plessthanpt05··on Ask HN: Are .io domains still considered good for (web based) startups?
What if you don't plan on releasing an app, but just want a web presence for your startup -- is .app a good idea in this case?
plessthanpt05··on Ask HN: Are .io domains still considered good for (web based) startups?
In my experience it's not that another company has the .com for what I'm looking for, but a squatter has parked it or a reseller is asking $100s or $1000s.
plessthanpt05··on Google is always listening: Live Test
Just a guess, but I've noticed that HN scrubs the front page of all kinds of stuff pretty quickly -- not just hot button issues (e.g. political stuff or the like).
plessthanpt05··on U.S. Launches Attacks on Syria
Scrubbed from the front page, huh?
plessthanpt05··on Ask HN: What laptop do you use?
Thinkpad t4X0p (e.g. t470p) w/ your favorite Linux flavor (I prefer Debian).
plessthanpt05··on Merriam-Webster Adds 850 new words and definitions
Where's the list? They mention far less than 850 words.
plessthanpt05··on Ask HN: Where do you buy static website templates?
I've had luck with themehunt in the past (as you mentioned coming across already).
plessthanpt05··on Like Peter Thiel, Tech Workers Feel Alienated by Silicon Valley ‘Echo Chamber’
Escaping liberal Silicon Valley for super conservative Los Angeles huh? If it were Orange county I might buy it, but moving to Hollywood Hills...come'on.

Seems like a PR stunt.

plessthanpt05··on A growing number of young Americans are leaving desk jobs to farm
I might have missed it from just quickly looking at that source, but what do they think is causing this increase of melanoma in office workers?
plessthanpt05··on Amazon’s product pages appear to be down for some users in rare outage

plessthanpt05··on “Stop Zillow”
Honest question, how is this new aspect of zillow different from what opendoor does?
plessthanpt05··on U.S. Launches over 50 Missiles at Syrian Military Base
Yeah, I had never heard of it before, so wasn't sure of it's reputation & whether or not to post it. (...guess not)
plessthanpt05··on U.S. Launches over 50 Missiles at Syrian Military Base
"THE US has launched a massive cruise missile strike against Syria – despite a warning from Russia not to get involved."

plessthanpt05··on The Google Brain Team – Looking Back on 2016
Not really true...tenured professors pretty much have perfect job security for life.
plessthanpt05··on Ask HN: Best ultrabook for Linux?
the thinkpad t460s is amazing...and supports up to 20gb ram.
plessthanpt05··on The Big Data Brain Drain: Why Science is in Trouble
this should have landed on the front page...
plessthanpt05··on First impressions of the IPython Notebook
The essay doesn't touch this issue, but I think it should also be mentioned that the iPython notebook's ability to issue parallel jobs (particularly across multiple machines) is really amazing! This was a huge draw for me in starting to use it.
plessthanpt05··on First impressions of the IPython Notebook
I use the mentioned "It's all Text" in Firefox (to pop open gvim) alongside another addon called "Vim Fx"; these two addons together provide for a far superior experience than the vanilla iPython notebook. Though I'm still hoping they integrate vim keybindings eventually -- I've noticed that there are some branches on github w/ these, but can hardly wait to see that kind of thing surface in master.
plessthanpt05··on First impressions of the IPython Notebook
the R community has recently & rapidly been building a notebook environment similar to that of the iPython notebook.
plessthanpt05··on First impressions of the IPython Notebook
The writer's remark:

'''...after prototyping in the notebook, I usually refactor some of my code into individual Python files so that I can edit more comfortably using my preferred text editor. I then import those modules [back] in the...notebook.'''

I found this to be quite a headache myself, going between the iPython notebook and vim, until I discovered this great Firefox addon called "It's all text" [not affiliated] -- for those unaware, it lets you pop open a gui editor of your choice, whereupon you can send the text entered from that back down into the iPython notebook. Doing it this way you get the best of both worlds.

plessthanpt05··on What advice would you give your 16 year old self?
Study (& enjoy) math ...that's what I'd tell my 16 year old self.
plessthanpt05··on The Rise and Fall of Programming Languages in 2011
I better drop Python & Ruby and go pick up (sure, will do right now) Objective-C & C#. Well, I suppose at least they [Python & Ruby] still "...are the most interesting" (?!) so guess I'll stick w/ 'em for a bit longer. ...she'sus.
plessthanpt05··on The Experience Economy
point taken, though to say,

"The emphasis on experiences also helps explain other large trends like the migration to cities. Cities have always offered the trade-off of fewer goods and less space in exchange for better experiences."

...is just false & i certainly don't agree with this assertion -- to each is own, but i live in a small town in the mountains and it's pretty rad. i love city life just the same, but the reason most people have moved to cities is because that's where higher paying jobs typically are located. this essay makes way too many assumptions.

plessthanpt05··on Python Fundamentals Tutorial
I like the description of decorators under the functional programming section (13.10) -- I've tried to explain their use to folks in the past and never quite felt like I did a decent enough job, but this explanation is pretty good.
plessthanpt05··on Python is a voluntary language
Nice point, and really, how many folks actually find writing code in Python cumbersome or "work" like some languages? It's not perfect and of course if you need really fast computing, it's obviously not (even close to) the best for speed, but it's expressiveness & readability are a pretty big step up from most other languages.

Also, I hadn't seen this essay by PG before (from the comments); a bit old, but interesting take:

plessthanpt05··on Cubby Is Like Dropbox... If Dropbox Also Had Free, Unlimited Syncing
dropbox, you've been really good to me, but the competition has really got you in the crosshairs.... (and i'm a linux user, which doesn't even work with this [yet?...or google drive], but the competition really has become pretty serious lately).
plessthanpt05··on Ubuntu To Soon Ship On 5% Of PCs
If these figures are legit, then this is pretty cool news for the open source / Linux community; however, wonder what real user #'s look like since this "...count also obviously doesn't count those that install Ubuntu manually or obtain Ubuntu installations via other means," which seems to be the way that most folks currently get Ubuntu. Either way, hope the trend continues so, at the very least, consumers come to realize there is an alternative to Windows (besides Mac of course).
plessthanpt05··on Ubuntu's Mark Shuttleworth on shaking up system software
Have been with Debian for quite a while, but installed this new Ubuntu LTS the other day on a development box and have to say, I'm pretty impressed. Seemingly quite stable w/ plenty of nice UI eye-candy. Only criticism is that it hides a bit of the default customisation settings stuff from the last time I used Ubuntu (last LTS), however, it's definitely a nice push forward for the linux community (in so far as perhaps drumming up new open source users). Would have been nice to see a shout to Debian in the article, but hey, just glad open source is gaining broader appeal and hopefully, at the very least, it's a foot in door for greater linux adoption.
plessthanpt05··on U.S. busts Tor drug market, arrests eight
hahaha...seriously? with PayPal? i suppose it could (maybe) be done with prepaid credit cards, but still.
plessthanpt05··on Light Table's Numbers, And What's Happening Next
Javascript and Clojure? Seems like, a'hem, Python support might be of interest to some of us ;)
