pirates··on Today I am launching Yggdrasil, the most advanced AGI interface on the planet
How can you boast that this is the most advanced AGI interface when AGI isn’t real?
pirates··on Self-hosting my photos with Immich
That time would be better spent just learning YAML, since you’ll encounter it in a hell of a lot more places than Nix
pirates··on How Kit Kat Was Killed: Video Shows What a Robot Taxi Couldn’t See
First of all fuck google, not just for this but for all the dumb crap they pull. They don’t get a pass out of some nonsensical appeal to authority. Second, If “large gamble” involves killing things then they shouldn’t be gambling. It doesn’t matter if it was a cat, bird, person, whatever. If autonomous cars are supposed to be so much better than human drivers then they need to figure this out. Most people never kill anything while driving.
pirates··on Ask HN: How many people got VPNs in response to laws like UK Online Safety Act?
This is what I do, except into the UK so I can watch geo-blocked sports. Pure wireguard, nothing fancy. But that also means if anything were to go wrong or stop working I can just tear it down and set it up somewhere else.
pirates··on Warner Bros Begins Exclusive Deal Talks With Netflix
Paramount/NBC/Peacock/Fox/ESPN have live sports, which are the only thing left worth paying for, everything else can be skipped or pirated.
pirates··on Ask HN: Glasses with lights that flash whenever they detect cigarette smoke?
> * Alert others that there’s secondhand smoke in the area.

They will smell it in a moment too. They might even be able to smell it before they see the glasses.

> * Show smokers how far their smoke travels, making the invisible visible.

They don’t care about this, especially in a place where smoking is allowed. And if it isn’t allowed then the solution is to kick them out, and therefore there will be no more smoke soon and the glasses won’t be doing much.

pirates··on So, how did porn ID laws go?
What video?
pirates··on Victorian-style lines for the web: Elements of identical width
As good as the image tracing has gotten over the years, using the stock image trace function is never going to be as good as re-tracing the image yourself with the pen tool to get the exact curves and lines correct. Do it once (or twice or three times if you want a couple slightly different wreath shapes), then either make the shape a brush or use the blend/steps tool to create as many repeats as you want. Or option/alt drag to make a copy and build it yourself.

That will cut down on the finicky stuff and give you a better result in the end.

pirates··on What Is a City Super App and Why Every City Needs One
I think the idea of this is intriguing. Unfortunately the track record for my major midwest US city indicates that if they tried this the contract would be awarded entirely based on nepotism and political favors, the app itself would never actually be finished, and would be rolled out in such a half-assed way that 80% of the actually useful portions would never work. It would never be good enough to make it a worthwhile expense and would just serve as another way to siphon tax dollars that would be better spent elsewhere.

I wish it weren’t like that but nobody around here seems to know how to make and deliver something like this. The one exception is a single already existing service that was so bad that any improvement whatsoever is seen as a huge achievement.

pirates··on Advent of A11Y
I can’t help but feel some sort of disconnect between “here are all of the additional considerations and tweaks you should make to make your site more accessible” and the fact that everyone talking about it can’t be assed to write “accessibility” instead of using the numeronym.
pirates··on Built a Free, Unlimited Screen Recorder Because Everything Else Annoyed Me
Privacy and Chrome are incompatible with one another.
pirates··on Liberal towns backtrack on license plate trackers amid concerns about privacy
> You have to assume it is helping at least to some degree... since cops are generally in favor of them. No, I assume the exact opposite. Cops and people who are law enforcement adjacent lie and obfuscate all the time. They have no real reason to need it but they know they can get their hands on it, so they do. Any justification happens after the fact, when it will be harder to take away.
pirates··on Zigbook Is Plagiarizing the Zigtools Playground
Report to whom? Github, who allows the behavior and therefore doesn’t see anything wrong with it, or the repo admins who have proven they they couldn’t give a rat’s ass about the very thing you’re reporting? The well is already poisoned, there is no reason to think that they’d suddenly change their stance and cooperate.
pirates··on Can Dutch universities do without Microsoft?
VS Code is fine.
pirates··on Migrating the main Zig repository from GitHub to Codeberg
It is absolutely not socially acceptable, and people like yourself blithely declaring that it is is getting tiring. Maybe it’s socially acceptable in your particular circles to not give a single shit, take no pride in the slop you throw at people, and expect them to wade through it no questions asked? But not for the rest of us.
pirates··on One mile on bike is a 42¢ economic gain to society, a mile driving is a 20¢ loss
A “jacket” for -30C/-22F. Asking 99.9% of people to ride their bike in those temps is a complete non-starter.
pirates··on Unpopular Opinion: I hate ThinkPads and there are better laptops for me
Why not add it to your favorites list instead?
pirates··on S&box is now an open source game engine
> I fear soon the only way is to just avoid playing competitive games with strangers.

