plasticchris··on The great abandonment: what happens to the natural world when people disappear?
I had a similar experience with wild bison - I’ve spent time around domesticated cattle and the wild ones seemed much more intelligent and aware. They would react as soon as you showed your silhouette on the ridge top.
plasticchris··on I'm a developer not a compiler
My favorites were from back when I would get them from product teams that had already had a good crack at them, with fixes like painting the device black, learning a new algorithm, modifying the os core, and so on. Didn’t always succeed but it was great fun. I once found a bug in golang, memorable but less fun as it got fixed right away after I reported it.
plasticchris··on The 'Return to Office' Lies
50k extra per year, to get it you need to spend only 100k-200k… per year…

It sometimes makes sense, when you are junior, need to form a network, and have low expenses. One can look at it as an investment. But not for the average engineer over the long term. It just doesn’t pencil out. Especially if you want a family.

plasticchris··on The 'Return to Office' Lies
Sure. But if you didn’t have to pay it (ie living there wasn’t a requirement)?
plasticchris··on The 'Return to Office' Lies
Absolutely this. A down payment in the valley is enough to buy outright in most of the USA.
plasticchris··on The 'Return to Office' Lies
Sf Bay Area can easily exceed 2 hours each way if you aren’t willing to pay insane money on housing. It honestly made me wonder how low income people exist there at all. I did more than 2 hours each way for many years there but only by riding the train with a hot spot.
plasticchris··on Treating bullying as everyone's problem reduces incidence in primary schools
The real problem is that school personnel don’t want to deal with the parents of the actual problem kids, so they get away with it even under zero tolerance.
plasticchris··on M4 Mac mini's efficiency
Be careful to check the support for larger ram on the motherboard as well as cpu - I’ve got an am5 setup with 128gb of ram but the it had to be down locked to even post.
plasticchris··on Who's a Good Boy? A Puppy Linux Mini-Review
I burned several Linux boot cds with some games on them and took over an unused computer lab at the community college for a lan party. It lasted until someone came around asking why these computers were running when their system showed them as off. Fortunately they laughed it off when they realized we were just kids.
plasticchris··on All Work and No Play (2021)
One of the great lessons of game design is that learning is fun.

So games that require thought are more engaging and fun. There is a threshold where it isn’t fun, but that’s different from person to person. Lots of people like the souls games, myself included.

Try asking yourself, what isn’t a grind in my favorite game? Chances are that requires thought.

Because the statement is meant to motivate the reader.
plasticchris··on Officer who ignored NYPD's 'courtesy cards' receives $175K settlement
California highway patrol had some license plate holders that would prevent them from pulling you over, but that took a hit some time back when counterfeits hit the market. CHP 11-99 club issued them.
plasticchris··on "Tinyboxes finally have a buy it now button"
I looked at the specs at the start of the year and just built something with the high end of consumer parts at around 4k usd. I was able to replicate the mlc 2x7900xtx results running some LLMs. Good enough to run most of the big models in gpu memory with a little quantization.
plasticchris··on Study: Air purifier use at daycare centres cut kids' sick days by a third (2023)
With my experience around poorer schools in the USA I would worry that the filter wouldn’t get replaced for decades and itself become a breeding ground for molds.
plasticchris··on Study: Air purifier use at daycare centres cut kids' sick days by a third (2023)
Yeah, even a single UV bulb in the cold air return might be effective. This is well known in hiking circles where UV is used to sanitize water.

I might hook one up now that I have the idea.

Depends on the direction you are going ;)
plasticchris··on NASA acknowledges it cannot quantify risk of Starliner propulsion issues
Proton? It has about 89 percent success, nowhere close to Falcon 9’s 99 percent success rate.

Mandatory car insurance is a thing in most of the us, except for New Hampshire and Virginia.
plasticchris··on All the possible ways to destroy Google's monopoly in search
Most people do not change the defaults, if they are aware of a choice at all.

plasticchris··on Hacked Tesla FSD computers disclose alarming raw data on deadly accidents
Yeah that’s what I meant. The fallacy being that people assume the cameras are as good as their eyes, especially when looking at footage shot through them without any basis for comparison.
plasticchris··on Hacked Tesla FSD computers disclose alarming raw data on deadly accidents
Yes, and in looking between the real scene and the display these errors are present in both.
plasticchris··on Hacked Tesla FSD computers disclose alarming raw data on deadly accidents
It’s very true of the current automotive cameras. Just put them on a good display and look between the screen and reality. Source: I have done that.
plasticchris··on Hacked Tesla FSD computers disclose alarming raw data on deadly accidents
Showing the camera footage from these vehicles (and the Uber ATG incident) causes a fallacy most people don’t even realize - eyes are way better than current cameras. So you think visibility was worse than it is, things were further away and approaching more quickly, and so on. So people are inclined to look at the video and say it was clear no one could avoid that. Which is just an inditement of the sensor tech but unless you see the scene yourself or have other sensor data, it’s not so obvious.
plasticchris··on In the Beginning Was the Command Line (1999)
Yes - people bought it to upgrade, as the step up from dos to 3.1 to win95 was huge.

plasticchris··on Intel says 13th and 14th Gen mobile CPUs are crashing
An issue with these parts was that the OOB config wasn’t very good - even if you knew to turn on the XMP profiles it still threw a ridiculous amount of voltage at the chip in pursuit of a few percent performance increase.
plasticchris··on Intel says 13th and 14th Gen mobile CPUs are crashing
I have a 3700x I keep around 1.05v and it is completely quiet (and p95 stable) under a massive air cooler which basically never spins up the fans.
plasticchris··on Trench collapses have killed hundreds of workers in the US over the last decade
Some thing that stuck with me early on in engineering school, there was an ethics seminar, and the instructor asked me what I would do if I were told to sign off on say some sort of waste dump into a residential area. The thing that stuck with me is he didn’t let me off the hook when I said I would say no he said OK so they fire you and now they sue you and what do you do now?
plasticchris··on Why Vivaldi won't follow the current AI trend?
Precisely the point, you cite the model and that’s it. Even when these models are known in some cases to reproduce training text directly.
