plastic3169··on Learning another language may be one of the best ways to keep your brain healthy
Learning another language is difficult, but never occured to me to think it would be somehow impossible to anyone. It might be that having english as your native language puts you in a uniquely difficult position as it is the default international language. World is getting smaller and people coming from smaller languages usually also learn the local international language as well. If you are born to family speaking estonian today you probably pick up also english or otherwise you spend your life surfing only estonian websites. It requires no special talent (although some people are fast at picking up new languages)

plastic3169··on To become a better writer, read as much as you can
Good point, I hung too much on the headline. I guess there is disconnect between how film has been thought and how it should be taught now. Traditionally it has been building on top of the previous waves and often the avantgarde have beem the big cinefiles drawing from history (someone like Martin Scorsese, who is now deeply in the history himself). But times change and simlar to knowing how computers operated in the 70s is not that relevant anymore as we now work on top of huge stack of layers maybe art students should also look more forward and not spend time with slow films.
plastic3169··on The Golden Rule for Becoming a Better Writer
It’s the same phenomenon, but I got similar strnge feeling when reading an article from the atlantic about film students who are incapable of sitting through films[0]. Why would you study to make art in a form you don’t even enjoy yourself?

plastic3169··on Being ambitious and being a dad
I used to think that it was hard to make the decision to have kids, but somehow now it feels harder to make the decision to not have them. I am at the age that people around me have kids ranging from new borns to young adults (and somebody is always pregnant). Having kids is totally normalized. I socialize a lot in childrens parties. Kids schedules determine what we can do with friends most of the time. I am often the babysitter and take care of other peoples children.

When I was growing up I thought everyone had kids (I guess I only socialized with families with kids). This was my future. As a young adult making the jump to having kids seemed like a big decision, but with hindsight that looks like following the default path. Now that there is growing amount of people like me with no kids I am wondering what life should look like. I lack the rolemodels.

I have witnessed my friends grow a lot in short time period when they have a kid. At first it’s a bit jarring how baby takes over their life. I think it is super cool and all of them say that it is an unique experience they can’t really explain.

By the time kid hits maybe 10 years old they have adjusted and interaction with them is pretty normal again from my perspective.

At the same time I feel I have also grown at my own pace. I don’t feel totally out of sync with my grown up parent friends although I must say I can be bit more lighthearted and experimental with my life. The stakes are low. It is not like I think life is about career or hedonistic pursuits anymore. I don’t want to live the life of a 30 year old. I value being part of society, socially present and giving. Enjoying simple things and seeing beauty in the world.

In a way my life looks like that of an empty nester, but without the prospect of seeing my child building a life for themselves, having grand children etc. Feels like a big decision I have done for my future self.

> I mean I can be told it but I cant understand why you would waste millions on real works just to have fake ones, why not just go all fake? If its a half way house then does no one care what is real?

I work with VFX and try to always have something real in the shot. Explosions and the like are easier to expand but quite difficult to just add to empty shot. Fireworks are a bit easier but there is interplay with the environment which is hard to fake.

All these films where they announce ”we did it for real with practical effects” usually mean that it’s a mix and match between practical and computer generated effects. It can look better than either on their own.

Also I guess they had audience there so you need something for them as well.

plastic3169··on Why do we assume everyone should be working?
There is also the category of people who have enough capital to not to work. This group of people have detached their activity from their income. They can be very active or lazy and it does not make a big difference. You are working to pay their dividends.
plastic3169··on Seedance 2.5
Often in making art you need to love the process. Otherwise you’ll never get good enough. Most filmmakers don’t even watch their films after they have spent years with it discussing, planning, shooting, editing etc. There is lots of travelling, new friendships, comradery involved and in a way it becomes the whole scaffolding of your life. Replacing this with prompting is probably not interesting to this particular group of people, but might be appealing to completely new set of people.

There are people who love coding and really dislike vibecoding, but atleast coding and prompting are the same mode of activity (typing in to a computer) so you don’t have to change your whole life to move from one to another.

> Since I am well aware how my mind fills in gaps in the visual field with attempts to map what I would expect or want to see

Your mind also creates the visual field. It is not real even though it is usually quite consistent. Brain fills the gaps after it has filled all the rest.

