I used to code for fun. Then I used to be a high-stakes patent litigator. But I hated that, so now I am an engineer. And I still code for fun.

Helpful for beginners but not entirely clear what this is rethinking! These are widely known promise fundamentals since all settled became widely available in 2019ish and omits for ... await loops despite that being THE async loop primative (and what I thought this would be about reading the title).
pkilgore··on Carefully Educated to Be Idiots
I think I became dumber by reading this.
pkilgore··on TurboTax’s 20-year fight to stop Americans from filing taxes for free (2019)
Politicians cannot write loopholes that benefits only their doners if the tax code and tax filing is simple. Period.

Take corporate/dark/unlimited money out of politics and watch this problem (and many other) disappear.

pkilgore··on TurboTax’s 20-year fight to stop Americans from filing taxes for free (2019)
Did you not read the article, at all?
pkilgore··on No science, no startups: The innovation engine we're switching off
"Venture funding is the engine of economic innovation" is a tacit admission we have a planned economy.
pkilgore··on Email immutability matters more in a world with AI
Kagi & Fastmail are two of my favorite bills to pay.
pkilgore··on Everything that's wrong with Google Search in one image
Kagi. Worth every penny. Become the customer and it all gets better.
pkilgore··on Zed's Pricing Has Changed: LLM Usage Is Now Token-Based
This is very very exciting.
pkilgore··on Zed's Pricing Has Changed: LLM Usage Is Now Token-Based
This is much better for me but I really want a plan that includes zero AI other than edit prediction and BYOK for the rest.

But as a mostly claude max + zed user happy to see my costs go down.

pkilgore··on AI was supposed to help juniors shine. Why does it mostly make seniors stronger?
You aren't wrong in the coaching but, but feedback loops are orders of magnitude faster.

It takes an LLM 2-20 minutes to give me the next stage of output not 1-2 days (week?). As a result, I have higher context the entire time so my side of the iteration is maybe 10x faster too.

pkilgore··on Man jailed for parole violations after refusing to decrypt his Tor node
The problem with the CFAA is that it is so (IMO unconstitutionally) broad it is feasible that _every American_ has arguably violated it in some way, completely accidentally.

Thus, every time we see a CFAA charge we have to ask ourselves: "Is this an abuse of power?".

We should have better, clearer laws.

pkilgore··on Removing newlines in FASTA file increases ZSTD compression ratio by 10x
To me the most interesting thing here isn't that you can compress something better by removing randomly-distributed semantically-meaningless information. It's why zstd --long does so much better than gzip when you do and the default does worse than gzip.

What lessons can we take from this?

pkilgore··on US lawmakers introduce bill to strip citizens of passports over Israel criticism
We don't even get that anymore. We get an unexplained shadow docket opinion overturning lower courts.
pkilgore··on You don't want to hire "the best engineers"
> You're acting like a replacement-level employer and expecting more than replacement-level candidates.

There are probably a lot of people who need to hear this.

pkilgore··on Memory is slow, Disk is fast – Part 1
This was largely a waste of time to read. It doesn't really support its own point or honestly even make a point or provide anything actionable. I'm not even sure I can trust the numbers given it's been vibes-researched.
pkilgore··on MAID in Canada
The vast majority of MAID provisions (95.9%; n=14,721) were for individuals in Track 1; 4.1% (n=622) of MAID provisions were for individuals in Track 2. (See Section 2) [1]

pkilgore··on MAID in Canada
If you've ever seen someone die slowly in hospice or in hospital having spent the last 5-10 years in misery, of a chronic diseases with cures beyond our ken, you question will be....

only 5%?

pkilgore··on MAID in Canada
More than zero and enough to demonstrate it's a systemic problem, say > 5%?
pkilgore··on Web apps in a single, portable, self-updating, vanilla HTML file
So you need a server for this to work and that server is closed source?
pkilgore··on I tried every todo app and ended up with a .txt file
me, too, then https://godspeedapp.com/, and it finally stuck.

Still very sad about no Android, but it's good enough from my computers that I've managed to work around it with a few cloudflare-worker based mobile affordances.

pkilgore··on Emailing a one-time code is worse than passwords
You are.

There is no password in these new flows. They just ask for email or phone and send you a code.

Bad website only needs to ask for an email. It logs into Good with a bot using that email. Good sends you the code. You put the code in bad. Bad finishes the login with that code.

At no point in time is a password involved in these new flows. It's all email/txt + code.

Many sites work like this now. Resy comes to mind.

pkilgore··on Emailing a one-time code is worse than passwords
There is no password. That's the point.

It's just an email, and a six digit code they text you.

pkilgore··on Perplexity is using stealth, undeclared crawlers to evade no-crawl directives
Then we're all operating with very different definitions of legitimate or benign!

I've only ever seen a Cloudflare interstitial when viewing a page with my VPN on, for example -- something I'm happy about as a site owner and accept quite willingly as a VPN user knowing the kinds of abuse that occur over VPN.

pkilgore··on Perplexity is using stealth, undeclared crawlers to evade no-crawl directives
Cloudflare literally publishes documentation pages and prompts for the single purpose of enabling better AI usage of their products and services [1,2]

They offer many products for the sole purpose of enabling their customers to use AI as a part of their product offers, as even the most cursory inquiry would have uncovered.

We're out here critiquing shit based on vibes vs. reality now.

pkilgore··on Perplexity is using stealth, undeclared crawlers to evade no-crawl directives
> This is funny coming from Cloudflare, the company that blocks most of the internet from being fetched with antispam checks even for a single web request.

Am I misunderstanding something. I (the site owner) pay Cloudflare to do this. It is my fault this happens, not Cloudflare's.

pkilgore··on Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: WebAssembly SDK
Personally I play a lot of 2020 not because I even care much about perfect flying physics, which I can get over and will never feel like actually flying which happens a lot by feel particularly in vfr. But rather, as extremely cheap avionics and prodecures practice, which 2020 does a mostly good job of if you pretend to be your own controller or use vatsim.

I also have a mod that gets my plane's power curve mostly right which is good enough for most IFR practice.

pkilgore··on Wikimedia Foundation Challenges UK Online Safety Act Regulations
Weird, here I am being completely consistent that both sets of laws are completely fucked and both countries are hell holes of authoritarianism.

I'll fret about both, thank you very much.

pkilgore··on Google's shortened goo.gl links will stop working next month
Google probably spends more money a month than what it would take to preserve this service on coffee creamer for a single conference room.
pkilgore··on Why Are We Pretending AI Is Going to Take All the Jobs?
Lotta folks here (not you) didn't read the article, which is making the point that concentrated market power is taking the jobs using AI as an excuse or tool to deliver inferior and services to customers without effective substitutes.

In other words, it's a political problem, not an AI problem.
