pmuw··on The infinite scroll may become endangered if controversial Calif. law passes
Its the combination of infinite scroll and algorithmic curation of audiovisual media, that is addictive. Its equivalent to a TV channel tailored just for your interests, and TV was considered very addictive in the past.

I wrote an infinite-scroll implementation for my blog. Infinite scrolling through a static bank of content (even with some randomized elements) is not engaging. You eventually make it to the bottom and think "that's it?"

There are other types of Internet communities where people can connect with each other, that do not involve infinite scrolling, algorithmic curation, and using your collected interests for targeted advertising. I would love to see regulation, just to see the value of Meta's user-profiling-data-assets shrink.

pmuw··on Apple confirms iOS 17.4 removes Home Screen web apps in the EU
There is a bug in Safari's Intelligent Tracking Protection where sometimes when I visit one of my own websites, it will refuse to send an auth cookie. ITP forces this behavior if you have used Safari for seven consecutive days without visiting a website... but it seems to occasionally happen by mistake, which is very frustrating UX. This problem doesn't exist with home-screen web apps, which are now unavailable in the EU.
pmuw··on Ask HN: What is the most unique website you’ve come across on the internet?
https://redpandafinder.com

Its a family tree of zoo-born red pandas with almost 30,000 pictures (hand-tagged and searchable) and over 1300 animals.

I'm proud of making it for many reasons, but this is the biggest one: if you pick an animal and swipe through a few dozen photos, you start seeing a little life, growing and changing, and eventually ending. It's a precious lens on the world.
