playeren··on Boeing cuts flight training pilots, will outsource jobs overseas
While I do not believe there are many incentives for Boeing to be frank about its motivations or the specifics of the layoffs, I am glad you added this article, as it does provide a response to the allegations, and more details to further probe.
playeren··on Boeing cuts flight training pilots, will outsource jobs overseas
This is a wild stab in the dark, but it could be some sort of legal distancing or compartmentalization of liability. If this is a pure cost-cutting measure, it hardly seems worth the optics of this action.

playeren··on Anxiety, depression, and PTSD may be adaptive responses to adversity: study
I am a bit confused by your comment. When you write 'legitimate reasons', do you mean from a _moral_ stand point? I can't otherwise make sense of 'legitimacy' in this context.

edit: Do you mean 'legitimate' in the context of it increasing evolutionary fitness in some way?

playeren··on Two more restaurants in Toronto just got rid of tipping
>If the service quality drops - customers will go elsewhere.

Wouldn't that be incentive to provide good service?

I ask because some of the best restaurants in the world do not expect you to tip - ie. Danish restaurants Noma and Alchemist.

playeren··on Google forced OnePlus to decimate a Fortnite launcher deal, claims Epic Games
Yes, and I know several of my friends and family who shop in different supermarkets for that reason. How many do you know that have both an iPhone and an Android phone?
playeren··on Google forced OnePlus to decimate a Fortnite launcher deal, claims Epic Games
I don't think your analogy is making any strong points, because there aren't just two supermarkets in the whole world.

I can choose from 4 different supermarkets within walking distance, and an additional 3 if you count online supermarkets that deliver to my area. That is not the case when it comes to choosing a mobile OS/app store.

playeren··on Quantum mechanics is immune to the butterfly effect
Thank you. It's exactly clarifying comments like this, that is my main reason for posting articles here.

playeren··on Telegram files EU antitrust complaint against Apple’s App Store
My understanding of the matter is that while KODA and Google were negotiating, Google insisted their cut be raised with 80% until they reach a new agreement at an unknown date in the future.

I would also be wary of letting the other party in a negotiation create strong incentives to never reach a new mutually beneficial agreement.

playeren··on Is Joe Rogan right about young men and video games?
One could also make a similar argument about wasting time on podcasts and youtube videos, giving the illusion of gaining wisdom and experience.

I think there is a point to made about dopamine addiction and the businesses that knowingly or not prey on those attributes of human nature, but I don't think this article nor Mr. Rogan's podcast is giving any interesting or useful insight.

Oh well, back to my crosswords!

edit: I also wanted to mention Tobi Lütke (Shopify) who firmly believes in the value of lessons that can learned through gaming:

"It's insanely hard to become a pro in Starcraft, significantly harder than it is to get a degree. So I feel like this should be highly valuable on a CV. My offer to bring in ex pro players is more general than my offer to select for an internship,"

playeren··on Loopy: a tool for thinking in systems
I've messed around with it a bit, and it's actually pretty great for agent based modelling & Monte Carlo simulations. It does have nice visualizations, but not so much geared toward representing complex relationships, but rather showing realtime/step-by-step representations of simple relationships. But, I have only played around with it for a bit - I may very well be grossly underselling it.
playeren··on Uber wants to cut costs by shifting its engineering to India
It's the growth that costs money.

Operational costs have only recently become a concern, after becoming publicly traded.

playeren··on Elon Musk, Tech’s Cash-Poor Billionaire
Maybe it is the other way around; we can't afford _not_ to spend 10s of trillions on moonshots. Depends on how sustainable one thinks the status quo is, and the risk timeframe for potential consequenses.
playeren··on iPhone SE: The One-Eyed King?
> If so, I didn't catch that!

The reasoning for including the picture is in the actual _text_ of the article. I do not wish to antagonize people who have trouble reading, but I also think they shouldn't be surprised when they miss out on material information.

playeren··on Bosses panic-buy spy software to keep tabs on remote workers
As someone who has recently seen a lot of freelance work as a "Remote Coach" for companies who aren't used to remote teams, I have the following observation: If you have trouble managing remote teams, you're likely not great at managing teams in general.

The largest part of my calls were not about remote specific topics, but rather general management topics like result-oriented management vs time management and how trust and alignment is foundational for motivation.

Not surprising in hindsight, but due to selection bias from working remotely for many years now, I'm used to companies who don't require spyware to get results from their team, and was quite taken aback at first.

playeren··on McDonald's app bug let people order for free in France
Disregarding the point op was trying to make; the ability to spot the inaccuracy might have had more to do with the hiring decision, than the monetary value of the bug itself.
playeren··on Wacom tablets track every app you open
If you have large data-sets/streams, companies like Acxiom and Innovis are interested buyers. Are you trying to imply that brokering consumer data is a marginal or non-existant business?
playeren··on The Hummer is coming back as an electric vehicle
Electric motors still have a thermal signature, although obviously way smaller than a combustion engine + exhaust. Also, diesel doesn't really catch fire that easily (some tanks even proudly 'wear' extra fuel cans on their sides). Diesel is still very, very energy dense compared to batteries (for the time being), so for any campaigns away from established infrastructure, you'd rather be hauling diesel than batteries.

playeren··on Google developing all-in-one messaging app for businesses
I'm trialing using Twist together with Miro, and it is pretty magical.

Twist busts silos just as Slack can, but with less "notification firehose" potential, and then defaulting to Miro's visual board when upgrading to synchronous comms works really great.
