pipes··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
Citation needed on the costs vastly less to support and use.
pipes··on European industry is doing better than you may think
Does.not address what I'm asking. It's a blanket statement without evidence.
pipes··on European industry is doing better than you may think
Why do you think there isn't perpetual demand for cheaper goods and why do you think people in general are sick of cheaper goods?
pipes··on I'm the mom in that viral Giants clip. Let me tell you about my husband
A place for those who would be marginalised by their own community, gay, religious apostates etc etc.

Communicating with relatives on the other side of the world.

Maintaining old friendships that would have died due to distance.

Somewhere to find like minded people.

Somewhere like hacker news (I count it as social media top) where I discovered great books, expanded my horizons and learnt that there were other ways at looking at the world.

Anyway, it's not all bad :)

pipes··on Pentium II at 600Mhz with Voodoo 3 Emulated on 86Box with M6 Mac Mini
Sarcasm aside, this is why I'm asking: Snes cpu about 3mhz Vs 600mhz pentium 2.

As far as I'm aware emulation tends to be CPU intensive and can't really take advantage multi core . Is a M6 cpu core roughly 200x the performance of a 15 year intel core ? Something is wrong with my assumptions.

I desperately wanted a voodoo card (I was late to the pc party). I'd been playing lots of Goldeneye on the n64 and the gaming press had me convinced that real FPS shooters were on the pc not consoles. What a load of shite, I bought a voodoo 3 for my dad's pc, got quake 2 and was bitterly disappointed. Gameplay wise it was so limited compared to Goldeneye. The world was no were near as interactive. Recently I've seen gabe Newell talking about half life and the crowd bar hitting walls was their way of showing the player real world feedback. He's right, but that's nothing compared to the bullet holes in Goldeneye. To be fair, quake 3, unreal tournament 99 and Deus ex alone justified the voodoo card purchase, but it still felt like a let down.

When they say cycle accurate what do they mean? I thought even emulating a super nes in software at cycle accurate levels took a lot of compute?

pipes··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
I don't think it's fair to say that being anti large scale immigration is racist.
pipes··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
It seems the new definition of fascism is any political opinion that isn't hard left.
pipes··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
What racism? Seriously, what did he say that was racist!?
pipes··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
By "concerns" did you mean to say "I don't agree with some of his political opinions".
pipes··on Xbox continues its “reset” with dramatic restructuring
Laura Fryer, ex Xbox executive, her channel on YouTube has some really great insights into all of this.
pipes··on Cyclomatic Complexity in C#
I'm unsure if I have chain together something like

theThing() .map(someLamda) .filter(someLamda) .reduce(someLamda)....

Have I actually reduced complexity? I certainly prefer this over loops and if statements but does the pipeline and lamdas count as reducing cyclomatic complexity?

pipes··on Replacing Pull Requests with Delta
Why is "feels" in quotes?

Anyway, I'm probably being over cynical and yes it is worth exploring alternatives to the current system.

However I already feel overwhelmed dealing with agent chats. I can't currently see how this deals with the pr problem: If I am supposed to delegate to agents why do my conversations need reviewed by my peers. This feels like classic bad management practices of not trusting the staff below you to get on with it, instead turn up in every meeting.

pipes··on US Military had close call after using AI for hallucinated intelligence report
That's a very limited view of why ww1 started.
pipes··on Replacing Pull Requests with Delta
My first thought is, does this mean that along with the burnout I'm feeling with talking to my own agents I now need to try and consume and understand my teammates conversations with agents? Why is this better than a good pr description that distills completed work and explains why it was required ?
pipes··on Fujitsu launches made-in-Japan next-generation CPU FUJITSU-MONAKA
I'm surprised at the downvotes for this, does anyone think I'm misrepresenting the facts? I genuinely don't think I am.
pipes··on Fujitsu launches made-in-Japan next-generation CPU FUJITSU-MONAKA
Not trying to be obnoxious, but it's still Fujitsu.
pipes··on Fujitsu launches made-in-Japan next-generation CPU FUJITSU-MONAKA
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Post_Office_scandal

Their software is so poor that it caused probably the biggest miscarriage of justice in history. Well that and Fujitsu staff colluding with post office executives to put innocent people in prison rather than admit there was a problem

pipes··on Recreating Voodoo Graphics and a Late-1990s Gaming PC on an FPGA
Does mister work with kv260 boards "out of the box" or is the official mister target a de10 nano? (I love my mister, assembled oneba few years ago). I don't follow the project closely due to zero free time these days
pipes··on Dario, Please
Thanks. First time searching with my browser return no hits for shook no idea why

I can't find the quote in the article (and for anyone wondering which song "shook ones", which is an amazing track).
pipes··on How to buy a good car for $1000
They will not get as safe as cars. They are inherently dangerous, it's like taking a car and removing every safety feature. Removing doors, windows and belts. There's a reason that there is a legal requirement in many countries to wear a helmet.

I spent some time in Vietnam back in 2005, after getting a few lifts on the the back of mopeds in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, I decided to look up some road traffic accident stats for those cities: I never took another lift like that again.

pipes··on Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker (2003)
Reminds me of trying to download printer drivers or manual from Epson.

Actually motherboard manufacturers are just as bad.

Some god awful user hostile interface. Never just a direct link.

pipes··on GPT-6 Astra in code review: Gains, privacy, and cost
Mechanical code review by something like sonar qube is much cheaper. Use that for low bar quality gate and AI after.

AI code review is startlingly effective. Continually finding things me and my colleagues never would. Well the decent models do. Maybe not so much the cheap ones.

pipes··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
Who gets to decide which operating systems have provided a public good? What criteria? I want the law to apply equally.
pipes··on Show HN: Sesame - a local-first, open-source password manager
Nothing in particular. In my head all that needs to happen is some form of update (dependency, core project or the Android version on my phone) and sneaks in something that reads the unencrypted file and sends it over the internet somewhere.

I wish android and windows had flat seal, as far as I can remember that can prevent all network access for a given app.

pipes··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
My gut reaction to this is that there is something seriously wrong if special clauses are required. Why should open source get special treatment, to me that just highlights that the law is utterly ridiculous.
