pirates··on I regret migrating to Codeberg
To test the limits of the very policy we’re discussing?
pirates··on Android May Soon Restrict On-Device ADB
I have no issue restarting my iOS/Mac/Linux machines because the time to get back to doing fun or productive stuff is measured in seconds. And usually you only have to restart one time. Windows used to take ages, and often you’d reboot only find out that something else that requires a reboot only triggered because of the previous reboot, so you were sometimes in for 2-3 restarts.

It’s not like that anymore in my experience at least but the stigma stuck.

pirates··on IBM is on pace for its worst day ever
Make ads lying about how good at AI they are.
pirates··on Just Let Me Write Digits
I use spaces everywhere I can, it’s part of a pattern I use that’s easy for me to remember for when I have to enter it often, and the space usually counts as a special character. I’d say 90-95% of the time it works.
pirates··on The infinite scroll may become endangered if controversial Calif. law passes
The presentation of speech is regulated in many ways already. The idea that any type of regulation on speech whatsoever is unconstitutional is false. Also, how is a hypothetical regulation on infinite scroll unconstitutional, but “go after targeted ads” isn’t?
pirates··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
Maybe they should work on that then.
pirates··on The revenge of the philosophy majors
why does this matter to people so much? i’ve been typing without much regard to capitalization case since AIM 25 years ago. this is an internet forum, it’s really not that important. if you aren’t going to engage with the substance you’re just taking swipes for no good reason.
pirates··on Zuckerberg's war on whistleblowers
The mask was off way way before this imo but I think you’re right that inanity of it is telling in a lot of ways.
pirates··on I am a person who will look at the Steam Machine and cry
Somehow “it just works” is a meme or joke for every company except Valve
pirates··on U.S. science is in chaos
You tried calling them out with a “gotcha” to make yourself look smart and then got told off, but they’re the obnoxious one?
pirates··on Nobody ever gets credit for fixing problems that never happened (2001) [pdf]
when you do things right, people won’t be sure you’ve done anything at all.
pirates··on Google is finally killing uBlock Origin in Chrome for good
If the site is low volume then you’re probably right. But if I wanted to add the domain to my own list manually I couldn’t since it would break the site.
pirates··on Replies to comments on my "LLMs are eroding my career" post
It’s clearly Jason in this scenario
pirates··on Canada to order military plane fleet from Sweden in shift from US suppliers
No, I think you missed it by a country mile. “Probably” was meant in the sense of “out of all the things the gulf states have reason to be mad at the US about, starting the conflict is ‘probably’ (obviously, lol) the thing they’re most unhappy with”. They weren’t saying the US “probably” started the conflict.
pirates··on Splinter Cell veteran says realistic modern lighting has screwed up stealth game
Newer Metal Gear Solid games definitely have light and dark as an element of stealth. In MGSV playing at night is basically easy mode.
pirates··on Modern Blu-ray drives can now rip GameCube, Wii, and Xbox 360 games to PC
We all do illegal things all the time, I’m fine knowing that this one goes in the “bad” pile. I’m sure something terrible will happen to me soon.
pirates··on Blind Waymo Users Revel in the Joy of Riding Alone
My job has nothing to do with me not wanting a datacenter built a mile from my house on what used to be forested land.
pirates··on Congress Wants You to Pay $130 a Year Just to Drive an Electric Car
EVs on average are heavier than ICE vehicles, and road damage scales with weight very quickly, but that’s not to say EVs are out there tearing up all the roads. Semi-trucks, construction equipment, heavy machinery towing, etc all do way way more damage than passenger vehicles by a wide margin.
pirates··on New Lifetime Plex Pass Pricing
If Jellyfin had a PS5 app I would switch to it instantly, it’s the only thing keeping me on plex right now. Are there other similar apps for streaming your own media to a playstation?
pirates··on It is time to give up the dualism introduced by the debate on consciousness
no you didn’t kill it, it was never alive. the same way my dishwasher or vacuum aren’t killed when they break and i replace them. even if the robot “remembers”, who cares? when i bin my phone did i kill siri because she sometimes remembered things for me?
pirates··on Mozilla to UK regulators: VPNs are essential privacy and security tools
If your kids are accessing things they know they shouldn’t, and you know they’re doing it anyway, is that it? We’re at an impasse? I really don’t want to tell anyone how to parent, but I’ll say that if I did what you described I would have been punished and/or grounded, because I knew the rules, and I knew I was breaking them.
pirates··on I don't think AI will make your processes go faster
some of us couldn’t give a rat’s ass about the customer. One of our customers charges people for paying their own bills via certain methods, which is completely bogus and I remind everyone loudly all the time that they do this. Everyone agrees that this customer sucks to work with, and the less time spent with them the better. The people from the customer’s end suck, they’re not technical, they have in-fighting with their own teams during calls, have decades long errors with their integration that they have never fixed…the list goes on. For this customer and a few others, please give me a spec that I can implement, shove it back across the aisle, and forget about. The absolute last thing I want is to have to talk to them more.
pirates··on Uber wants to turn its drivers into a sensor grid for self-driving companies
It’s not, but this guy is in probably 70% of threads posting what he thinks is the same submission. I’ve seen several instances where the posts are different but he just links it and says it’s a duplicate anyway. If he wants to be a mod so bad he should just apply for a job imo.
pirates··on Ghostty is leaving GitHub
GitLab is definitely not as slow as GitHub, and it doesn’t matter because if you want to you can self host it, where it performs absolutely fine too
pirates··on I Got Sick of Remembering Port Numbers
Hacker News loves to make snarky comments about everything to do with K8s and YAML all the time, and yet in my experience the amount of times an issue was caused by actual YAML can be counted on one hand.

Way more often it’s developers who can’t figure out that their http library only supports 2 concurrent connections, or emit garbage/malformed log lines and then bitch that they can’t see their app logs because we dropped them, or can’t be fucked to do “kubectl describe” in their own developer namespace that they have full permission for.

If you truly experience issues with just using YAML then you need to skill up probably.

pirates··on Online age verification is the hill to die on
Be careful saying you don’t use social media or soon you’ll have a wholly off-topic sub-thread about whether or not HN is social media too, even though we’ve all read the same tired arguments from both sides about a billion times in other threads.
pirates··on He asked AI to count carbs 27000 times. It couldn't give the same answer twice
If even experts in the field don’t know all of the limitations then it’s even more important to stress that relying on the output of an LLM is a poor choice without additional checking and verification.

Even with calculators, I was taught that you should double check by hand sometimes to make sure you got it right.

pirates··on Tell HN: An app is silently installing itself on my iPhone every day
So then it’s not really any lack of polish or technical debt, just user error.
pirates··on How to be anti-social – a guide to incoherent and isolating social experiences
hacker news is not such a loftier place that I treat it much differently than instant messaging. but even still, there are plenty of reasons why someone might write how they do. i promise you that i am not trying to be manipulative or status seeking, i just have auto capitalization turned off and I don’t give two shits if weirdos like you don’t like it.

nothing personal kid

pirates··on Over-editing refers to a model modifying code beyond what is necessary
Company pays for company’s tokens, so company’s problem, not mine. I am happy to skill up and avoid overusing tokens for my personal sub, but if it’s getting results then I couldn’t care less how much my employer has to pay for it. They’re begging me to use it in the first place anyway.
