pinjasaur··on Is my blue your blue? (2024)
Looks like there's an outage currently: https://status.skypack.dev/
pinjasaur··on I use Excalidraw to manage my diagrams for my blog
Last I checked on this the workaround is embedding CSS inside an SVG, here's a demo: https://github.com/sindresorhus/css-in-readme-like-wat

I used this on a personal project to add a README logo that is dark mode friendly: https://paul.af/github-readme-dark-mode

pinjasaur··on Lobste.rs/Hacker News links overlap
I like the visualization aspect. Curious how the data is being aggregated. Previously, I've used this as a source: https://gerikson.com/hnlo/
pinjasaur··on Text-Only NPR
D'oh, thanks — I use Pandoc plenty to MD -> HTML I totally spaced it can do the inverse. I was briefly looking at [Turndown](https://github.com/mixmark-io/turndown) for projects in the JS ecosystem.
pinjasaur··on Text-Only NPR
Curious, can you recommend a HTML -> MD converter?
pinjasaur··on Google scraps plan to remove third-party cookies from Chrome
I liked The Verge's article on this [1].

Sounds like they're doubling down on Privacy Sandbox [2].

I'm not convinced. FLoC and Topics API already (thankfully) didn't work out.

pinjasaur··on The Pitfalls of In-App Browsers
Author here. It was an interesting and fun article to write—a bunch of research and testing went on behind the scenes.

pinjasaur··on Show HN: Get notified when sites update their terms of service
I like how that's implemented, what are you using to generate the pretty plaintext colored diffs like that?
pinjasaur··on A salt monopoly could spike car accidents in the Midwest
Chiming in from the Midwest USA: cars manufactured with galvanized (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanization) metal seem to fair better in my experience. That said, galvanization isn't terribly common and as you mentioned, if you really care about your car you should store it in the winter.
pinjasaur··on Zola: A fast static site generator in a single binary
Metalsmith is pretty slick. I like how _everything_ is a just a plugin/middleware in essentially a pipeline. I've used it to template/scaffold [1] out projects before and it worked reasonably well.

pinjasaur··on Blog with Markdown and Git, and degrade gracefully through time
Plug for Blot[1] which makes it trivial to have a directory of Markdown source files and supporting assets (images, mostly) for my blog[2].

pinjasaur··on I Still Use RSS
I wondered the same thing. Turns out, there's a whole language for XML stylesheets: XSLT[1]. The stylesheet used to style that page is http://interconnected.org/home/static/styles/pretty-feed-v2.... (will probably want to view source).

pinjasaur··on How I Manage My Random Daily Notes
I have a script that functions very similarly, called `jot`[1].

I also have one for rapid steam-of-conscious thoughts[2] and organized journaling[3].

Personally, I'm a fan of the "plaintext files in a directory" pattern for notes, thoughts, and writing.

pinjasaur··on Ask HN: What do you do with your Raspberry Pi?
I run Pi-hole off a RPi Zero W on my local network. Set it up over Ethernet with a bit of cron automation [0] and later expanded Gravity (the blocklist) along with firewall NAT rules to redirect all DNS queries to go through the Pi-hole [1].

pinjasaur··on Commit messages guide
I find commits very relevant when grokking unfamiliar codebases. The history and changes (plus, how they're documented) are half the battle for me in that context.

The article mentions the use of line-length and commit-templates. Personally, I have my .vimrc [0] configured to handle columns for commits (50 for the title & 72 for the body). Then, in my .gitconfig [1] I set a template [2] to be used for all commits. It's a relatively minimal addition, but it's improved my CLI experience with Git immensely.

Edit: fix link formatting

pinjasaur··on Local Variables
I found the page layout extremely well-suited to grokking the content better. The right "sidebar" (in quotes because it's not a dedicated column, just emulated using CSS positioning) containing notes for the text & code along with figures worked great. I may have to look into recreating this kind of layout for my blog or other documentation.
pinjasaur··on Runnit – Make Terminal Shortcuts
Not _exactly_ true. You just need to re-`source` your dotfiles. For example, in Bash this looks something like `source ~/.bashrc`. I have this aliased to `src`, personally.
