's so supesconvenient.

The future on the eve of age/identity verification doesn't look bright at all. And in years to come, 10 or so, we'll be most likely seeing this corporate-provided SSO as the only way to access sites. They got us trapped already anyway so it's a matter for pushing with law and good marketing.

pndy··on Paint.net 5.2 alpha now runs on Linux
Pinta is based on an old Paint.net code
pndy··on Kumander Linux – A Linux Distro with a Windows 7 Desktop
There was also Lycoris Desktop/LX https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=lycoris

Heavily XP inspired and it even came with similar task-oriented interface "hacks"

pndy··on Europe's last regular standard-gauge steam passenger service
Hah, literally named Sydney Monorail - thanks
pndy··on Europe's last regular standard-gauge steam passenger service
By the way, wasn't there a monorail in Sydney that was dismantled in recent years? I remember watching some show where this train was running in the background
pndy··on Verschlimmbesserung: The Word Your Software Updates Need
It's present in both Polish and Czech as well but rarely used
pndy··on Verschlimmbesserung: The Word Your Software Updates Need
It's close enough and has been already in use. A regression of features quality - for example.

There's no reason to coin a new term at all, nor chasing this idea of using long German word as a replacement.

pndy··on Verschlimmbesserung: The Word Your Software Updates Need
I'm darn sure that in time the original German pronounciation would be lost and you'd hear something comparable to reading Straße as "Strabe".

Probably it would become "verskimbeserong".

pndy··on Kumander Linux – A Linux Distro with a Windows 7 Desktop
Yes "cheesy" and "dated" because new Windows version was about to be released in 3 months from publication of that article. So marketing machine portraying everything old as bad and everything new as better was running full speed.

In the end we all know how "well" W8 was received due to Metro components. Slightly modified Aero theme was still there, all resource files like icons, graphics were largely carried in. Aesthetically and visually that version of Windows was like 5-year old would made a papier mache operating system of two different products.

pndy··on Zuckerberg encouraged growth over child safety, ex-Meta executive testifies
Shocked, horrified and apparently binge-watching the trial because it's a "blockbuster": https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49355825

This is economist.com but I've seen local news outlet going with similar headline, portraying the trial as a "must-see" show.

pndy··on How does IKEA come up with names for its products?
Oh mio Dio :x
pndy··on How does IKEA come up with names for its products?
You may say that "There's too much confusion", ha!
pndy··on How does IKEA come up with names for its products?
The fact that Sz in Hungarian reads as s and other way around, S becomes sh - is mind-boggling especially for Poles, where Sz is pronounced as sh. and S remains s.
pndy··on How does IKEA come up with names for its products?
Ikea mobile application has little speaker near the product name that invokes pronunciation - sadly, that's not available on desktop site. I still tend to read Swedish accented letters in these names as German umlauts.

So that wouldn't be a problem if Polish names would be provided with audio examples.

By the way, the communistic period here was full of products using regular words, name of places or people’s names. We had Wisła, Bieszczady wall units. First Polish color TV was Jowisz (Jupiter); first TV ever my mother had was called Szafir (Saphire). Then Szarotka (elderweis) or Sylwia radios from 50s and 60s respectively. A clone of IBM PC with Intel 8086 (or with Russian clone) from 1986 was called Mazovia - Mazowsze which is a historical region of Poland, same name was also used for DOS encoding for that machine.

pndy··on My Ten Years in No Man's Sky
Just a side note if someone decides to watch that The Engoodening "docu-meme": the channel author reads a very "rich" fanfic involving Sean at the end of the video - you've been warned lol

As for NMS itself, it all comes if you dig survival and building type of games, and you'd to step into Star Trek-style away missions.

pndy··on How do I permanently disable random Google Photos popup to backup photos? (2024)
This should be deemed as illegal - this isn't a consent choice but coercion resulting from the tiredness of being constantly harassed
pndy··on GIMP Development Update
This wasn't even a serious project but an example of malicious virtue signaling with a long-term plan for sort of hostile takeover. People involved just took the original code and replaced every GIMP occurrence with Glimpse, added new logo/icon and called job done. Then went to the news sites trying to raise awareness of the supposed name controversy hoping noise will discredit GIMP while they'll portrait themselves as the saviors. Because who'd want to contribute to a software that has such bad reputation.

It's been over 24 years for me since I've used GIMP for the first time and the only problem that I had was always with GUI ergonomics. You had to understand everything anew after being more accustomed to proprietary software pieces. My friend never adapted to anything else but Photoshop - even Krita is beyond her abilities.

Nearly every discussion regarding GIMP on hn will include thread about the name 'problem' and this is getting tiresome. The name won't change and those who feel offended should focus on problems whose solution is genuinely productive.

pndy··on Ask HN: New Reddit also requiring login?
It reminds me of a Polish reddit spinoff attempt called strims, where subs were streams - hence the localised name.
pndy··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
The Orange Telefon app? So far it's good but I had some reverse situation where my outgoing call to bank call center was marked as "unwanted".

I wonder why Orange so far doesn't support built-in iOS SMS/Call Reporting feature with that app
