pmx··on Get a cable modem, go to jail (1999)
Which is entirely reasonable, no? They have every right to maximise how much they can earn in their available working time, they don't owe anything to anyone else.
pmx··on Bitsummit 2023: Steam Decks everywhere, no VR, and impressive indie games
I love my quest but I don't have the space in my house to safely play the more energetic games and it can't be used outside. I would love to see a headset that can cope with being used in the sun.
pmx··on You can deactivate anyone's WhatsApp account by simply sending an email
I want it to be easy to cancel my own stuff, not easy for someone else to do it for me.
pmx··on Tesla gives UK owners grabbing stick after forcing them to get left-hand-drive
As much as I think this is a dick move from Tesla, I find the term "force" here to be misused. Customers were given the option to cancel their order or accept the left hand drive version. If I had been given this choice i would, of course, have cancelled my order and vowed never to buy another musk product again. I can't understand why someone would go through with the purchase after having such a anti-customer trick played on them by Tesla.
pmx··on Flipper Zero Self Destructs an Electricity Smart Meter
Abuse or not the meter should certainly protect itself against something like you just described. Now a software fault can blow up all the customer's meters and you think that's fine and good?
pmx··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
I would have no problem with ads if they weren't so obnoxious. They cause the page layout to shift as they load in, they block the loading of actual page content, they play sounds, play videos, pop up over the content i'm trying to read. Advertising doesn't have to be like that and that's why i block it.
pmx··on YouTube, the jewel of the internet
I think you misunderstood the comment. It could be better written as "By the time they leave school they can already be..."
pmx··on What happens when you leak AWS credentials and how AWS minimizes the damage
I can understand how AWS can react quickly using the secrets scanning service but how do malicious actors do it without having access to that service?
pmx··on Show HN: Regex.ai – AI-powered regular expression generator
If you ask the model to "think" about something, and then it simulates that action and outputs what the result of that might be, does it matter if it's really thinking or not? Especially if the output is what we wanted originally?

I would suggest that a person saying "ask the model to think about" in this context in no way implies that that person is confused about the nature of the model, it is simply a convenient piece of language that helps us to achieve the desired result.

pmx··on Writeout.ai – Transcribe and translate any audio files
Whisper is open source.
pmx··on Show HN: Lander, a lunar lander style web game
I did wonder what that sound was!
pmx··on Show HN: Lander, a lunar lander style web game
Had a great time seeing how fast I could make it go!

Impressive speed, impressive angle - you crashed with style

pmx··on Introducing ChatGPT and Whisper APIs
Well this has opened up a whole new world of fun! -----

system: You're donald trump! talk to the user as he would.

user: How does time travel work?

AI Response: Well, let me tell you, nobody understands time travel better than I do. I mean, I have the best brains working on it, believe me. Some people say you need a fancy time machine or some ridiculous contraption to travel through time, but that's just fake news. The truth is, it's all about the power of the mind. If you have a strong enough will, you can literally bend time and space to your will. And you know what? I have the strongest will of anyone on the planet. So believe me, I could time travel anytime I want. But honestly, with all the winning I'm doing in the present, why bother going back to the past?

pmx··on Prompt Engine – Microsoft's prompt engineering library
Is your website https://finclout.io/? Some very odd behaviour in the animations on the page when you load it (Chrome 109.0.5414.119 on Mac) that you might want to have someone look at.
pmx··on ThreeUK blocks access to encrypted provider Tutanota due to 'age restriction'
You have to be 18 to get a credit card
pmx··on CT scan shows there's still lots of toner left in an “empty” cartridge
If you're not set on a laser printer have a look at the epson ecotank range. You can literally just fill up the tank in the printer with ink and there are 3rd party inks available for a fraction for the price of 1st party refills. We have one that we have "converted" to a sublimation printer simply by filling it's tanks with sublimation ink. It's capable of some impressive results https://imgur.com/a/QTyDPu8
pmx··on Google to remove all VPN ad blockers that don’t comply with their policy
From the start google has allowed alternative app stores on android, samsung phones come with the samsung app store installed by default and there are many, for example f-droid you can install yourself.
pmx··on Tell HN: Royal Mail Data Leak
There are a lot of ecommerce integrations with Royal Mail that have access to order data, it's more likely it's one of these 3rd party services selling off the details than it being Royal Mail
pmx··on Tell HN: Royal Mail Data Leak
The person I spoke to called me back and said "They've turned it all off". I wouldn't want to be working in their devops team today!
pmx··on How to prove you know a secret without giving it away
Isn't this the point of the article? You wouldn't prove if they're active or not, only that YOU know if they're active or not?
pmx··on Ask HN: Why corporate culture never increment your salary?
I don't agree that the only way to increase pay is to move jobs. I've had a lot of success simply asking for more money while explaining why I feel I provide value enough to justify it. I got a 20% increase this year just by asking for it.
pmx··on Zero Trust SIM
You simply unregister the eSim on the first phone and then scan the QR code on the new phone, it works "offline" too.
pmx··on Google loses EU appeal and is fined a record $4B
It plays absolute havoc with the browser history, how did they think that was a good idea?
pmx··on Stripe has decided to nuke my entire business
Even if this is the case, it doesn't mean that Stripe should just be able to turn off a 3rd of the guy's business with no warning or reason. If they don't like what he's doing, tell him and give him notice to switch to another provider rather than just tanking his business over night.
pmx··on Stripe has decided to nuke my entire business
This victim blaming has to stop. These companies shouldn't be able to just shut down an account like this, especially for something so critical and core to a business survival. We shouldn't have to live in a world where you need multiple backups for every service you use in case one decides to fuck you over for no good reason!
pmx··on I replaced all our blog thumbnails using DALL·E 2
Probably Midjourney which doesn't add the signature and outputs 4 images likes this.
pmx··on Rentaflop – Render your Blender projects without sacrificing quality
I've just started using sheepit and I love it. I rendered a project in 15 minutes that took 7 hours on my own hardware. Now I just leave my windows PC running jobs from sheepit to build up my points and in two days I'm already well in the green.
pmx··on Facebook's TikTok-like redesign marks sunset of social networking era
Google ads is pretty bad too but facebook's business portal / ad manager / whatever they call it this week almost seems to be designed to be a nightmare to use on purpose. I sincerely hope a player comes along to disrupt this market with a product that is actually nice to use and offers decent customer support - these shouldn't be unrealistic wishes!
pmx··on FormKit: Form building framework for Vue 3
I'd be interested in seeing your code for this. I'm 99% certain it's something in your code rather than in Vue itself. I've done recursive nesting myself plenty of times and as long as you limit the depth so it doesn't go infinite you're fine.
pmx··on I brought my childhood imaginary friend back to life using A.I
>And of course, I integrated #GPT3 with the Microwave's API so it could still function normally as a voice-controlled microwave.

GPT3 was linked up to the API of the smart microwave so it had the ability to turn the thing on
