pmiri··on Why Walking Meetings Work
Saw a comment long ago mentioning that our early nomadic ancestors must have spent much of their time wandering the landscape, probably for miles a day. What neglect do we bring to our brains when we don't do even a fraction of this?
pmiri··on How to Raise Money (2013)
> I am impressed with how clear and lucid this dude is with his words.

Just about my favorite thing about good business writers is that, just like in a good sale or pitch, they communicate clearly, concisely, and with a serious economy of words.

Conversely, never trust a business person who can't write a simple article.

pmiri··on Digital Ocean Managed Databases
This is the product that can finally get me to totally switch off of AWS.

Droplets <- EC2

Spaces <- S3

Managed Databases <- RDS

pmiri··on Ask HN: What are some of the best technical talks you've heard?
Propositions as Types by Philip Wadler

A really in depth look into why functional languages stand out as a programming paradigm. The short of it being that they parallel perfectly (almost proof for proof!) with mathematical logic.

pmiri··on Lessons From a Failed Startup — From and For First Time Founders
Really great distinction made regarding raising.

It's not about having the time to think up and try a bunch of different ideas, but executing a list of prepared hypotheses. This would pitch way better to VCs, too.

pmiri··on Who Invented the iPhone?
This article ties well to the excellent book "The Entrepreneurial State" by Mariana Mazzucato.

Apple did an excellent job of bringing together a lot of existing technology into a viable consumer product, but it is still important to note that much of that tech was powered by state-funded initiatives, instead of Silicon Valley, VC-funded projects.

pmiri··on [dead]
The actual problem is thinking you can communicate to the British masses via a Twitter thread. completely detached.
pmiri··on Hundreds of Roman gold coins found in basement of old theater
Best word of the article has to be numismatist: expert in rare coins.
pmiri··on WatermelonDB, a database for React and React Native apps
This looks really good, actually. Having used SQLite, I waited a long time for a good, functional, easily-debuggable DB for React Native.

Realm didn't cut it on the debugging part.

pmiri··on GIMP receives a $100K donation
Buried lede here is this Handshake.org thing. Anybody have any idea about what this is?
pmiri··on Leonardo Da Vinci's to Do List (Circa 1490)
Da Vinci actually wrote all his personal works backwards, for reasons unknown!
pmiri··on The Free Stack – Running Your Application for Free on AWS
I always enjoy articles like this, but must counterbalance with the vast vast cost saving of working with a stack with which you're familiar.
pmiri··on Show HN: Checklist of over 100 directories to submit your startup
I'm always wary of startup founders sharing startup launches to each other. Big red flag. Completely skews all advice/critique/reception.
pmiri··on Random Points on a Sphere
It was a real treat seeing his name at the start of this.
pmiri··on Ask HN: What’s your “Everyone has a price” experience?
Having a job in the first place.
pmiri··on How Twitch Learned to Make Better Predictions About Everything (2017)
Great article. Agile has some similar tactics that are worth preserving like the "cone of uncertainty".
pmiri··on Ask HN: What was your most productive (day|week|month|year) ever?
For my final semester of university, I read tons of books, wrote lots of essays (both for school and personal), worked a paying side-contract, and went 110% on a project for school.

My schedule made this possible. All my classes started in the afternoon and ended at 10 at the latest. This matched with my natural levels of productivity perfectly. Reading and podcasts in the morning, homework/class in the afternoon, and pure output at night. It was perfect and I know I'll be spending the next while trying create the conditions to live like that again.

pmiri··on Show HN: Detect when VIPs (investors, journalists, etc) sign up for your product
Congrats on launching.

The front page feels pretty cluttered with stuff like the code snippet acting as a link to the payment page(?).

I think a monthly billing strategy is not beneficial. If I'm an early startup, I'm probably struggling to get signups in the first place, let alone VIPs.

What about one-shot mass uploads? I only need you to check the data once and (unless your VIP db updates) the data I get back is settled once and for all. Could easily lead companies to pay you $19 to upload 10'000 emails and then cancel their account.

Your market seems to be businesses who do many low-touch sales.

Other than that, it's an interesting idea and I'm curious about seeing it in action.

pmiri··on Show HN: Kismet – get an e-mail introduction to a fellow HN member every day
I like it so far. The instant first email match is great, but it happens while I'm setting my info, so it leaves introductions to be a little.. barren?
pmiri··on Ask HN: Would you pay to have a penpal?
While I would love to find a penpal, I don't think I'd pay for such a thing. I can only imagine the pricing revolving around a convenience fee, and that's not too much to hang a business on.
pmiri··on Ask HN: If you could only code with one language which would it be?
If this is a desert island-type scenario, haskell.

If I had actual time limits, python.

pmiri··on Show HN: More feedback for Show HN stories
I think "hot take mode" is hilarious and needs to be more present in your UI. Neat idea
pmiri··on How to Be a Rocket Ship: Be More Productive One Minute at a Time
We had a big revolution in management a couple decades ago when we realized we couldn't just work people like robots. Why are going back full circle?!
pmiri··on How to Be a Rocket Ship: Be More Productive One Minute at a Time
Doesn't anyone else shudder at how honestly they express productivity as a simple brain chemistry hack? Is work supposed to be a Skinner Box?
