pirate787··on Private prisons announce $1.4B in revenue as immigration detentions climb
For-profit is the delivery system, which should save taxpayer money. Systems where the institutions are directly administered by taxpayer funds and their attendant public employee unions also have political/financial incentives.
pirate787··on Nine PBS sues Iron Mountain over blocked access to archival data
Sesame Street is doing just fine and the people making billions off the licensing will have to make do without federal taxpayer subsidy.
pirate787··on Nine PBS sues Iron Mountain over blocked access to archival data
Congress voted to stop federal funding of the CPB, it had nothing to do with DOGE.

In a free society, we don't need state-run media.

pirate787··on Nine PBS sues Iron Mountain over blocked access to archival data
Actually it is PBS that bears responsibility here. Very likely the decision by PBS to hire OSS was corrupt (OSS are just a reseller of Iron Mountain) and they made no other provision to backup the files a second way, like AWS Glacier.
pirate787··on Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5
You can't be bitter because Europe squandered technological and capital market parity with the US in just 20 years.
pirate787··on Challenging the Narrative of European Decline
Krugman so badly wants this to be true. But handwaving away massive difference in IT innovation and in practical data like housing size and vastly greater American consumption does not make it true. Just 20% of European homes even have air conditioning. European industrial energy costs are more than 2x the U.S. Don't ignore the data. Europe is behind and falling behind at an ever-faster clip. And the strategic issues of continued vast unskilled migration into Europe and the need to re-arm in a post-NATO world are further economic burdens that will tip most of Europe into middle-income status.
pirate787··on Peopleless economy? Not technically impossible
Piketty is just a marxist flailing around, backfilling data to fit his belief that communism is the solution for every problem. He's been spectacularly wrong in his predictions so far, for example he said Milei would be "devastating" for Argentina and the opposite is the case.

This is the real issue:

pirate787··on Iran Severely Damaged US Air Ops Center in Qatar Soon After War Began
Also interesting is that the US didn't need the base and was able to operate command and control from South Carolina.
pirate787··on New statue in London, attributed to Banksy, of a suited man, blinded by a flag
In the UK the establishment is generally unsettled by the display of the English flag.

pirate787··on Scores decline again for 13-year-old students in reading and mathematics
Mississippi is one of the recent education success stories though.
pirate787··on Scores decline again for 13-year-old students in reading and mathematics
The change was in fact designed to make the scores jump. The purpose is compressing the top scores to allow universities to be more subjective and still have high averages
pirate787··on EFF is leaving X
Part of the replacement is declaring white Americans don't have a culture. Would you say the same about black Americans?
pirate787··on Artemis II Launch Day Updates
The center has already shifted to Musk, SpaceX is 83% of global lift capacity. Artemis is flying an obsolete rocket at insane cost, and higher risk.
pirate787··on Artemis II Launch Day Updates
Maybe more people should listen to Musk's political message. The Biden Administration was playing nasty games, blocking progress on both SpaceX and AI generally.
pirate787··on MoD sources warn Palantir role at heart of government is threat to UK security
No the downvote is from smearing an individual for the political activities of his grandfather.
pirate787··on 1B identity records exposed in ID verification data leak
While this leak may or may not have happened, for this type of exposure there should be criminal liability for developers and executives. Criminal negligence and prison time.
pirate787··on Pentagon formally labels Anthropic supply-chain risk
either you allow a democratically elected government to do everything they want that is legal, or you insert private corporate decision-making into every government decision which is untenable
pirate787··on We Will Not Be Divided
Your take is a call for civil war. You're obviously wrong about "treason" since even larger majorities voted for Trump in 2024.
pirate787··on I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a supply-chain risk
It's almost like the democratically elected government gets to decide the name, not Google!
pirate787··on I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a supply-chain risk
Don't deadname the Gulf!
pirate787··on Global Intelligence Crisis
He also elected the guy who did a 180 on AI regulations and stopped FAA harassment of SpaceX.
pirate787··on Recoverable and Irrecoverable Decisions
A big driver in increasing entrepreneurs in the US has been DEI and H1-B driven racism against white men. For example in 2021 only 6% of all the people hired by major US companies were white. An entire generation was locked out of traditional corporate career paths, and turned to startups and crypto.

pirate787··on US businesses and consumers pay 90% of tariff costs, New York Fed says
Plenty of Americans are ready and able to do the work if the conditions and wages are at the market rate. We're addicted to abusing the illegal immigrant underclass. Returning undocumented people to their homes is the moral issue of our time; Trump is ending a system of neo-slavery.
pirate787··on EU launches government satcom program in sovereignty push
Import substitution has failed consistently as an economic strategy.
pirate787··on Adoption of EVs tied to real-world reductions in air pollution: study
EV have far more tire wear because they are heavier and also probably from regenerative braking
pirate787··on Kroger acknowledges that its bet on robotics went too far

pirate787··on Hollywood's vision of ancient Rome is all wrong, according to Mary Beard
I agree but the argument is better framed as Mary Beard is a modern scholar with a rigid intersectional world view that is highly moralistic and highly judgmental from the perspective of modern norms around violence, feminism and racism. She sneers down on Roman notions of virtue and patriarchy.
pirate787··on SoftBank sells its entire stake in Nvidia
I doubled my bitcoin profit and got out at $1,000!
pirate787··on South Korea: 'many' of its nationals detained in ICE raid on GA Hyundai facility
The US military physically occupied and restructured the governments of Japan and Germany. A better example might be Vietnam, which has become a US partner but it took a couple generations.
