I’ve heard that ex-military make the best cops because they are used to dangerous situations without panicking. I fully support this because they know that they aren’t GI Joe.

For me it was worth it. I immediately went into programming, and taught myself everything. While being useless for programming, my EE degree gave me a foot in the door and I made the most of it. I started in a bank in IT but was able to move into programming by lying and saying I was a full time programmer. I was doing programming on my own at home so I could legit program (they didn’t have interviews like Microsoft or Google back when I was starting off).
Soon after I moved to Silicon Valley and it’s been pretty good ever since. I’m mostly retired now after 25 years and the pandemic was the thing that convinced me into retirement.
I shudder to imagine what they would think about paying hundreds of thousands for a US education...
I think you are misremembering. Obama was actively against gay marriage and defended his views against gay marriage through the 2012 election. I think Biden was the one to first broach the topic in 2014 with his active support for it.
The sad thing is that this works.
However, I disagree with getting rid of biological sex. It’s absurd. Even down to the genetic level there is a biological definition of male and female and to say there isn’t is anti-science. We shouldn’t destroy science over this.
Because of that I also don’t believe that trans women should be allowed to compete in competitive sports especially those that have dedicated their lives towards it. To put it in perspective, Serena Williams, one of the greatest if not the greatest tennis athlete of all time. She and Venus Williams were destroyed in her prime by the 200th ranked tennis player. The male tennis player felt like they were equivalent to a 600th ranked male player. The point being, you can’t make up for some genetic differences between men and women.
This is well documented behavior, even in Jack Welch’s book. He was the one famous for cutting 5% every year at GE.
So HR and leadership believe that their system “works” but it’s really that their employees are willing to put up with straight up torture. They are deluded into thinking that their metrics and PIP plan work well because their best employees are staying but it’s really just the stock price.
If the stock price starts to drop for whatever reason. All the best employees will leave in droves. That’s what I saw at Uber post IPO.
I have so many friends that have regretted going into startups because they have missed out on literally millions.
If you don’t have a house right now, do not go into a startup because the ones in big companies will earn more money than you and you will effectively take a break in making money for years.
Of course you might work at the next Uber, but chances are 10 to 1 that you will instead work at the next Juicero. The 5 years you dedicate to that job will see no money but the stock market will rise and you won’t see any of that so your peers will get richer and richer.
So if you have a house and enough money to keep your lifestyle no matter what, then sure. Go for it. If you don’t, then wait until you have enough. Or if you don’t care about money and are okay with things like housing being completely out of reach then that’s okay too.
The same goes for this reported brain issue. If it is a real issue, comparing against other known issues will tell us how dangerous it is.
And did they do the same study against people who got the flu and other diseases?
But asking what the author would gain from fabricating it is a terrible reason to believe something. Pathological liars exist and they prey on people with such low bars for belief.
TTL on systems like Cassandra is pretty ugly and deleting data is hard as you scale no matter how you do it. I don’t think Postgres would be able to implement a TTL that is magically better than the rest.
You must have been beaten down by your parents over the last several decades and it has rubbed into you. I get it. Back in the 70s when I grew up, it was worse because they could legit beat me with a belt if they wanted and it was socially acceptable.
You need to understand that you are doing great. You have a job at Amazon that will help you get jobs for the rest of your career. The Amazon name pops on a resume. Stop worrying about others that got into Google or Facebook or Jane Street. All you are doing is reinforcing a circle of self hate. Fuck it.
I failed getting into Google 5 times. I failed getting into Facebook 3 times. I flunked at Amazon twice. Fuck, I haven’t gotten into any FAANG at all. That doesn’t measure your self worth. Who the fuck cares. I think you are probably jealous at all those that got in but stop thinking about it. You can forge your own path and be extremely successful without ever working at a FAANG. I worked at Uber but besides that it was all two-bit startups and shitty companies. and I did okay but you will probably make more from Amazon than I ever did at Uber. But I really made the most money in real estate. I’m semi-retired at this point because of that.
There’s nothing more important in life than being happy. Stop worrying about money. Worry about being happy. Go spend money on shit that makes you happy every now and then. Take vacations. Get a girlfriend and go traveling. Stop worrying about money and worry about proficiency. If you are programming because you think it will bring you money and not because you love it, then your life will be miserable.
Let go of the trauma that your upbringing brought you. It’s toxic and you are suffering for it. I get it. My parents wanted me to be a doctor and when push came to shove I told them no. They were furious for years but I never felt so free in my life. I stopped caring about them and what they said and just moved on.
You’re still young. Don’t waste your life stewing over others that got into better schools or better companies. Take what you have now and leverage it as you move up the ladder. Make smart decisions for your career based on what interests you, not just because of FANG or money. If you are happy and are progressing, money will coke and it will be on your own terms, not your parents and not from killing yourself while working at Jane Street like a slave.
If you are dedicated to education, there is plenty of opportunity to succeed. It’s sad that some bloodlines don’t make it out of poverty easily, but that’s just how the world works. For those that make the effort, it’s very available.
There’s plenty of turnover in California on par with other states. If prop 13 were somehow so powerful a factor not to sell, you would see a lot less house sales which you don’t.
In my city, half the houses were sold in the last 20 years which sounds pretty good to me. The idea that property taxes are frozen to 30 years ago and governments are starving for money is fiction.
In places like Toronto where property taxes get assessed every year, the property taxes 1/3 for an equivalent house price.
What stops people from selling their homes isn’t prop 13, it’s the ridiculous rise in house prices in the last 15 years. It creates no mobility. Stop bitching about Prop 13, that is a lazy and short sighted and wrong explanation for house prices. Look at the inventory these days. It’s low because no one wants to sell their homes because where are they going to move to?
