plexicle··on Cloud AI Platform Pipelines
Ah, thanks for pointing that out. Added my upvote. Cheers!
plexicle··on The good parts of AWS: a visual summary
> Reserved capacity will beat on-demand pretty handily, even with massive overprovisioning. Assuming a 50% target and a 16 hour daily duty cycle, reserved provisioned is 20% the cost of running on-demand.

I don't have the math on hand at the moment.. but switching to on-demand for us resulted in HUGE savings. We weren't overprovisioned either, but we were kind of spiky (in fact we were underprovisioned for a lot of the day).

plexicle··on Cloud AI Platform Pipelines
Nothing near that specific unfortunately. Not much more than "snake" (and occasionally wildly inaccurate species). At least with the ~20 or so photos that I just tested with.
plexicle··on Cloud AI Platform Pipelines
Yeah that's the one I was talking about. It gives some labels about stuff in the image and it works well. But Google Lens is on a different level -- you can send it a picture of a breed or a snake and it will return species and subspecies. Can't find anything like that in the GCP offering.
plexicle··on Cloud AI Platform Pipelines
The pre-built pipeline components look interesting.

I wish Cloud AI offered an API for the kind of results that I get when I use Google Lens. None of the ML offerings seem to come even close with labels.

plexicle··on Tesla's self driving algorithm's overlay [video]
"The dancing cars were fixed several months ago in an update."

On the latest software and with HW 2.5, this is not true. It's still very much there.

plexicle··on Tesla's self driving algorithm's overlay [video]
"Self-driving is largely a reaction to the single-person-single-car scale problem."

What in the world? No it is not.

plexicle··on How Popular Is “Sign in with Apple”?

plexicle··on Typing inside of the default WSL terminal feels amazing (2018)
It is MUCH faster.
plexicle··on TypeScript 3.7
`?` will short-circuit. Nothing is evaluated after that.
plexicle··on Google Buys Fitbit for $2.1B
Wow what a bunch of FUD.
plexicle··on Alphabet in bid to buy Fitbit
Well in this case, Google kind of has to do something with wearables. Apple Watch is pulling people over.

Unless you were suggesting in your comment that Apple should release the AW from the walled garden and allow it to work on Android? In that case, I agree!

plexicle··on Electron 7.0
700MB on my machine. Logged in to 4 active workspaces.
plexicle··on A Message about iOS Security
What are you talking about? Google neither sends nor sells any of your data to "third parties". I don't know why people parrot this nonsense.
plexicle··on Apple Watch detects irregular heart beat in large U.S. study
Happy 4 year domain birthday!
plexicle··on $35,000 Tesla Model 3 Available Now
"A tax credit reduces the taxable amount of income you owe taxes on"

is not the same thing as:

"Tax credits reduce the amount of income tax you owe"

The former is a deduction. The latter is a credit. It's really that simple.

plexicle··on $35,000 Tesla Model 3 Available Now
You just described a deduction.

A credit is literally cash (assuming you have enough liability to cover it).

plexicle··on How I'm still not using GUIs in 2019: A guide to the terminal
"Not every machine has VSCode, Sublime or Atom installed, but every machine has a terminal."

I love that the article goes from this sentence immediately to:

"These are the main programs I use to make my terminal a complete development environment:"

And proceeds to list 5 different programs, some of which are only available on macOS.

Brilliant.

Edit: One of which are only available*. My point isn't that there isn't a place for GUI and terminal, it's that "not every machine has x and y software" is a fruitless argument.

plexicle··on Start with a Website, Not a Mobile App
Chrome on Android will show a banner to add it to your home screen.
plexicle··on New Google Pixel 3, Pixel Slate, and Home Hub
This isn't true anymore. I'm using Docker on my Pixelbook right now. No hacks required.
plexicle··on New Google Pixel 3, Pixel Slate, and Home Hub
Just to add my data point --

I've had every Nexus and Pixel starting with the Galaxy Nexus.

Never had an issue with any of them until my most recent Pixel 2 XL where some cables stopped charging the device. One quick open chat on the Google store and I had a replacement sent immediately for free.

plexicle··on How Discord Handles Two and Half Million Concurrent Voice Users Using WebRTC
Also rocking a ModMic5 and a keyboard with Brown switches. Never had an issue transmitting when I wasn't actually speaking. Both in Discord and Slack.
plexicle··on TypeScript 3.0
VS Code is great.

But "best" is pretty subjective.

plexicle··on Announcing TypeScript 3.0
As much as I love the idea of letting the browser do some crazy optimization with native types -- I don't think it will ever happen. Or perhaps maybe it shouldn't happen.

The only reason TS is able to iterate so quickly is because of the compilation cycle. Without it, progress forward would probably come to a screeching halt.

plexicle··on Announcing TypeScript 3.0
Honestly they're not even close. TS has been eating Flow's lunch pretty much all year. It won't be long now.
plexicle··on Show HN: HyperApp – 1k JavaScript framework for building web applications
Loving Polymer 3.0 and the new lit-element (which I believe just straight up used lit-html behind).
plexicle··on TweetDelete – Automatically delete your posts that are older than a maximum age
You're both half-right.

Comments that are deleted (either self-deleted, removed by a mod/admin, or deleted from account deletion) will disappear as long as no one replied to it. This behavior is the same, no matter how the comment gets deleted.

If the comment has at least one reply, then the username will become [deleted] (or [removed]), but the comment/content will remain.

plexicle··on React v16.3.0: New lifecycles and context API
I don't buy that. I actually see Angular being USED in big corporate environments. I hear from friends about how their team is USING it.

I hear people TALK a lot about Vue. Nothing against it, I enjoyed my little hobby project in it. But way more people talk about using Vue than actually using it. In no way is it "eating Angular's lunch". This is coming from someone quite critical of Angular.

plexicle··on Godot at GDC 2018
Looks great! I've heard of Godot quite a bit and have been meaning to check it out.

Boy do I feel like a dummy though... I thought it was "Go"dot and it was built with and/or uses Go(lang). Can't say I wasn't just a tiny bit disappointed!

In any case, I just checked out some of the videos and the IDE in particular looks pretty amazing. Will check it out for sure.

plexicle··on GitHub is forcing me to change my username, and will not tell me why
Perhaps because they aren't ready to announce what they're working on yet? Just one of a few examples I can think of why they don't owe you a reason.

It sucks that they're making you change your name and it's obviously inconvenient. They've at least offered some kind of compensation.

It looks like you lucked out that there's no activity or repositories linked to it that would break from the change.

This seems like a lot of fuss for nothing.
