plasticchris··on In the Beginning Was the Command Line (1999)
Yes - people bought it to upgrade, as the step up from dos to 3.1 to win95 was huge.
plasticchris··on Secure Boot is broken on 200 models from 5 big device makers
Exactly why I do my own brakes.

And why I want to control my own keys.

plasticchris··on Intel says 13th and 14th Gen mobile CPUs are crashing
An issue with these parts was that the OOB config wasn’t very good - even if you knew to turn on the XMP profiles it still threw a ridiculous amount of voltage at the chip in pursuit of a few percent performance increase.
plasticchris··on Intel says 13th and 14th Gen mobile CPUs are crashing
I have a 3700x I keep around 1.05v and it is completely quiet (and p95 stable) under a massive air cooler which basically never spins up the fans.
plasticchris··on Trench collapses have killed hundreds of workers in the US over the last decade
Some thing that stuck with me early on in engineering school, there was an ethics seminar, and the instructor asked me what I would do if I were told to sign off on say some sort of waste dump into a residential area. The thing that stuck with me is he didn’t let me off the hook when I said I would say no he said OK so they fire you and now they sue you and what do you do now?
plasticchris··on Why Vivaldi won't follow the current AI trend?
Precisely the point, you cite the model and that’s it. Even when these models are known in some cases to reproduce training text directly.
plasticchris··on Nevada’s public employee pension fund invests passively and beats peers (2016)
Can’t argue with the math but there are still risks (inflation, the government that issues your currency, etc). I’ve seen people sell all investments to buy all the supplies they need to live out their lives, and I used to think it was insane. But it is just a different sort of hedge.
plasticchris··on Why Vivaldi won't follow the current AI trend?
The plagiarism argument is not necessarily directed at the user of the browser. Ask yourself who is doing the publishing? And how would you cite the output of an LLM if you did publish the output?
plasticchris··on AI's $600B Question
What a brave new world it would be.
plasticchris··on Show HN: I built an indie, browser-based MMORPG
Serious question: How is that different from anarchy?
plasticchris··on Neofetch developer archives all his repositories: "Have taken up farming"
I am descended from farmers on both sides. When I was young dad made me raise some livestock to really impress on me how bad a job it was. I got up before sunrise to feed them before school and so on. When I went to sell them dad sat me down at a spreadsheet and had me enter all the expenses and the net profit was something like 10 dollars for months of work. Most farmers I know have a second job just to stay afloat, or do it only because they know the quality they can get is so much better than store bought stuff.
plasticchris··on The Programmer's Brain (2021)
Have you read Facing Fearful Odds? It was recommended to me by one of the marines who survived.
plasticchris··on US proposes banning medical debt from credit reports
I once had a hospital try to balance bill me, which is and was illegal. They explained it to me and I asked why I should be accountable for the difference between a number they made up and a number the insurance company made up? Especially when these are deliberately inflated for negotiating. They dismissed the bill entirely.
plasticchris··on Why Triplebyte Failed
They told you (or me at least) almost exactly everything that would be in the interview ahead of time, to the point that I just recalled a lot from my notes I made the night before the call. Source: I completed the TB process, but it was 8ish years ago.
plasticchris··on Psychedelics are challenging the standard of randomized controlled trials
Just find people who have never done any drugs, they will have no idea what to expect and the placebo effect will be strong enough. I ate a regular brownie once in college (my friend left it on my door knob as a nice surprise). I was freaking out for a bit, having no idea what a pot brownie was like. Sat down next to someone playing wow and asked them to tell me if I started acting oddly.
plasticchris··on Tiny number of 'supersharers' spread the majority of fake news
So many points. Does your thinking start with “it is obvious that…” or “the right side of history” ? We as humans are just very susceptible to a combination of fallacy and social reinforcement, no matter our political stance.
plasticchris··on Tiny number of 'supersharers' spread the majority of fake news
This level of certainty is a bit frightening. We know what to do? These are complex issues with many trade offs and unintended consequences.
plasticchris··on Statement from Scarlett Johansson on the OpenAI "Sky" voice
What else does a famous actor have but a likeness? What if their likeness is appropriated to support a cause they disagree with, or a job they declined for moral or ethical reasons? The public will still associate them first and they will bear the consequences.
plasticchris··on I couldn't escape poison oak, so I started eating it
No, people know how it looks here. Usually it was full walls of the stuff.
plasticchris··on I couldn't escape poison oak, so I started eating it
I am almost forty now, never try to avoid it, still no problems. I even had a side gig going in high school removing it. But it is still only any anecdote.
plasticchris··on I couldn't escape poison oak, so I started eating it
As a child I used to romp through poison ivy and poison oak. It has never bothered me.
plasticchris··on RTK Experiments
There is a difference between accuracy and precision at play here, but modern gps is far more accurate than design intent.
plasticchris··on Transgenic Golden Rice, once hailed as a dietary breakthrough
Not everywhere, even in the USA. I know there are small family farms that got busted for growing gmo seeds so it is worthwhile for some. Maybe not the big players.
plasticchris··on Goodyear Inflatoplane
Feels like an opportunity to make a very cool ultralight given the weight savings, and no pilot license is needed (though still recommended…)
plasticchris··on We have 4 days to contest KYC being required by internet services
A point very eloquently made by Rick and Morty
plasticchris··on We have 4 days to contest KYC being required by internet services
Ironically enough, we’d already lost one by then: https://nationalinterest.org/blog/reboot/us-military-missing...
plasticchris··on Scientists say they have found evidence of an unknown planet in our solar system
It should be presented as this is what we think, there are some gaps we filled in here, and these gaps are usually where the next big advance comes from. No need to even use the word theory, just explain in simple words and people can get it.
plasticchris··on Scientists say they have found evidence of an unknown planet in our solar system
This, ether, and dark matter. The equations don’t agree with observations so we invent a thing we have not observed to explain it. I wish it would be explained like this in popular science, went to a planetarium and they presented dark matter as absolute fact.
plasticchris··on Brain waves appear to wash out waste during sleep in mice
All my odd dream/sleep experiences came as a teenager, got every one at least once, lucid dreams I had several times, also night terrors, and sleep paralysis. Nothing since then.
plasticchris··on Ask HN: Non-duopoly smart phone in Sweden?
That’s wild, but it seems like it would be difficult to argue that it does not impose an undue burden as is the standard, see https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/what-you-should-know-work...
