pjot··on Using Goatse to Stop App Theft
OP is merely gripping onto the Old Internet
pjot··on Southern Gumbo Trail (2006)
Hotty Toddy!
pjot··on BB(3, 3) is Hard
Got it. Thanks for adding context!
pjot··on BB(3, 3) is Hard
So is this (BB) then just an exercise demonstrating our inability to reasonably solve the problem? I suppose what I’m asking is what is its significance? Or why does this matter? As a self taught programmer, I realize I have definite gaps in the more theoretical realms of computer science.
pjot··on Recursive Recipes
That's why I wanna try fried beans, because maybe they're just as good.
pjot··on Fake recruiter lured aerospace employee with trojanized coding challenge
Just as a matter of CYA, use a phone/tablet for interviews if you must. Why add the unnecessary risk?

Maybe people like the rush…

pjot··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
I have an American Airlines flight in a few hours. Looking forward to see what kind of data I can find now
pjot··on Why are you better at recognizing upright faces?
> it is revealing that he does not do better with upright faces than inverted faces for face detection and face identity matching," Duchaine said.

> "The absence of an advantage for the face orientation that he's had more experience with suggests that our great sensitivity to upright faces results from both our greater experience with them and an evolved component that makes our visual system better tuned to upright faces than inverted faces."

This seems contradictory, or otherwise confusing from which perspective the orientation is being measured from.

pjot··on Harlequin: DuckDB IDE for the terminal
This looks great! I’ve been using Motherduck for a while now, glad to see more things being built with it in mind.
pjot··on Queueing Theory: An introduction for software development
Eh, not necessarily. Queuing is a function of throughput, which by definition takes processing time into account.

Queue length = arrival rate * processing time
Transitive properties allow you to solve for one variable, given you have the other two. This is known as Little’s Law[0].

With this, you can now deduce/estimate how long a ticket will be in the backlog, how fast you need to complete a task, how long until everything is finished.

pjot··on CatalaLang/catala: Programming language for law specification
> They are contracts—just not legal contracts

I think this proves op’s point of goofy confusion for what things are.

pjot··on Insiders reveal problems at Upside Foods
Does meat actually taste good though? When has anyone ordered unseasoned chicken?

Salt and spices taste good.

pjot··on The MacBook Air M2 is so good it's given Apple a problem
Is the keyboard/trackpad on 16” not the same size as on the 13”?
pjot··on Diamond prices are in free fall in one key corner of the market
When the Apple App Store first came out there was an app called “I am rich” that cost $1000.

It’s only functionality was a button that when pressed displayed the text, “I am rich!”

pjot··on Klack – Satisfying sound with every keystroke
Perhaps we should include tipping?

Higher tips enables new features.

Say you want keys that sound like lasers…well that’s a 25% tip!

pjot··on How to type “blimpy” in Emacs [video]
I’ve never seen a Unimog reference in the wild before!

What an amazing machine.

pjot··on Giving up the iPad-only travel dream
An iPad with (any) Bluetooth keyboard and mouse along with codespaces (or replit, gitpod, et al) works well. As long as you accept that what you’re using isn’t a full blown computer, it’s absolutely enough. All about managing expectations.
pjot··on Common mistakes in salary negotiation
> Don't give a number at all

Can you give an example of how this plays out in real conversation? Answering “I’m not telling you” or similar to the recruiters question “what’s your expected compensation” seems like bogus advice

pjot··on When I have a slower publishing cadence my blog grows faster
I agree.

Great > really good

pjot··on Ask HN: Screen recording software with real-time zooming?
Often these tools live somewhere under Accessibility settings - at least for macOS that is.
pjot··on PRQL: Pipelined Relational Query Language
At least we can all agree on leading commas though!
pjot··on Python: Overlooked core functionalities
This is very important for self-recursion.
