pirates··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
If Bill left the UK temporarily would the ability to turn on ADP come back? Or is a device from the UK that’s not able to enroll somehow prevented forever? Not saying that this makes it OK, just curious
pirates··on Transit rewards
In my experience the polite thing is to just say “San Francisco” instead of talking down to people.
pirates··on Trump says AI will be renamed 'super intelligence' in all US documents
Stupor intelligence
pirates··on Moving from cash to credit cards, PayPal, etc. is an ongoing privacy disaster
He would take mobile and cashless payments if he knew how
pirates··on Robin Williams' Daughter to Fans Creating AI Videos: 'Have Some Shame'
Bob Ross was not in any modern sense a content creator.
pirates··on Suspension of the de minimis administrative exemption for imports $800 or less
you might think you do this, that you have 100% control over your logic and feelings, but everyone knows that it isn’t true.
pirates··on Seattle Bans Rental Junk Fees
Both generalizations seem to be intentionally exaggerating to make their points.
pirates··on I don't like passkeys
Doesn’t this mean that a compromised device with passkeys on it is worse than a compromised password since the passkeys can’t be rotated? I feel like the answer is obvious so there must be another angle I’m missing
pirates··on Australia Bans Generative A.I. From Official Music Charts
Isn’t autotune something that you give an input and params and get the same output every time? I don’t think it’s generative in the sense that people mean when they say generative AI.

If I’m right, is that different from a paint splatter brush in Photoshop? It “literally generates” a splatter without you having to place every drop.

pirates··on Tell HN: PayPal Blocks GrapheneOS
They didn’t read it that closely, they just wanted to put someone down and move along.
pirates··on Meta reaches $17B settlement over social media harms to children
I don’t understand either. Usually someone responds with something like “the local <whatever> only posts updates on <app> so what choice do I have” or something to do with peer pressure or FOMO. I don’t doubt that people deal with those problems but they seem like better ones to have. But it seems like a lot of people just cannot imagine living without the apps anymore.
pirates··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
Do you think that experience is representative of all dining experiences in the US or did you cherry pick one?
pirates··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
The dining experiences I’ve had in London vs Barcelona are very different, and both of them are represented in these comments as “European”.
pirates··on An elliptic curve of rank ≥ 30
BSD == Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer I think? I am also uninitiated. I enjoy learning about the millennium prize problems but BSD is one I don’t have a very good understanding of.
pirates··on The Amazon tax
Over time I have come to trust Costco’s curation. Their standards seem high, and there are definitely products and brands that they sell that I don’t like, but those are subjective tastes vs objective low quality in my experience. I don’t buy everything there, but I take note of the brands and products that they either keep for a long time or dump quickly.
pirates··on Grok 4.6 scores 61 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index
It won’t, but you do you.
pirates··on Grok 4.6 scores 61 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index
It is seriously absurd to not believe he did it as a Nazi salute. But you just want to not believe.
pirates··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
Reactions like this always make me appreciate not having kids.
pirates··on The US tried to stop cartel money-laundering; devastated mom-and-pop businesses
Interesting, PNC has never once done anything like this to me. In fact I feel that they are pretty up front about telling you what you have available and what your actual balance is.
pirates··on Georgia police officers fired after Flock camera misuse
This is hilarious
pirates··on Georgia police officers fired after Flock camera misuse
Typical conservative brain-dead response.
pirates··on Georgia police officers fired after Flock camera misuse
It’s tiring for good people when every cop they interact with thinks they’re the villain. The cops are not the good people.
pirates··on Thanks FedEx, This Is Why We Keep Getting Phished (2024)
At my company they started placing the emails in your inbox in a way that rules looking these headers didn’t flag them. Except that only seems to be true in Outlook and other email clients flag them just fine.
pirates··on Apple is getting this wrong
My company locks down the USB ports on our macbooks so that only input devices are recognized. Flash drives and the like are not recognized. We’re a small private company in the telco space so definitely not the mob or a cartel.

Why would I need a USB drive to docker build or run a debugger?

pirates··on Apple is getting this wrong
But I don’t have to use any apps from the store, in fact I’d say that at my company there aren’t any apps available on the store that we use. So the parent is right, it’s perfectly usable without ever touching iCloud. I don’t think I’ve ever even opened the settings for it on my work laptop
pirates··on Why ugly buildings create NIMBYism
You don’t know that they didn’t try anything, it’s a bad faith assumption to try to downplay their points.
pirates··on Google has abandoned Google News?
Apollo on iOS
pirates··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
AFCON is already a thing and while it is decently popular it’s no where near the world cup or the euros. Part of that is that it takes place during the domestic club competitions though.
pirates··on I regret migrating to Codeberg
To test the limits of the very policy we’re discussing?
pirates··on Android May Soon Restrict On-Device ADB
I have no issue restarting my iOS/Mac/Linux machines because the time to get back to doing fun or productive stuff is measured in seconds. And usually you only have to restart one time. Windows used to take ages, and often you’d reboot only find out that something else that requires a reboot only triggered because of the previous reboot, so you were sometimes in for 2-3 restarts.

It’s not like that anymore in my experience at least but the stigma stuck.
