pluc··on Mullenweg has returned as CEO after attempted board ouster

pluc··on Ask HN: Career paths to consider if I am better at supporting than creating?
Developer Experience is gaining in popularity. Your clients are internal and your objective is to remove obstacles, create shortcuts, keep everyone happy and productive. Lots of it is communication, finding out everyone's pain points and discussing what is technically feasible to ease that frustration - so that may tickle your people/support string. Things that are/can be part of DevEx are DevOps/Platform Engineering/Infra/CI/CD, QA, IdP, internal frameworks, onboarding, etc. Fun stuff imo.
pluc··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
Could just be enabled with a simple update post-unboxing to make it compliant with that statement. Off by default but enabled as soon as it connects.
pluc··on The Last 24 Hours Are the Opening Scene in a Horror Movie
Precisely. These folks are in the middle of frontier AI development and they're saying "someone should do something". It's like saying "n-word". You're making me say it instead of just not saying it.
pluc··on Great Lakes sturgeon may be 400 years old:Scientists rethinking how to save them
Nobody is calling it Lake America but prime idiots and Google. America isn't the US but a little over half of them are too dumb to figure that out.

If you were out of the loop, the South Park show also changed its name to South America, because this is the timeline we live in.

I wonder if the NSA had done a "everyone, get behind this firewall" type of campaign if it would have been more successful/less leaky

Sure, two people did? The rest of the people mentioned in this social aggregate didn't.
pluc··on Matt Mullenweg tells Automattic staff in Slack he's back in control after ouster
From yesterday (or two days ago?):

> One person speculated that the timing may have something to do with Mullenweg’s annual trip to the Burning Man festival, after which he tends to return “with ideas.”

pluc··on Matt Mullenweg tells Automattic staff in Slack he's back in control after ouster
That'd be the first time I hear about that angle. Mullenweg was pretty public about why he was doing it and it never felt like it was someone else's idea, given his level of commitment. It would be smart to find a scapegoat if you want to stretch your tenure a few years though.

"We can't stop it!" say the people building the thing.
pluc··on Matt Mullenweg tells Automattic staff in Slack he's back in control after ouster
i'm gonna wait to hear it from the people who were saying yesterday they were in control if that's ok

> As of yet, no one at Automattic has heard a confirmation from the board. Mark Davies’ Slack account was also deactivated, sources said.

mhm, ok.

pluc··on Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood?
I submitted an article today, then withdrew it when I noticed it was AI generated. I think it's a matter of self-policing.

pluc··on NTSB issues investigative update on B-767 runway excursion accident in Miami
Wouldn't be a case of "if I fix it then there was nothing wrong"? How do you, as an inferior rank, step in to correct something that you think is going to happen? Imagine the inferior officer steps in and lands the plane, wouldn't the superior officer say well duh that's what I was doing why did you intervene? It's an interesting conundrum, I think, and may exacerbate the reaction or lack thereof..

You can pretty accurately fake a video these days, faking a screenshot is 7 year old level of skills.
pluc··on Mathematicians want proof OpenAI didn't use their work
We've had the end result all along without OpenAI. All this technology does is, for a subscription fee, adds a middleman who you can talk to naturally. How does that which solely uses all the technology preceding it, is by itself a benefit to humanity? Get your head out of the stock market, AI is by design not creating anything new.
pluc··on Mathematicians want proof OpenAI didn't use their work
Because it's not humanity that profits, it's OpenAI.

pluc··on The UN challenges five centuries of cartography
It may not have changed size, but other countries have gotten bigger. Especially "shithole countries". If other countries get bigger and the US does not, by virtue of US thought processes, the US has gotten smaller because it could have gotten bigger and it did not. USA #1 means USA gets all the things first, regardless of their value.
pluc··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
I think he has cultivated a group of yes-man to surround him and that he is so out of touch with non-WP reality that he thought he would be seen as a hero defending open-source ethics. He didn't account for the fact that everyone that he doesn't pay isn't under his spell, and that everyone saw the selfishness behind the heroism.
