pm24601··on Facebook has struggled to hire talent since the Cambridge Analytica scandal
I will believe this story when the stock price actually goes down. Until then it is wishful schadenfreude.

As a point of reference Boeing's stock price hasn't really gone down, and Boeing's action killed people.

If the stock price doesn't go down Zuck will not care.

pm24601··on Ireland became a back door to Britain – The Spectator
Classic problem with single line of "defense" thinking. That defense has to be perfect.

Same problem in US with thinking that a border wall will help when most undocumented immigrants are visa overstays.

pm24601··on Examining Carlos Ghosn and Japan's System of 'Hostage Justice'
Or the US where only the wealthy can afford a defense.
pm24601··on Examining Carlos Ghosn and Japan's System of 'Hostage Justice'
What Ghosn is experiencing is identical to what the US justice system inflicts on non-wealthy people.

Poor people and even "middle class" cannot afford to be accused of a crime. It is incredibly, impossibly expensive to afford justice.

In the US, it is far cheaper to accept a plea deal for a crime - even if innocent. Look at the US numbers for accused that actually "get their day in court".

Nolo estimates over 90% of cases never go to trial (https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/how-criminal-cases-a... ) This sounds remarkably close to the Japanese numbers.

"A young couple was told to leave first, Bridges recalled. “They begrudgingly got up and left,” he said. Then an older man, who refused.

“He says, ‘Nope. I’m not getting off the flight. I’m a doctor and have to see patients tomorrow morning,’” Bridges said. The man became angry as the manager persisted, Bridges said, eventually yelling. “He said, more or less, ‘I’m being selected because I’m Chinese.’”

> Its not very easy to redesign the 737.

Too bad. I know I am now permanently reluctant to fly 737s

pm24601··on San Francisco, the City That Apps Built, or Destroyed
> the market in Marin has appreciated, but it’s remarkably removed from San Francisco and Silicon Valley because public transportation there is limited.

Who could imagine that how important public transportation is? </snark>

O.k. Imagine how messed up the database is.

What happens the next time the data is loaded. How does anyone figure out how far away anything is?

FYI - I had to trim title because the original title was too long.

Take this up with HN

pm24601··on Green New Deal Is Feasible and Affordable
Actually it works great for France.

Look at all the electrified trains that the French take to work instead of driving.

Decarbonization does mean going to 0% overnight.

pm24601··on The Cost of Dirty Money
> And also I would like to understand what is being done to stop or prevent other and future instances.

Nothing.

pm24601··on Self-driving cars will "cruise" to avoid paying to park
Neither can Lyft, Uber, etc. if there is not available GEOMETRIC capacity.

There is a fixed road area to work with.

pm24601··on Self-driving cars will "cruise" to avoid paying to park
The city government.

Governments exist to define and allocate common resources.

pm24601··on Self-driving cars will "cruise" to avoid paying to park
No. There is a big, big difference between a economically productive use of the common spaces and this unproductive abuse.

Unproductive abuse is a DDOS attack against the infrastructure that inhibits economically productive use of the space.

Cities should tax unproductive use at a prohibitively high rate to stop this DDOS attack.

pm24601··on Self-driving cars will "cruise" to avoid paying to park
> Which creates carpooling opportunities through economies of scale

Like busses and trains? Seriously. Public transit.

The issue is a geometric one. There is only a fixed road capacity. Consuming that road capacity with deadheading vehicles is the worst usage.

pm24601··on Self-driving cars will "cruise" to avoid paying to park
Taxis do park. (Hotels, airports, train stations)

Not parking means excess capacity is creating traffic jams. So to avoid paying for storage, self driving cars are going to consume energy and space in travel lanes.... cities should charge the f out this.

I don't know if "your shit title" is the current title chosen by someone else. Or the CNN title chosen by someone else.

pm24601··on 'Whistleblower' in White House security clearance office gets suspended

pm24601··on The number of pedestrians killed by cars keeps going up
Headline incorrect.

The number of humans killed by indifferent human engineering keeps going up.

Cars don't kill - road designers and human drivers do.

pm24601··on [dead]
To the OP on reddit - when it really mattered how come you did nothing?

I am glad I read this. More people need to be less naive about the way Silicon Valley really works.

We have this idealistic view of SV compared to the rest of the world.

SV has humans being nice to other humans.

SV has humans screwing over other humans.

Same as in every other part of the world.

pm24601··on Ask HN: Going from Developer to Manager. What should I know or learn?
High Output Management by Andy Grove manager-tools.com has a bunch of good podcasts I ran across platohq.com which is building a site for people like yourself to get mentorship.

As more my own personal advice... Recognize that you will have to:

1. fire people you like.

2. give up the option to work directly on code

3. spend more times in meetings

4. budget time more carefully

5. be careful what you say (things get misinterpreted)

....

so much more

The skills that make you a good developer are only 20% of the skills needed to be a good manager.

pm24601··on Texas has enough sun and wind to quit coal, Rice researchers say
Demand has always modulated. The article points out that there is excess wind/solar capacity available. More than enough to cover current demand. In the US, energy consumption per capita is declining.
pm24601··on Texas has enough sun and wind to quit coal, Rice researchers say
Texas is unique in another way. It's electrical system is not interconnected with the rest of the nation. https://www.nerc.com/AboutNERC/keyplayers/Documents/NERC_Reg...
pm24601··on Companies controlled by PE firms use bankruptcy to shed pension obligations
Only fix needed to "unbreak" Social Security:

Remove the income cap limit. ( https://www.fool.com/investing/2017/12/10/what-is-the-2018-m...)

All income over $128K is does not have a social security tax on it.

Remove the cap and there will be no problem.

pm24601··on Companies controlled by PE firms use bankruptcy to shed pension obligations
Reread the article. Clearly the PE owners have figured out exactly how to get all their money out before bankruptcy.

Sears, Toys R' Us, Marsh .... all brought by PE firms. All drained dry by interest payments, until there is nothing left.

The vampires have already gotten all the blood out of the body before bankruptcy occurs.

pm24601··on Companies controlled by PE firms use bankruptcy to shed pension obligations
> It should be a separate company that exists solely for the purpose of paying the benefits at retirement.

Yes. S.O.C.I.A.L. S.E.C.U.R.I.T.Y.

Look how well Americans will fight for and defend Social security benefits.

We really should just force an expansion of Social Security like most civilized countries.

pm24601··on Companies controlled by PE firms use bankruptcy to shed pension obligations
Fully funded pension plans are assets that a PE firm uses as collateral for the loan to do a hostile takeover of the firm.
