pjbeam··on Ask HN: Who Are Anonymous?
Anonymous is a meme that I think has been wielded by different groups at different times. There is no "official" anonymous and all it takes to join is to think to yourself "I am anonymous". If some of the reports of hacks coming out of the war zone and surrounding areas are true (such as tweet claiming Belarussian rail had been disrupted) then I suspect that Western state actors are using the meme right now.
pjbeam··on Moral injury can occur in many contexts and populations, including the workplace
Motivate a team is rather distinct from "say anything to your team to make X work". The former is my job and the latter = nope.
pjbeam··on Ask HN: What is your favorite fiction book?
Neuromancer
pjbeam··on Ask HN: People of FAANG, do your coworkers and mgmt read HN mentions of company?
I can't speak for Amazon execs but a couple times I've seen either a customer need on HN and was able to get them attention or have seen my product mentioned and shared the link with my team and org.
pjbeam··on Ask HN: Recent computer hacking convictions and employability?
In my experience a huge proportion of security roles are filled with checklist cowboys/girls. The cadre of people you're thinking of is a small part of the set.
pjbeam··on Case against OOP is understated, not overstated (2020)
There is some very large scale Rust stuff happening at Amazon; whether it's OO or not I do not know.
pjbeam··on Ask HN: How did you know when to call it quits and shut down your startup?
Or you don't want to play anymore.
pjbeam··on Why are air combat kills so rare? (2017)
Anecdata and certainly wasn't officially sanctioned but the battalion medics made adderrall quite available to us in Afghanistan in 2012.
pjbeam··on Why isn't there a universal data format for résumés?
This. Outsourcing judgment is far better in theory than practice. Hiring is and will remain messy.
pjbeam··on Ask HN: Are Microsoft development stack and Azure a dead-end career path?
Definitely not. MS shops will be around a long time after you and I are out of this game.
pjbeam··on The next big Wi-Fi standard is for sensing, not communication (2021)
Even then it isn't stopped; once something exists someone will eventually use it, and likely in way not intended by the designer.
pjbeam··on Amazon KDP delayed royalties til Jan 1 then killed the account on Dec 31
In case the Twitter OP checks out the thread--I can't magically fix this problem for you but I can definitely get human beings to take a look to see what can be done for you. Send me an email to my HN handle at protonmail dot com and we'll move the conversation to my work address from there.
pjbeam··on Ask HN: Are “superstar programmers” more independently-minded?
I don't know what you mean by superstar--that will mean wildly different things in different contexts/companies. That said if I read that as the mythic 10x ex-Google master I'm not entirely convinced such people exist nor if they do they would be so productive in other circumstances.
pjbeam··on Trailblazer List – 125 deep-tech companies making science fiction a reality
Makes sense, thank you. I do figure elective brain surgery will be a thing at some point but we seem a ways off from that today.
pjbeam··on Oh, 2022
I think you're reading that a bit too literally.
pjbeam··on I took a job at Amazon, only to leave after 10 months
There's a built in assumption of stock growth in the grant they give you, and after year 2 the bonus dries up so it's your base of 160 + whatever the equity is. Year 2 -> 3 comp drop is not uncommon.
pjbeam··on I took a job at Amazon, only to leave after 10 months
10 months in the pit is no joke. I'm on 13 and often wonder how I made it this far.
pjbeam··on Some Apple engineers rewarded up to $180k in stock bonuses as incentive to stay
An extra (small seeming) refresher doesn't seem like news?
pjbeam··on Anti-mimetic tactics for living a counter-cultural life
I'm reminded of broken mirror guy from Black Mirror who starts a YouTube (whatever it actually was) channel at the end.
pjbeam··on Intel apologises in China over Xinjiang supplier statement
Definitely
pjbeam··on Ask HN: Has anyone else been ghosted by Cloudflare?
HM here, don't apply to every job on a website (spamming is obvious) but definitely go for any you're actually interested in. Different recruiters often own different postings and some may be more responsive/amenable than others.
pjbeam··on I am offering a $100k bounty to the person who sets me up with my life parter
There's probably a TED-esque talk in it for every party involved. I am looking forward to reading the books written about the 2020s 20-30 years from now
pjbeam··on I am offering a $100k bounty to the person who sets me up with my life parter
At first read this seems ridiculous, but then I thought about it for a minute and am less certain. I guess at this point why the hell not? Seems like a lot of gray area though. I'm curious to see if anything actually comes of this. What a time to be alive. For what it's worth, odd public mechanisms or no, I do hope everyone finds someone as special to them as my wife is to me.
pjbeam··on Operation Whistle Pig: Inside the secret CBP unit with no rules
Customs and Border Protection
pjbeam··on Amazon is bypassing supply chain chaos with chartered ships and long-haul planes
This is the Amazon way.
pjbeam··on SF suspends cannabis tax to help dispensaries compete with drug dealers
Dealers are more likely to make house calls?
pjbeam··on Apple broke up with me
See my comment above, I am standing by to try to help.
pjbeam··on Apple broke up with me
Hey, I'm not sure if you'll see this but I work at Amazon and can at least try to get a human for you. I can't promise magical solutions but I can get you some real person attention. Email me at my HN handle at protonmail dot com and we'll move the discussion to my work address from there.
pjbeam··on The New Ten-Factor Authentication Processes
I hear you, it is obnoxious, and probably not the best solution. That said the employees absolutely are weak spots in the armor.
pjbeam··on Cocaine Paraphernalia Ads in the 70s
Defying authority is glorious much of the time.
