plondon514··on MLB says Yankees’ new “torpedo bats” are legal and likely coming
Boone can't even cheat well
plondon514··on Playwright Tools for MCP
Anyone know how you would use this _within_ playwright to write playwright tests in natural language?
plondon514··on Has the decline of knowledge work begun?
Exactly, In my local pharmacy in NYC there is no attendant specifically for the self-checkouts, it's usually someone floating around or the same person doing manual checkout. In Japan the person is very present, willing to help, and says thank you very much, which also prompts me to say thank you in return.
plondon514··on Building a Firecracker-Powered Course Platform to Learn Docker and Kubernetes
I haven’t tried a course yet but Ivan, the creator, is great. IIRC codesandbox also uses firecracker and has a few blogposts on its setup
plondon514··on Has the decline of knowledge work begun?
In Japan right now and I see a ton of automation everywhere, self checkout at grocery stores and restaurants, but what you also see is a live humanbeing assigned to the machines to help you if you have issues.
plondon514··on Show HN: AI Powered Daily Budgeting
AI is used to compare incoming plaid transactions with preset recurring transactions: https://github.com/porkybank/porkybank/blob/main/lib/porkyba...

Matched transactions are ignored so as not to alter your daily budget.

plondon514··on The cochlear implant question
edit: castellano not catalan
plondon514··on The cochlear implant question
As the hearing brother of a deaf sister with hearing parents, what I usually tell people is to learn sign language and get the cochlear. Forcing only cochlear on the child means that the family does not live in the deaf world with their child, while only speaking SL might distance them and cause them to miss out on a lot in the hearing world.

It reminds me of basque spain, where everyone speaks catalan and some people continue to speak euskera at home or with friends they know can speak.

plondon514··on Cats are (almost) liquid
I accidentally closed a very heavy door on my childhood cat and thought I killed it but it just bounced back and was perfectly fine.
plondon514··on Ask HN: Is there any software you only made for your own use but nobody else?
Also working on a budgeting app because everyone on the market is so annoying to use. Designed from the ground up just for my wife and I, we both love it: https://porkybank.io
plondon514··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2024)
Thank you to the work you and everyone else at the MTA does!
plondon514··on The last crimes of Caravaggio
According to Wikipedia the painting is part of the Louvres permanent collection (Paris)

plondon514··on Ask HN: Question on YC Application
YC requires anyone with 10% or more equity to be a founder. No way this uncle should getting that for an idea.
plondon514··on The Average New Yorker Spends $10,454 in Upfront Costs for a Rental
Broker fees are the biggest scam. I’m surprised that StreetEasy or another player like compass hasn’t been able to disrupt on this more. As a renter you basically do all the work to find an apartment and then shell out thousands to a broker who… lets you into the apartment for 5 minutes to see it
plondon514··on I worry our Copilot is leaving some passengers behind
Is it just me or has copilot gotten progressively worse lately? It used to feel like it was making well informed guesses, now they feel like literal guesses with no context at all. For example in my phoenix live view (elixir) app it guesses “xxx@xxxxx” for _any_ attribute I pass in to a component.
plondon514··on Firefly III: A free and open source personal finance manager
Right now just unmanaged postgres instance hosted on fly.io
plondon514··on Firefly III: A free and open source personal finance manager
Yes, she does! She checks it everyday and she loves the simplicity of it.

I also tried the spreadsheet approach since I was so frustrated with budgeting apps, but they're a bit overwhelming for some.

plondon514··on Firefly III: A free and open source personal finance manager
Thanks for the feedback, it's like a forecasting feature. Say you want to spend over budget today, you can see how that changes your daily budget 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, etc. out from today. Or let's say you plan on being frugal for the next few days and will spend only $20.00 over the next 3 days, by the 4th day your daily budget will adjust accordingly: https://imgur.com/a/hD9R2zv
plondon514··on Firefly III: A free and open source personal finance manager
After reading the comments in this thread I may consider open sourcing my side project porkybank.io. You can check out an example here: https://porkybank.io/example/overview

It's a simple daily budgeting app I put together for my wife and I to help us be more cognizant of our daily spending. Upvotes count as interest.

plondon514··on Firefly III: A free and open source personal finance manager
I built https://porkybank.io for my wife and I for this very purpose
plondon514··on YC: Requests for Startups
I don’t think this is true at all. I did YC and neither I nor my cofounders had any hype surrounding us or our idea. Unless if by hype you mean a handful of paying users then sure, that won’t hurt :)
plondon514··on Quebec man who blamed wildfires on government pleads guilty to setting 14 fires

plondon514··on Salesforce and Slack to pause all hiring in technology and product
Slack was pretty much a perfect product 7 years ago. What have they added besides huddles that is actually useful? How many engineers are needed for maintaining an already really good product? Is it really a complex enough system to be hiring indefinitely?
plondon514··on Elixir is now a gradually typed language
Very happy about this, switched companies recently and Elixir was the language of choice. Coming from TypeScript, I missed a lot of the benefits of a typed language and having access to the data model from anywhere in the project. Elixir was already great, but this is a huge improvement, congrats to the team that worked on this!
plondon514··on Ask HN: Any felons successfully found IT work post-release?
This might be a good place to mention the Columbia Center for Justice which offers Justice Through Code, a bootcamp for the previously incarcerated. Someone I mentored there last year has successfully found work. I’d be happy to share more details through email.

plondon514··on Ask HN: How Do You Budget?
Interesting! I’d never want my bank to _enforce_ a daily limit though, I’d just like to know roughly what we can spend today.

We tried spreadsheets but that’s a bit too manual for us.

plondon514··on Fly Postgres, Managed by Supabase
Very excited about this. We’re currently running a large db on fly and looking for a managed pg. We’re a fully Elixir shop and this couldn’t have come at a better time. Congrats to both teams!
plondon514··on Ask HN: What apps have you created for your own use?
I created a super simple web app (using Phoenix LiveView) to track spending and budgets. I found all the options to be overly complicated. My wife and I have monthly recurring spends (rent, healthcare, subscriptions, etc.) that we share and we each want to know what our daily spending limit is.

I couldn't find a simple app that would automatically read our transactions reliably and generate this daily spending limit.

My app does 2 things: Shows transactions: https://imgur.com/a/aJ9G02q Shows limit overviews: https://imgur.com/a/ugnmnFq

Stack: - Phoenix LiveView - Postgres - Plaid

plondon514··on Show HN: Get NYC Bikeshare Availability via SMS so I can give up my smartphone
