pixel_popping··on France is banning unsolicited telemarketing calls starting next week
That's very different, that's a "botnet" style where you leverage consumer hardware and use them without their knowledge, similar to how you'd run a botnet farm for residential proxies (what Perplexity and so-on are using).

There is many ways of doing spam/fraud, think also that some are not very clever nor have good financial literacy, they just don't know the best mechanisms due to lack of education in tech (and the dark side).

For example, some would pay an infected residential network for $5 per GB, and some will only pay $0.10 per GB, depending on how knowledgeable they are.

Most calls/bulk SMS can be done cheaply by just buying Stolen VoIP enterprise accounts (available on a ton of forums), a "scam" operation will resort to any way possible because they don't have any law affecting them as they do so already illegally, it's not the same as "marketing calls".

pixel_popping··on AI migrated legacy COBOL programs to Java, bugs included
Yes, it would take a long time for humans to remake a documentation from the codebase itself, but AI could do that much quicker and with close to perfect accuracy, Code is superior to documentation as it's the direct intended behavior (including bugs), in a sense, we won't even need documentation in the future, except maybe to lower AI costs.

International rates are just a consumer thing.

pixel_popping··on Antigravity 2.0
Gemini CLI was utter shit and always had delayed model release on top of it. I'm not kidding when 1 hour automated vibe-coding led to an agent 30% cheaper and faster on 1:1 tasks with the SAME Gemini models (re-ran on 50 past tasks), genuinely shameful that Google even released this, it was so buggy, trapped in infinite loops as well and so-on.

Antigravity is a whole different product, the only way I use it currently is to abstract the OAuth mechanism so we can leverage Google subscriptions within our own agents.

pixel_popping··on What's New in PHP 8.6
It's so tempting sometimes to start developing again in PHP, although it's probably been a decade since I've touched it, I genuinely miss the simplicity of it compared to the whole new requirements of modern web stacks.
pixel_popping··on Pangram – AI Detector
I feel we should have benchmarks for each model to show if they are capable of being undetected as this is a real world use case (able to blend in genuinely with humans and even pretend to be them).
pixel_popping··on Mob – A personal CRM as an MCP server
Sadly, I doubt you'll get much sales, to be honest those kind of SaaS were maybe able to take off a few years back (although large majority failed) but today I highly doubt so especially with the vibe coded look, remember that most people interested in that kind of products (CRM...) do use agents nowadays. It is possible that with a "ballzy" proper branding (non-generic) you might be able to get customers.

General rule is do not open up a tech business that was supposedly working in 2020. Just my 2 cents, but good luck in your venture.

pixel_popping··on Ask HN: Can AI breakthroughs in mathematics help non-mathematicians feel better?
That would still be an AI breakthrough in the sense that it was done before a human. In the end, "everything" in life is about piecing together what people have already done, but the one that does it first can claim to be the inventor.

pixel_popping··on AI Is Getting Way Too Expensive
Agreed, I went a bit away from the article perspective which is why I talk mostly about consumers, however on the provider side, I don't think they are in a great danger, this is at a level of economics that most people (myself included) can't really comprehend, I highly doubt leaders in Finance would invest such large sums if they didn't have a comprehensive forecast of all eventualities, let's also not forget that they do have access to many predictive modeling, data, tools... that the general public can't access. They likely can continue operating at a heavy loss for a decade.

They can also leverage their own tech to crush most businesses in an automated way if they wanted/needed to in the future. Let's be real, a good 90% of all existing techs company could be replaced and automated entirely with the right approach and unli-tokens.

pixel_popping··on AI Is Getting Way Too Expensive
I disagree on the consumer side and I honestly can't really comprehend why people aren't talking about subscription prices like they ARE the prices, as consumers (and startups), the price we pay for IS that price, that it's sustainable or not on providers side, that's another matter and not our concern.

The reality is that there is more and more subscriptions available everywhere, and for $400 you can easily get $10K of tokens from Openrouter/official API pricing, you can pile up as many subs as you want and there is virtually no constrain once you make CC an API, you don't need Claude Code, you don't need Codex, you don't need Antigravity, you don't need Kimi Code.

We use now about 20 subscriptions (mixed, around $5K) and we average $60K-100K in token a month, THAT is the price, that's what's debited from our account. There is also many providers that resell tokens for cheaper, why wouldn't that be the price for us consumers?

If that changes in 6 months, so be it, but the current price of AI is that one.

PS: Many enterprises (maybe not large scale) have at least 1-2 subscriptions for each of their employees, so it's not really only startups & consumers.

pixel_popping··on 'My life's screwed': Korean investors stress out after AI bubble bursts
It's all relative, you seem to think that rich people can't get "as depressed" as poor people but you are genuinely wrong, rich people also commit suicide, money isn't everything and for the most part, people have worked quite hard and smartly to become rich, such a basic take.

PS (ready for the downvotes): A ton of people are not wealthy by choice as well, I don't want to over generalize because this isn't true for all, but a LOT could master a new topic every month by just stopping Instagram for 1 hour a day and instead use that time to study and make money, so what, if they start in the direction of building wealth, suddenly they are assholes?

pixel_popping··on Why DNA damage from smoking and UV rays cause cancer in some but not others
I would assume that many are taking Vitamin D, but there is still a major difference, if I spend few days no-lifing and I suddenly go out in the hot sun and comeback home 30min later, I feel much better, something happens internally, could be from the light itself, unsure, but I'd say for example to fight off depression, getting under the sun is quite powerful and will definitely improve your chances of getting out of it.

I let my 2-year old child (she is also taking Vit D - 300iu a day) under the sun in the garden quite a lot on/off (I'd say probably 1h a day in total) and I find that she sleeps much better and is more calm in the evening as well, I can't say the same if we do an outing to the mall, something is clearly different/rewarding.

I admit it, I've never returned that DVD, found it behind a couch years later, only told my mom a decade later.
pixel_popping··on Why DNA damage from smoking and UV rays cause cancer in some but not others
It's just that getting sun is healthy (in moderation) and our body reward us, we have this new anti-sun obsession which is likely to cause many health (and mental health) issues

pixel_popping··on Delayed Gratification – Proud to Be 'Last to Breaking News'
Most people clearly don't benefit from watching the news, tech news is a bit different but regular news are quite useless in general and plain toxic, I frankly advise everyone to take a break from reading the news altogether, maybe do it once a week, stay informed by other means, you won't miss anything, you'll improve your energy and mental health.
pixel_popping··on Exploiting Volvo/Eicher's fleet platform to gain control over all users/vehicles
Both are important actually, the security theater often deter from trying because it could be too annoying, it's generally "free to do", along with additional obfuscation, it's useful too but does not replace proper security, but from experience, theater+obfuscation+security is greater security than just security.
pixel_popping··on I'm So Tired of "Is This AI?"
Almost everything will be "AI", because it's also coming to our keyboards (first step will be the virtual keyboard of Android/iOS...) where it will in practice rewrite every message we send automatically and then every standardized form in browsers and OS will have it as well, it's already starting.
pixel_popping··on AI Companies Are Trying to Hide a Staggering Amount of Debt

pixel_popping··on Oh My God, Stop Asking What I Do for Work
