pjfin123··on Helene Should Trigger a National Rethink of Home Insurance
> Hurricane Helene crashed into an insurance sector facing a series of potentially existential questions, and a policy landscape in which the United States has left key decisions about how communities prepare for and recover from disasters in the hands of companies that exist to turn a profit—not provide protection. “Right now, we’re essentially leaving all of these decisions about land use and where risk mitigation happens up to insurance companies,” says Moira Birss, a longtime organizer and fellow at the Climate & Community Institute.

Insurance companies are probably the entity best incentivized and infotmed to make decisions about where to build houses and what risk mitigation to do.

pjfin123··on US man, 81, sentenced to six months for creating giant hybrid sheep for hunting
> The US district court judge Brian Morris said […] deter anyone else from trying to “change the genetic makeup of the creatures”.

Why does this judge feel entitled to be the arbiter of the genetic makeup of creatures on Earth?

> They are protected under international convention as a threatened species and outlawed for import into Montana to protect native sheep from disease and hybridization.

These are reasonable concerns, you generally shouldn't move plants or animals across international (or U.S. state) boundaries, but the if the species is threatened then wouldn't people breeding more of them be a good thing? This seems like a weird case where I think it's illegal under the Lacey Act because they're endangered but by importing them he's making them less endangered.

This article seems outraged about this calling it an "audacious scheme" (as opposed to a technicality) while Humans have been breeding sheep for size and other characteristics for thousands of years.

pjfin123··on Who is Marcellus Williams: Execution in Missouri despite evidence of innocence
> When speaking with law enforcement, the jailhouse informant provided information about the crime that was not publicly available, yet consistent with crime scene evidence and Williams’ involvement.

This is hard to fake and seems like pretty compelling evidence that the informant is telling the truth.

pjfin123··on Llama 3.2: Revolutionizing edge AI and vision with open, customizable models
Meta has been good about releasing their NLO work open source for a long time. Most of the open source datasets for foreign language translation were created by Facebook.
pjfin123··on 'Stop ripping us off': Senate grills Novo Nordisk CEO on Ozempic drug pricing
> In a release, the Senate Health Committee said it would cost the U.S. $411 billion per year if half of all Americans took weight loss drugs from Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly. That’s $5 billion more than what Americans spent on all prescription drugs in 2022.

If these drugs are effective as they seem to be they might still be worth it at this price. Giving most Americans Ozempic would probably improve people's health more per $ than the current medical system is.

pjfin123··on Bruce Bastian, WordPerfect co-creator, has died
I know lawyers (who do a lot of very particular word processing) who kept using WordPerfect for decades after Microsoft Word had become the norm.
pjfin123··on Tesla shareholders advised to reject Musk's $56B pay
I think the pay package probably isn't in shareholders value at this point. It's a very large dilution and they've already gotten the value of Musk working for free for years.

However, it's totally unreasonable that his options compensation package is getting cancelled after he already fulfilled his end of the contract. I guess the takeaway is be careful incorporating in Delaware.

pjfin123··on 'Tesla Is Not a Family Business': New York Official Blasts Musk's Pay Package
Even if the compensation package is very large it seems totally unreasonable to cancel it after the fact. Shareholders agreed to pay Musk with what are effectively out of the money options, a reasonable and well understood financial contract. Then the contract gets cancelled after Musk has worked for free for years and dramatically increased the stock price because one of the Tesla board members went on vacation with Musk?
pjfin123··on Spotify Car Thing will be discontinued
Someone should jailbreak it and publish a method for installing Linux on the hardware

pjfin123··on Telegram founder claims Signal has a US government backdoor
To be fair trying to do encrypted group chats isn't at all straightforward.
pjfin123··on US House passes bill to ban TikTok if owners won't divest
It seems especially sketchy that USG is forcing TikTok to store it's data with Oracle, a company with close ties to the CIA.

