platesmead··on Domestic cats kill 1.3–4.0B birds and 6.3–22.3B mammals annually
I suppose I'm wondering that since domestic cats are already well introduced, perhaps removing them can also have unforeseen negative impacts to the environment!
platesmead··on Flock Safety's controversial CEO just got a taste of his own medicine
Okay, reading car plates. Again, campaign to make it illegal.

If cats are killing wild animals that happen to flourish in human environments, is that such a loss to biodiversity?

(Genuine Q. I don't know anything about what biodiversity folk look for.)

"Doxxing is bad except when it's against people I dislike"?

If people don't want CCTV, campaign to make it illegal.

Are they counting the loss due to human-induced reduction of biodiversity? E.g. wiping native land and replacing it with houses/cities/roads.

Humanity has a cost on nature, that should be mitigated.

Humans like domestic cats, which is one contributor to the overall human-induced reduction in biodiversity.

I wonder also whether there's something about towns/cities that makes birds flourish, compared to other wild animals.

platesmead··on Internet centralization and the original sin of NAT
When I want to debug reachability concerns, it's a shame that I can only use ping/traceroute between the non-NAT peers, and then have to SSH to my reverse proxy to do yet another ping to the backend. Similar for tcpdump.

This is the cost to splitting your routing between layer 3 and 4.

I'm now IPv6 everywhere, and so I get to just use ping. Much simpler.

Further, protecting IPv6 services is simpler, because I can terminate (m)TLS on the backend. With a reverse proxy on another host, I have to have yet another means of securing the proxy-backend path. Yet more complexity!

> And the fact that consumers can't just directly connect to each other is a feature.

Consumers should be protected by firewalls. That's independent of routing.

platesmead··on Show HN: Yet another minimal and lightweight terminal multiplexer written in Go.
That post advocates for passthru terminal persistence, and instead letting your host terminal/WM be the multiplexer.

hrdx looks great, but as it does it's own multiplexing, I'm not sure the post's rationale is suggesting something like hrdx.

platesmead··on GitHub Publishes IPv6 Addresses for Git SSH remotes
Great. I have a few IPv6-only hosts, and having to workaround GitHub being ipv4-only was a pain, especially during turnup, since my host config is stored on GitHub.
platesmead··on Kobo can run apps now
I have a Kobo Clara. I'd one day like to mod this. Is there any indication that I need to avoid updates to prevent updates locking it down?

> How readable and accessible is this book?

It took me about 20-30 re-reads of the first page to understand it.

The rest of the chapter was then a bit easier. I gave up after that.

But it really is a great idea in the first few pages.

> This is because they aren't trying to display pain, even if it is real, they are trying to show the referee that a foul has a occurred, so they perform the act of "footballer in pain" even as they are actually in pain, and in fact are often in a weird way even masking their genuine natural reaction to the pain to do so.

Wow, I hadn't considered that final point.