Just a handy visualization of a world that is likely to be a lot more chaotic.

plastic3169··on OpenCode – Open source AI coding agent
Yes cli and tui are not the same, but I expect TUI to work decent in general terminal emulator and not acitvely block copying and pasting. Having to install supported terminal emulator goes against the vibe.
plastic3169··on OpenCode – Open source AI coding agent
I’ve been testing opencode and it feels TUI in appearance only. I prefer commandline and TUIs and in my mind TUI idea is to be low level, extremely portable interface and to get out of the way. Opencode does not have low color, standard terminal theme so had to switch to a proper terminal program. Copy paste is hijacked so I need to write code out to file in order to get a snippet. The enter key (as in the return by the keypad) does not work for sending a line. I have not tested but don’t think this would work over SSH even. I have been googling around to find if I am holding it wrong but it feels to break expectations of a terminal app in a way that I wish they would have made it a gui. Makes me sad because I think the goods are there and it’s otherwise good.
plastic3169··on It Took Me 30 Years to Solve This VFX Problem – Green Screen Problem [video]
Yes and it was a massive manual effort. In a way they acknowledged that keying does not really work all the way and having that unnatural color everywhere in the set is not worth it. It’s a massive production with heavy VFX work so not something you can apply to your own production. Sand screen and roto sections of this discussion are interesting.

plastic3169··on Learnings from 4 months of Image-Video VAE experiments
Great work! I have been wondering what would it take to train with higher image bit depth (10 or 12b) and/or using camera footage only, not already heavily processed images? The usefulness of video generation in most professional use cases is limited because models are too end to end and completely contaminated with stock footage. Maybe quantities of training material needed is simply not there?

Not blaming you, but asking as I don’t usually have access to professionals working with video training.

plastic3169··on Ask HN: Do you have any evidence that agentic coding works?
I have started to use it to write small throwaway things. Like write a standalone debug shader that can display all this state on top of this image in real time. Not in a million years would I had spent time to mess with fonts in a shading language or bring in immediate gui framework or such. Codex could oneshot that kind of thing and the blast radius is one file that is not part of the project. Or write a separate python program that implements this core logic and double check my thinking. I am not a professional programmer though.

Great game, I returned back to play next day.

> I don’t think the gates should animate up into the air. It breaks the visual logic of 2D for no benefit.

I also feel it would make more sense either for everything to be 2.5D or pure top down. Having appear / disappear animation is nice feedback to user though.

Other thing is that maybe the hitbox should change when the wall comes up. Now to remove it you need to press the grid, essentially the root of the wall. Unintuitive to me.

Thanks for the game, looking forward to when there is multiple horses or sheep to enclose.

> The reason nukes have been good is because it makes it clear that war is unwinnable which effectively ended direct conflict between world powers. Yet of course proxy wars are alive and well with Ukraine being the king of them all.

Not looking forward to being your proxywar or small regional conflict. It’s amazingly frustrating to be dragged into this without any provocation or possibility to actually affect the situation. Just unfortunate geography I guess.

I don’t think nukes stopped the direct conflict between world powers. They made it possible for the first time. There is no reach to US without them.

War in Europe or parts of Asia is easy the old fashioned way and seems to happen on a regular basis.

plastic3169··on Americans no longer see four-year college degrees as worth the cost
It counts as an attack, but how close was US to actually being taken over? Usually when you fight a war the real risk is that you cease to exist as a country. I know nothing about war strategy, but seems to me US is in a great position as long as you get along with Canada and Mexico.
plastic3169··on Americans no longer see four-year college degrees as worth the cost
Could China attack US? Why would US try to attack China in asia? Not an expert but that feels like losing proposition. I think people confuse proxy wars with wars. US is under no threat of being actually attacked.

plastic3169··on AI's Dial-Up Era
> Even in the dot-com era, the early internet was already changing media and commerce in fundamental ways.

I agree that AI is overhyped but so was the early web. It was projected to do a lot of things ”soon”, but was not really doing that much 4 years in. I don’t think the newspapers or commerce were really worried about it. The transformation of the business landscape took hold after the crash.

People actually curate the profile and copywrite the text. It’s not real authentic life documented by accident. Once you put your profile there for others to judge you soon figure out that it needs to be manufactured. That’s when you start asking for others to snap a photo while your out doing the thing you maybe wouldn’t even do if it was not for the show.

plastic3169··on Smartphones manipulate our emotions and trigger our reflexes
I recommend the book and the new research. It reflects on the rat park study and makes what I think are good arguments that addiction is not a simple thing we can fix only by fixing the enviroment even though it is part of it. OP was asking for evidence so I thought I’d chip in with a modern source. There are no socities that have solved addiction. Obviously it is a gnarly problem.
plastic3169··on Smartphones manipulate our emotions and trigger our reflexes
That’s a good goal and I think we should aim for that regardless if it fixes addiction. I would not call it easy though. And would it be world without addicts? There are plenty of well connected rich social happy folks who can’t handle simple molecules. Environment is part of the usage pattern but it’s not the only thing. That’s the books point I gather.
