pjbrunet··on Choose hotels by the quality of their WiFi
Good reason to get a Clear hotspot, no more looking for the working WIFI connection, or cafe password, or trying to get the "I agree" TOS page to load. (PS: I'm not invested in Clear, have no affiliation.)
pjbrunet··on Where Did App.net Go Wrong?
It didn't solve the problem of centralized control.
pjbrunet··on Where Online Services Go When They Die
+1 That was my first thought too ;-)

Maybe you could say the same about Google or Lycos?

If nobody wants you, there's always cybersquatters.

pjbrunet··on Where Online Services Go When They Die
This is why self-hosted WordPress is cool. If you have something important to say, do it on your own domain where you have permanent control of the content, presentation, backups, etc. And nobody can ban you, downvote, etc.

@mikeash I don't need the history, I lived through that era. Did you even read the whole Wikipedia entry?

Surely the popularity of his answer has something to do with Apple's unwillingness to open their platform to other languages? For example http://toucharcade.com/2009/06/20/full-commodore-64-emulator...
pjbrunet··on How to write an iOS app purely in C
How about you use your real name and explain why you dislike my opinion?

It's a fact people would love to write apps for the iPhone in other languages. But that's not possible because Apple is a tyrannical company. Do you endorse this tyranny and do you believe it's sustainable? I don't believe it's sustainable and I believe history agrees with me, based on my 30 years of following programming languages.

Who is the child now?

pjbrunet··on How to write an iOS app purely in C
Do you think I literally meant 15 minutes? 7 years is nothing.

Check this out. Objective-C wasn't even Apple's first choice.

"Apple CEO Gil Amelio started negotiations to buy Be Inc., but negotiations stalled when Be CEO Jean-Louis Gassée wanted $200 million; Apple was unwilling to offer any more than $125 million. Apple's board of directors decided NeXTSTEP was a better choice and purchased NeXT in 1996 for $429 million, bringing back Apple co-founder Steve Jobs." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BeOS

So you're all using Objective-C because Apple couldn't afford to buy the OS they wanted. Kinda sad!

pjbrunet··on How to write an iOS app purely in C
Wow I lost 20 hitpoints (and falling rapidly) over this opinion. Did I touch a nerve?

I can just imagine $AAPL shareholders quivering. "What is this guy talking about?"

Betting it all on Objective-C, a unknown language based on a superseded language. Steve was so ballsy. Google at least had a clue. Java + Android actually makes sense.

pjbrunet··on How to write an iOS app purely in C
I don't expect much wisdom from the youngsters here.

If you were even able to read back then, nobody had heard of Objective-C until your idol Steve touched it with his golden finger. If you remember, Apple was a sad joke of a failure from the 80s till the iPod launched. And I'm sure Objective-C was really integral to the success of the Apple IIe and the iPod.

Thanks for proving my point.

Looks like Objective C finally surpassed Fortran and Cobol somewhere in 2011. Good luck to you in the future ;-)

pjbrunet··on How to write an iOS app purely in C
And the CDROM wasn't a blip in history between the Compact Cassette and now? BTW the CD-ROM is still way more popular than Objective-C.

http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=cd%20rom%2C%20objecti...

But nice try anyway.

pjbrunet··on How to write an iOS app purely in C
One day, nobody will remember Objective-C.

Let Apple have its 15 minutes of fame.

That crossed my mind too. But I see an ounce of truth in this. I can speak from experience, when you're young and consumed by technology, you might have difficulty conversing with women, even if you're attractive physically. My dating life improved after majoring in art ;-)

In general, I think it's hard to find people that can keep an interesting conversation going, and in your 20s you don't have much life experience anyway, especially if you moved straight from a classroom to a cubicle.

As far as talking about yourself on a date, it's not necessarily a problem, it's just a different style of communicating. If she's talking about herself, that's a strong signal she's interested. Then I can respond with information about myself--that's perfectly acceptable and possibly the desired response. In a conversation, you can change the subject, what a concept ;-)

I recommend looking into Brian Tracy. Any bookstore should have his latest books.
pjbrunet··on Sistine Chapel
Relatively recently ;-)

According to Google "The frescoes of the Sistine Chapel and in particular the ceiling and accompanying lunettes by Michelangelo have been subject to a number of restorations, the most recent taking place between 1980 and 1994."

pjbrunet··on Nginx has replaced Apache as the most used web server among the top 10,000 sites
Go Gators ;-) As long as we're off on a tangent, this made me realize downvotes here are (pretty much) anonymous, but comments are not. I think it would be interesting if anonymous notes could be attached to downvotes. It would also be interesting if those anonymous notes were either public or private. So hypothetically, if you had 10 downvotes, you could hover that and read why people downvoted. Another approach (I like this idea better) the downvote could trigger a menu of tags like [Nonsense] [Rude] [Grammar] etc. Anonymous or not, constructive criticism is a good thing, in my opinion.
pjbrunet··on Nginx has replaced Apache as the most used web server among the top 10,000 sites
I assume the too-shy-to-reply downvoter thinks downtime is not a direct correlation to a problem with the webserver. While that's true, I was hoping to argue that the stack chosen is indicative of deeper problems such as stack complexity. A too-complex stack is more prone to break, which is part of the appeal of NginX, its simplicity. You could also prove Microsoft stacks are more or less likely to fail. For example .01% of Microsoft servers were offline last month, .009% of Apache servers were offline (> 1 hour) last month, etc. PS: If it wasn't obvious, I made up hypothetical percentages.
pjbrunet··on Nginx has replaced Apache as the most used web server among the top 10,000 sites
Hypothetically, a company like Hyperspin could create a chart of webservers that were offline (most likely to break) in the past X days. I think the results would be interesting. Example: Out of 1,234 servers that were offline for > 1 hour in the last month, 40% Microsoft, 30% Apache, 20% NginX, etc.

Why people might not want to get involved? Every situation is unique but 1. How do they know these two women don't know each other? 2. How many people actually saw the knife? Not everyone has 20/20 vision either. 3. Sounds like both of these women were arrested. Hypothetical hero could have been arrested too. 4. If you're going to intervene in a dangerous situation, you could be sued. 5. There could be a more dangerous accomplice nearby to make sure she gets the job done. 6. What if the woman with the knife is in a gang? Will the gang retaliate tomorrow? 7. Maybe she has a gun in another pocket? 8. How many people in the crowd know how to defend against a knife attack? 9. Maybe I watched too many Zatoichi episodes but "no good deed goes unpunished." ;-)

I was in a similar situation once and just gave up my phone and mug money. I was somewhat prepared because I was warned it would happen. Maybe this book saved my life http://www.roughguides.com/shop/rough-guide-new-york-city/ As I was pulled into a dark alley, a young woman walked by like it was completely normal to see someone mugged. Then I packed my things and left NY and never looked back.

pjbrunet··on Write Code, Crush Foes, Get Hired – Multiplayer Programming Tournament
The part about "let us help you find a job" sounds condescending, as if the industry wasn't begging for developers that can actually write code.

I would argue any developer that understands the Traveling Salesman Problem is turning down job opportunities left and right. Call me a skeptic but if you don't care about the code, then sounds like the ulterior motive is to screen/recruit young developers and get some publicity.

In any case, I'm glad you're concerned about my feelings. I'm not attacking you, I'm attacking the trend. The only type of contest I believe in is a contest for charity. Anyway, you knew the contest would be a risk when you came up with the idea, right?
