plasticchris··on Casey Muratori: I can always tell a good programmer in an interview
I’ve seen it fail, having tried it for a few years. There’s a type that passes this no problem but isn’t productive.

I switched to a battery of knowledge questions centered on the type of programmer I was looking for, it works much better and is even predictive of coding ability as it helps you learn this stuff.

The trouble is, there would also be no unsolved thought crimes
plasticchris··on Ireland is making basic income for artists program permanent
Not enough connections to the bureaucracy…
plasticchris··on Beliefs that are true for regular software but false when applied to AI
At least in the USA it’s legal to record public spaces. So recording the street and things that can be seen from it is legal, but pointing a camera over your neighbors fence is not.
plasticchris··on Aerocart cargo gliders
Traditional gliders also carry ballast for cross country flights, which increases their speed without negatively impacting their glide ratio.
plasticchris··on Scammed out of $130K via fake Google call, spoofed Google email and auth sync
In a way, but this was also on an incoming call, and the text came from yet another number, there were a lot of red flags despite being legitimate.
plasticchris··on Restrictions on house sharing by unrelated roommates
Everyone has a different peeve, and they all conflict. That’s why population density correlates with regulation.
plasticchris··on Scammed out of $130K via fake Google call, spoofed Google email and auth sync
Even better, once I had a financial institution tell me I needed to read them a one time code someone would text me. They were actually surprised I had a problem with it when it’s the scam playbook.

We have government subsidized insurance in the USA on coastal properties. The rest of us will pay for it.

plasticchris··on Vibe coding the MIT course catalog
Unless the meaning was CourseEEK
plasticchris··on [dead]
I had the same experience. The limiters come off when you go from a big company to a startup, and there are no longer any guard rails. It’s incredibly easy to let the feeling of accomplishment drive you to work more and more. It’s not sustainable, eventually you life will fall apart.

Seems like you would need a pretty hot part of a star to fuse helium into metal
plasticchris··on I extracted the safety filters from Apple Intelligence models
Which is a reflection of morality, of sorts.
plasticchris··on Radio pulses detected coming from ice in Antarctica
"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."
plasticchris··on Why we still can't stop plagiarism in undergraduate computer science (2018)
That is extreme, I don’t think I would accept installing a browser extension with full access for a job interview. It trips my scam detector too hard.

I guess if I wanted the job badly enough I’d spin up a vm for it.

plasticchris··on Why we still can't stop plagiarism in undergraduate computer science (2018)
Basically all the coding interview sites are exactly this: editor, compiler, tester, record and replay every keystroke.

Why hasn’t anyone used them for a CS class? No idea, maybe cost?

And I can’t help but think if they did people would find a way to make the cut and paste look like organic typing…

plasticchris··on Find Your People
Each time you have to make a decision, measure.
plasticchris··on The average college student today
Maybe they feel it is expected of them and aren’t really interested in the subject matter? I met an engineering student once who told me they hated it but their parents wouldn’t support them for their true passion (the arts). For some I think (given my experience at uni is 2 decades ago) they use it as an excuse to enjoy being young rather than do serious study.
plasticchris··on AI killed the tech interview. Now what?
Isn’t this basically triplebyte? I did their process and every company still wanted to do their leetcode interview after.
plasticchris··on Trick to find commands in the terminal quickly
You can search the history with ctrl-r and then type the search. To make it even better use fzf as well.

plasticchris··on Dust from car brakes more harmful than exhaust, study finds
Yeah, the pads lasted that long. It was a manual and I did engine break pretty often.
plasticchris··on California homeowners to fund half of high-risk insurer's $1B 'bailout'
The weren’t allowed to - not even the fair plan was charging sound actuarial rates. Cali put price controls on insurance, making this debacle inevitable.
plasticchris··on California homeowners to fund half of high-risk insurer's $1B 'bailout'
They never actually had that surplus, it was projected revenue. The projections were wrong - they extrapolated, then planned spending around that. Source: https://calmatters.org/commentary/2023/10/california-budget-...
plasticchris··on Burning in woman's legs turned out to be slug parasites migrating to her brain
Or by cooking it well done, which is why you sometimes still hear people say to be careful to cook pork thoroughly.
plasticchris··on Dust from car brakes more harmful than exhaust, study finds
I’ve only had to change them one time on any car newer than 1990, after ~200k miles/10 years of use. For most people that qualifies as life of the vehicle, but there was plenty of life left.
plasticchris··on Burning in woman's legs turned out to be slug parasites migrating to her brain
Part of the lifecycle needs dirt. And hogs in the USA are all raised on concrete, so it is basically nonexistent in pork here.
plasticchris··on Ask HN: Former employees' RSUs at risk after startup's IPO
The only time I’ve ever heard of it was as an option for people who wanted to keep all the shares and avoid the sell to cover.
plasticchris··on A drill bit that can also drive screws
Phillips is still prevalent in drywall screws due to the low torque required. But you don’t need pilot holes for drywall screws.
