pkthunder··on Why media fans want to escape algorithms with CDs, DVDs and vinyl
Really like the idea of RFID cards - I was brainstorming something like that years ago for the kid, but never chased it down.

(Un??)fortunately, I am usually the one slinging CDs for people to listen to, people just like being able to offload that and listen to curated music, vs. "throw on spotify whatever" and having it just _play_.

pkthunder··on Why media fans want to escape algorithms with CDs, DVDs and vinyl
Definitely did it sequentially with a single CD drive. I'm sitting on maybe 100 albums, max. It takes ~15min per album to process, which pulls in song metadata, lyrics (synced, if possible), album art, etc.

Local used CD store sells albums for 7USD - could even get two a month and put money away on months you don’t want to buy anything.

Yep - I’ve noticed I’ve stopped “having music playing” and I’ve more started “listening to the music” if that makes sense.

Also just fun to be a plain-old jockey when you have company over, rather than just let “Appotifydal Top 3”

Really wasn’t a knock on NB - don’t worry hehe. I’m at least glad it gave me what I expected. I listen to a good amount of stuff like Aesop Rock and you tend to just get a bunch of his own stuff back, generally.

Took a quick look at Noiseblend, seems nice! Will play around a bit more with it when I’m actually at a computer, but I find that I end up getting into a downward spiral of recommendations (not from yours - just in general) that reinforces what I listen to, versus expanding based on what I listen to.

I listen to a good amount of underground hip hop/backpack rap kind of stuff and I find that so many recommendation systems just recommend what I already listen to.

Oddly enough, I randomly asked Claude one day and got three novel album recommendations that no other service really gave me

Love love love to see this, thank you for making my day!

Would love to hear more about the mixtape labels.
pkthunder··on Why media fans want to escape algorithms with CDs, DVDs and vinyl
Love it, but honestly I’m trying to decouple from services like this.

Although, it’s not a critical-path item..

I’d love to. I’m working off memory right now, but it’s nothing fancy.

I’ve got abcde[0] set up to handle the digitizing, navidrome[1] is set up to serve the content from a home lab server/NAS over Subsonic[2].

Play:Sub[3] is an iOS application that works with Subsonic. Just an audio receiver at this point, the app lets me “just play something” which is quite nice. Can “play a random album” for example.

Tailscale just enables this off-LAN.

Happy to give more info if you need!

I have a home audio setup to play them on, don’t worry :).

Also, buying directly from artists (when you can) is a good way to support them.

pkthunder··on Why media fans want to escape algorithms with CDs, DVDs and vinyl
I’ve been going through my own personal revival of physical media - mostly audio. I don’t miss streaming at all.

Every CD I buy gets ripped to a NAS that hosts the music behind Navidrone where I can stream to my vehicle using Play:Sub (thanks to Tailscale for enabling all of this to work for me!).

I am just so enamored with being able to get the best of both worlds - my own music, anywhere.

I do wish I could figure out some sort of recommendation system to find new magic, though. Obviously not to steam new/unowned songs, just to point me in a direction next time I go to the store.

pkthunder··on Pi 1.0
Thanks - I think I more need to work on the prompting.. possibly. IIRC I was struggling with local operations as basic as finding files/reading files/correlating classes in the same folder.
pkthunder··on Pi 1.0
Love it - thanks. I basically dropped into Pi, tried prompting a simple prompt (e.g. "What's the name of this project?") and realized how little it did OOTB. I know oh-my-pi exists, but I'm trying to reduce complexity for local model runs.
pkthunder··on Pi 1.0
I'd _love_ to get some feedback on how people use Pi after initial setup. I (like others) am pretty heavily "invested" in Claude Code CLI. After trying out Pi and a local model, I realized how MUCH the `claude` CLI was lifting. I'd like to strip a lot of the fluff out and build my own, but it feels like I need to see what other people are doing too.
pkthunder··on StreetComplete on iOS is now in public beta
I'm trying to get off of Apple Maps and into OSM (using Magic Earth as my navigation app) - seeing more OSM work is exciting.

Now I need to figure out if it's possible to merge my navigation maps with the deflock maps..

pkthunder··on The smart home graveyard is getting crowded
I was (naively, looking back) pretty bullish on smart home devices. Automating schedules, presence detection, etc. Every time I looked to invest more into it, the marketplace felt like a minefield of e(ventual)-waste and headache.

I still struggle with it. It feels like a missed opportunity these days, but I just don’t trust companies to treat me or my devices with respect. I’ve ultimately boomeranged back to “no (cloud) smart devices.”

pkthunder··on I Posed as a Problem Gambler. DraftKings Made Me a VIP
Alcohol is S I G N I F I C A N T L Y more regulated than DraftKings - what are you even trying to say? Last I checked (US), you can bet on prediction markets and sports (18+ according to DraftKings) years before you can drink alcohol.
pkthunder··on I Posed as a Problem Gambler. DraftKings Made Me a VIP
It’s pretty commonly accepted that gambling is an addiction, the OP’s comment comes off as dismissive (people being gullible).

We don’t talk about alcoholics being gullible - why gamblers? It’s pretty clear how unregulated the industry is, especially in the current climate.

More like the people drinking the water are being told about the eventual pooping, ask for it anyway, then drink with a scowl.

Nothing in the post you are referencing came off as antisemitism. Please do not conflate the arming of a militaristic apartheid regime with criticism of blank checkbook legislating.
pkthunder··on Jabber/XMPP: How Do We Gain Traction?
Yeah, I explicitly wanted it as a non-public facing server and really just gave up.
pkthunder··on One Gets Through – Missile Command, but you launch the missiles
You’re aiming to do the destruction this time, rather than saving civilization.
pkthunder··on Jabber/XMPP: How Do We Gain Traction?
Just a self-hosted Zulip instance for family members, exposed externally via Tailscale. I wanted to try Mongoose and Snikket (possibly Prosody as well, but can't recall), but I guess my infrastructure didn't want to line up directly with what they want for a quick start. shrug
pkthunder··on Jabber/XMPP: How Do We Gain Traction?
I think the article brushes over something that adds (IMO) a ton of friction to Jabber/XMPP: self-hosting your own server. About 6 months ago, I tried to go down the awesome selfhosted XMPP servers list and it was just so painful I ended up finding an alternative stack.
