Linux Desktop feeling extra good today, my sound often doesn't work but I don't have to deal with Microsoft nonsense.
pjfin123··on Julian Assange can be extradited to the US, court rules
The only difference between what Assange did and what "legitimate" journalists do is to publish embarrassing truths about those in power instead of uncritically publishing what the national security apparatus intentionally leaks.

pjfin123··on Ask HN: What are the early signs of singularity?
It's an exponential curve, from the perspective of people 100,000 years ago we already are. When computers start 10x-ing every month then the days of the world operating on human timescales is probably ending.
pjfin123··on How to scrape and extract hyperlink networks with BeautifulSoup and NetworkX
I wrote a similar Python library to do Beautiful Soup scraping with basic PageRank and a Flask web app: https://github.com/argosopentech/argos-search
pjfin123··on Easylang – An easy online programming language and development environment
What do you think the the future of learning to program is? Something like this or repl.it for beginners to not have to understand the environment?

Your desktop apps are sandboxed and can't, for example, read all of the files in your home directory.

pjfin123··on Alphafold
Nevermind

> The simplest way to run AlphaFold is using the provided Docker script. This was tested on Google Cloud with a machine using the nvidia-gpu-cloud-image with 12 vCPUs, 85 GB of RAM, a 100 GB boot disk, the databases on an additional 3 TB disk, and an A100 GPU.

pjfin123··on Alphafold
I'm assuming you can't run this on any consumer computer?
pjfin123··on How many real numbers exist? New proof moves closer to an answer
I understand the diagnol proof but not a lot of the rest. If you assume only computable numbers exist though a lot of this seems to really not matter.
pjfin123··on All public GitHub code was used in training Copilot
Of all the concerns over training large AI models incidental copyright infringement doesn't seem that important.
pjfin123··on All public GitHub code was used in training Copilot
Of all the potential issues with training large AI models incidental copyright infringement seems pretty mild.
pjfin123··on GitHub Copilot as open source code laundering?
Why would you want to? For many open source developers having models trained on your code would be desirable.
pjfin123··on GitHub Copilot as open source code laundering?
I think this would fall under any reasonable definition of fair use. If I read GPL (or proprietary) code as a human I still own code that I later write. If copyright was enforced on the outputs of machine learning models based on all content they were trained on it would be incredibly stifling to innovation. Requiring obtaining legal access to data for training but full ownership of output seems like a sensible middle ground.

pjfin123··on How to Work Hard
I'm sorry to here about some of your bad luck and run ins with office politics.

My reading of the Essay was that hard work was necessary for great success not sufficient, which would be a very different claim.

pjfin123··on GitHub Copilot
Clearly this requires some level of judgement but this isn't new, determining what is plagiarism and not requires a similar judgement call.
pjfin123··on GitHub Copilot
Then the person training the models wouldn't be legally accessing your code.

pjfin123··on How to Work Hard
With a $100,000 salary, $50,000 expenses, 30% tax rate, and 5% real returns you could put away $20,000 a year and have a million (2021) dollars in 26 years.

Hardly easy but not out of the realm of possibility for a persistent and highly paid software developer.

pjfin123··on Peter Thiel turned a Roth IRA into a $5B tax-free piggy bank
How has all this information form the IRS leaked? ProPublica seems to have accessed many of the richest American's tax data. Is this something one person could do? How many people have that kind of access?