The timing of this move is also suspect. TikTok is the probably the #1 platform currently where users and creators are outspoken in opposition to U.S. foreign policy in Israel/Palestine. And now the government is forcing them to sell to new owners.

pjfin123··on US House approves FISA renewal – warrantless surveillance and all
Whenever there's an emergency, real or imagined, be very careful which rights you give up. Once they're gone they're probably not coming back even once the emergency is over.

9-11 was decades ago and we still haven't gotten our freedom from being surveilled back.

pjfin123··on US House approves FISA renewal – warrantless surveillance and all
How is this legal? Congress doesn't have the authority to void the Fourth Amendment.
pjfin123··on Godot 4.3 Game Engine to Feature Native Wayland Support
I developed an open source Risk clone in Godot:

The biggest problem I've run into with Godot is that newer versions of the engine seem to frequently break my existing code.

pjfin123··on Gitstr: Send and receive Git patches over Nostr
Nostr is the only payment network I've ever used that lets you send payments of less than $0.10.
pjfin123··on Desalination can beat batteries for excess energy
I think we should build giant desalination and water distillation plants in the American Southwest where there's a lot of sun for solar power. Then we can pump the water inland and reclaim enormous amounts of currently unusable land.
pjfin123··on The copyright fight over authors and OpenAI's ChatGPT
Under U.S. copyright law you can't copyright facts, only the artistic expression.
pjfin123··on Bank of America's unrealized losses on securities rose to $131.6B
> Keeping securities until maturity also gives it the flexibility to avert mark-to-market losses.

They're still losses even if you don't mark them to the market. I think the next round of bailouts there is going to be a lot more corporate bond buying and subsidized borrowing by banks against bonds at par value.

pjfin123··on Unix Structured Concurrency
Is having a "process manager process" a good pattern? This process would have a record of all currently running processes and their children. When you want to create a new process you make a request to the process manager process. When a process is killed the process manager could then kill its children.
pjfin123··on MSFT needs so much power to train that it's considering small nuclear reactors
This would be so cool, hopefully this helps get nuclear off the ground.

pjfin123··on WTF Happened in 1971? (2019)
This is a good point people often miss. It's not that houses are more expensive today in (hrs worked / square foot) people just work more for a larger house.

I think the takeaway isn't that material living standard in the U.S.A. have declined but that they've only increased a little.

pjfin123··on WTF Happened in 1971? (2019)
I probably wouldn't recommend switching to the gold standard but I don't think the idea is "weird" or "no policy".

- People ran productive economies for hundreds (thousands?) of years on the Gold standard and it worked.

- It's credibly neutral and no one gets the exorbitant privilege of printing money.

- The supply expands randomly when new deposits are found but this actually works pretty well. As the economy grows we get better at finding gold so prices stay relatively flat in real terms.

- On a gold standard people will waste real resources trying to extract gold to sit in a vault but people waste real resources trying to get printed money too.

pjfin123··on WTF Happened in 1971? (2019)
I think the primary cause of the stagnation in the 1970s was a failure to continue to increase energy production. Other factors probably contributed, or contributed to us not making the transition to nuclear.
pjfin123··on Harry Browne’s Rules of Financial Safety (1999)
Yeah financial crises wouldn't be as bad if more of people's economic activity was more embedded in a family or local community with people they know personally.
pjfin123··on Harry Browne’s Rules of Financial Safety (1999)
> As this says, margin accounts used in a certain way can put you at risk to lose more than your original investment. However, they are sometimes necessary to make investments with little to no additional risk. For example I may own $50,000 worth of XYZ Corp. and want to sell it on a Monday so as to buy $50,000 worth of DEF Corp on that same Monday. I can't do that if I don't have a margin account - settlement is usually T+2 days.

This isn't really leverage. Your brokerage is just extending you temporary credit to paper over the fact that stock trades take two days to settle. You're never net long more than 100% of your investment.

pjfin123··on Harry Browne’s Rules of Financial Safety (1999)
> Rule 1: Your career provides your wealth

> Build your wealth upon your career. You most likely will make far more money from your business or profession than from your investments. Only very rarely does someone make a large fortune from investments.

This is good advice. If you're getting 2% dividend payments from stocks you need 5 million dollars to make 100k $/yr.
