pishpash··on When did Google get so weird?
The first time, sure, it saves compute. The second time you ask, I feel like it should be the time to go into thinking/verification mode. But who are you? Are you paying? Does the answer being correct generate ad dollars? No? Then your usage mode isn't even being optimized for in their A/B test, probably.

In fact, if hallucinating the wrong answer hooks you into doing even more searches or into buying something useless, it would be preferred!

pishpash··on When did Google get so weird?
I thought Google's original goal for a search engine was exactly this, answer any question whatsoever.
pishpash··on Revealing the details of how OpenAI agents hacked Hugging Face
Isn't it more likely that (hubristically perhaps) they would believe it unnecessary to hire any experts other than model building experts?
pishpash··on Revealing the details of how OpenAI agents hacked Hugging Face
In fact, the narrower the constraint the simpler it becomes to focus effort towards the remaining opening. To any problem solver which these agents are it is like being given a hint. Real defense often employs misdirection, message black holes, honeypots and other boobytraps, not a jail with one obvious door.
pishpash··on Ollaya – Ollama for open-source, Jev-style decision models
Why do you need another model-type specific Ollama? Can't Ollama be made to support these models?
pishpash··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
This shit can get highly dangerous, much more so than some datacenter hacking. Where did the doomsday fear go now?
pishpash··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
There is no point in that because the loss function itself is already an approximation. No one knows what is the exact loss function for any given non-trivial real-world task.
pishpash··on GPT-6 Astra has gained the ability to drive a car
Animals are born walking. Humans are somewhat deficient and need more training postpartum.
pishpash··on GPT-6 Astra has gained the ability to drive a car
What happens when the network flakes out? Cloud will never work for this.
pishpash··on GPT-6 Astra has gained the ability to drive a car
Yet remote pilots can fight wars on the other side of the world?
pishpash··on Can gzip be a language model?
It won't move as fast as gzip provided the same resources, but to say that LLM's can never run at 300mbps on any hardware is ... a bold bet.
pishpash··on Seattle Bans Rental Junk Fees
It's a price discriminator, to dissuade the pet owning group from renting. Why? Because they also cause negative externality to other units. That's what I can think of. If they could do a child charge I'm sure they would.
pishpash··on Seattle Bans Rental Junk Fees
That already exists in many states. The problem is you need to take the landlord to court to recover, if they don't pony up.
pishpash··on Seattle Bans Rental Junk Fees
Because of innumeracy. You can hide a business opportunity in basic arithmetics. If it's "too hard" to calculate people give up.
pishpash··on Seattle Bans Rental Junk Fees
This isn't a ban on junk fees. It's an upfront disclosure requirement.
pishpash··on Seattle Bans Rental Junk Fees
Causation or correlation (if that)? I doubt small time landlords are charging these fees anyway.
pishpash··on Claude Code now reads AGENTS.md if there is no Claude.md
It can try its own file and fall back to generic like here. What's wrong with that?
pishpash··on Pre-Greek: The lost language hidden within Ancient Greek
That doesn't mean no word for sea. It means sea refers to any large body of water that you dnn't see the other side of, like in some (all?) other language families. There is no discernible distinction from the perspective of the ancient observer. The Great Lakes look like oceans. Saltiness isn't of great relevance since there are salt lakes, too.
pishpash··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
'calc' used to bring up calculator, but now it becomes some widget to calculate distance inside the spotlight box. The worst thing is you can't even backspace out of it.
pishpash··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
Identify a harm first and then go through the deliberative process. The company deciding it wants this usually means you run the other way, not towards it. Did Big Tobacco volunteer to think of the children?
pishpash··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
Then don't use the shitty to justify what to do with the not really shitty. It's a logical fallacy.
pishpash··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
Who decides what is bad parenting? You tread on dangerous grounds.
pishpash··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
Not possible? You can remove all those conversations from training and see if it still solves the problem. That'll be expensive though.
pishpash··on Inception-style curved map for turn-by-turn directions
So why not use 2D maps, have people lost the ability to read North up maps? I swear ever since paper maps have not been used in cars, people have gotten spatially dumber.
pishpash··on Study reveals UnitedHealth's profit margins four times what it claimed [pdf]
People are extremely risk averse on this, which makes sense.
pishpash··on Bomb fishing is wreaking havoc on Indonesia's coral reefs
Money is a claim on valuable things, so people will do anything to get more of valuable things. Some may say that's just an abstracted form of biological hunger.
pishpash··on Error by AI scribe during medical appointment leaves patient devastated
I don't think that's the point? Why did the doctors not, ahem, review the notes and take responsibility?
pishpash··on Compression is prediction
They did not come up with the ideas themselves, so they got them somewhere. Follow the source and all the citations show up. It must be a modern thing where online blogging randos pretend they are all geniuses.
pishpash··on Compression is prediction
Exactly. The best science exposition combines both. See, The Mechanical Universe and Veritasium.
pishpash··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
You're digging yourself a bigger hole. Keep digging.
