pmarsh··on Why LinkedIn dumped HTML5 and went native for its mobile apps
While HTML might have caused struggles for them with large amounts of users I wanted to just offer up that we have found it to be quite useful in a small/medium business for enterprise apps on smaller subsets of devices. So we do not have to worry about supporting every device and OS flavor under the sun.

We are a small dev team and being able to use a web stack prevents us from being spread too thin across too many different technologies.

Is it as "smooth" as native? No, but it gets the information and functionality, the most important parts, to the people who need it and allows us to quickly turn around projects.

And not being native allows us to customize UI to fit each group's particular needs more easily. At least it seems that way.

pmarsh··on Windows 8 now up to 3.31% market share as Vista finally falls below the 5% mark
Instead of going through the trouble of downgrading his machine take 30 minutes to walk through his problems and educate the poor guy.
pmarsh··on An App That Moves Sports Fans to Better Seats
Yeah connectivity is going to continue to only slowly get better. The cost of upgrading the infrastructure is just so high and older venues don't always have the room for upgrading DAS systems.

It'll be another 3 years before things are really ironed out in the newer buildings. Not sure how older ones will manage to deal with the situation.

pmarsh··on Six months with Meteor: Why the future of the web is real-time
Not sure how real-time web applies when your content (company websites) does not require it.

The way it would transform it is if you could find a way to make it more like a web-app. A good way to think about pushing your site to keep fresh, but isn't necessarily a needed direction to go in.

pmarsh··on A $4.99 utility that might just have saved Windows 8
To me the Start screen is just the start menu full-screen.

I rarely see it except on boot up, then I goto my desktop and everything is right there as I left it on windows 7.

I could understand my folks being confused by it but the number of techies who have been grinding their teeth really has me puzzled. Am I alone on this?

pmarsh··on Ask HN: Webdevs, designers: what devtools should we (Mozilla) build in Firefox?
How much RAM do you find FF using? And how much do you have in your machine?

Just curious because I rarely find FF creeping up towards a gig and RAM is so ridiculously cheap most of what I have just sits around doing nothing. (Edit: shouldn't have said nothing, but I'm not maxing out even with 4GB unless I am working in Photoshop/Illustrator)

pmarsh··on Ruby on Rails 4.0.0.beta1 released
But if two pages have the same resource URLs for their css, js, etc they should be cached by the browser so moving from page to page shouldn't be reloading them.

This does not seem like a super great idea, like merry-christmas mentioned too much like ASP.NET.

I'll do some reading on turbolinks and see if there's something super I'm missing.

pmarsh··on On the state of Windows on the desktop
Sure you know but you could just edit the PATH variable as well so you don't have to muddy up c:\windows.
pmarsh··on Every NFL play for the past 10 years in CSV format
There is a lot to have fun with here. I would imagine though that in a lot of NFL coaching rooms there has to be a balance between coaching and analysis.

Like someone else said, it's about match-ups.

pmarsh··on E17 (Enlightenment) enters alpha after 12 years
Since you start the nostalgia train. I remember recompiling the kernel over and over again with different options and modules.

I remember the ripples and the flames on the logon screen. Downloading the latest source of E almost nightly. Spending time hanging out on #E.

Good times.

Turn that monitor to portrait mode. 1080x1920 is a great way to read the web.
pmarsh··on Amazon’s new Kindle Paperwhite e-reader comes with frontlit screen
This doesn't seem to be an e-ink display though. Am I wrong? I hope they aren't planning on getting rid of e-ink I much prefer it to any screen.
pmarsh··on App.net, like I need another bug tracker
I would consider App.net successful if it pushes Facebook and Twitter to adopt some of what App.net is setting out to accomplish.

Would it be great if App.net flourishes to the point of being a continued relevant tool and site for years? Of course.

But its goals are worth keeping track of and working towards. No need to get so worked up about it against it.

pmarsh··on Company withdrawing from Facebook as analytics show 80% of ad clicks from bots
Not saying that's not the case, but you have no data or knowledge to back any of that up. I wouldn't assume a problem is easy or hard until I've got sufficient info on it.

Too often I've heard "how could XYZ not have done this, fixed that?" Then have that same party sign on board to fix this "easy" problem and get themselves in a world of hurt.

pmarsh··on Firefox 15 plugs the add-on leaks
That's exactly my question. Read through the comments here and just elsewhere when it comes to Firefox memory usage and there's usually enough people complaining about how after leaving it open days on end with 20 tabs it uses a ton of RAM.
pmarsh··on Firefox 15 plugs the add-on leaks
One of the issues I've seen people complain about is having to close Firefox after a few days. I understand you shouldn't HAVE to close a program, but how are people using their browsers that this becomes such an huge problem?

pmarsh··on Facebook acquires Instagram
I am not an Instagram user, but after checking it out on my Android though it seems like if FB was playing keep away it was more likely to be trying to keep it out of Twitter's hands.
pmarsh··on Rails isn't for beginners
I think it would be helpful to explain a bit about the language of HTTP between the browser and server.

Perhaps that can help a lot to understand what the client is doing and what the server is doing. And it's pretty simple and straight forward.

pmarsh··on We Need to Talk About Android
After doing some research on security it seems that Android's problem is overblown. The malware I've come across mostly stems from people downloading random apps from the web and then granting full privileges to that app. Which in turn does things with the permissions the person granted it.

That doesn't really seem to be a security hole as much as it is a user problem.

I guess it's simple to say Android is insecure, but it doesn't seem to be the case. Any more so than a rootable iOS device.

Am I mistaken? Are there reports of apps gaining root access?

pmarsh··on .NET: So long and thanks for all the fish
In the end it all boils down to use the best tool for you for the job you're working on.

That aside, going from Rails to .NET MVC has been a lesson in patience. While I am glad to have skipped Webforms, there is still something about .NET MVC that weighs on new ideas.

It's just easier to get up and running with a Rails stack and get your idea out there.

But that's just me, maybe for you it's Python, or C or Assembly. Whatever it is you work best in that's what you use.

Posts like this can help a community identify weak points though so I'm always glad to see them.

pmarsh··on Code is indeed poetry: Van Gogh's Starry Night comes to Life
I was hesitant to comment about how that mimics what it would look like on mushrooms. But it is very interesting that the effects are the same.
pmarsh··on Ask HN: Did you learn a language this year?
C#, but that went hand in hand with the Visual Studio and IIS stack.

C# is good, IIS has a ways to go imho.

pmarsh··on Why Is the NFL Afraid of Technology?
I can't wait to have coaches using tablets and other gadgets! It's going to be great to watch the first iPad launched into orbit when it doesn't react properly.

That and I'd imagine using a touch screen in sub-zero weather might not be the easiest thing either.

Changes will be slow and deliberate.