This has been the winning move for about a decade now.

pirates··on Someone at YouTube Needs Glasses: The Prophecy Has Been Fulfilled
Why is it automatically assumed that just because you post a video on youtube that you deserve to be paid? None of my videos made me any money and I’m fine with that.
pirates··on I don't care how well your "AI" works
AI-generated docs, charts, READMEs, TOE diagrams. My company’s Confluence is flooded with half assed documentation from several different dev teams that either loosely matches or doesn’t match at all the behavior or configuration of their apps.

For example they ask to have networking configs put into place and point us at these docs that are not accurate and then they expect that we’ll troubleshoot and figure out what exactly they need. It’s a complete waste of time and insulting to shove off that work onto another team because they couldn’t be fucked to read their own code and write down their requirements accurately.

pirates··on It's Not Just You – The iOS Keyboard Is Broken
> I hope to learn what can be done do to improve typing on iOS and maybe get rid of the autocorrect in Apple apps on macOS.

Settings > General > Keyboard > turn off autocorrect

pirates··on Microsoft doesn't understand the dislike for Windows' new direction
As usual it’s the end users and customers who have to do the testing.

I’m still annoyed that they fucked around with the webhooks by trying to force everyone to configure them through whatever “Power Automate” is, which introduced a whole bunch of permissions and ownership issues, not to mention the absolute dross of a UI. They kept sending emails and putting notices like “we hear that you despise this but stay tuned for updates!”, not to mention the hilariously short deadline.

Then they finally caved and said “oh, sorry. you can keep your old webhooks but you still have to go regenerate them”. And still today I get random emails saying “your power automate flow has a new URL”. It does? Why? I thought I threw that thing in the trash.

pirates··on Implications of AI to schools
This matches my experience pretty well. My high school was using it 15 years ago and it was a spotty, inconsistent morass even back then. Our papers were turned in over the course of the semester, and late into the year you’d get flagged for “plagiarizing” your own earlier paper.
pirates··on Trade Chaos Causes Businesses to Rethink Their Relationship with the U.S.
Yeah, walk around any popular shopping area in Japan and you’ll see box after box of items marked “Made in China”
pirates··on The Final Straw: Why Companies Replace Once-Beloved Technology Brands
I think it’s bs that spotify premium still allows ads to be played during podcasts. It’s similar to youtube premium. I’m paying to not have ads, and you still serve me ads. I don’t care that they’re “in roll” or from the creator instead of the platform. That’s a distinction without a difference. Figure it out or I stop paying. And yes, I stopped paying.
pirates··on Authors dumped from New Zealand's top book prize after AI used in cover designs
> I mean they have to know that's repulsive to a large segment of the population, right?

They’re trying to cram AI into everywhere they possibly can, so even if they do know that people don’t like it, that doesn’t help the almighty bottom line, and so not using AI is never considered.

pirates··on I don’t need a Steam Machine
Steam definitely has a ton of garbage, half-assed, slop games on it. They definitely were not made with time and love.
pirates··on Guests ejected mid-stay from bankrupt hotel chain Sonder
Wait for 2 sunders before DPS
pirates··on The end of naked locker rooms
I stayed at a ryokan in Japan recently, and of course the baths and pools are 100% nude, and people strip down naked in the changing rooms to enter them. Men and women separate at all times.

It was a new experience for me but it also felt 100% natural and by the second night it was totally normal and I didn’t feel modest or anything. There was an unspoken understanding that we’re all there to just relax and recover and help our bodies feel good. Nobody made me feel weird or self conscious, nobody stared, no one made comments or really even said much of anything outside of a few funny jokes that we all laughed at that had nothing to do with the setting.

pirates··on Yann LeCun to depart Meta and launch AI startup focused on 'world models'
Those people are intelligent, they’re just selfish and have no qualms over making money off the repugnant crap they’re doing.
