piiswrong··on Japan PM’s solution to dire birthrate has already been rejected by young
Since the government benefit from more children (i.e. form more tax revenue in the future), how about let the government breed and raise childern with donated eggs & sperm, surrogate pregnancy, and public school & daycares?

piiswrong··on Apple's Power Move to Kneecap Facebook Advertising Is Working
Has anyone noticed that Apple tracks your app installs and use that data to show app Ads to you?

While Apple doesn't allow others to track users across apps, they themselves can do it because they have a monopoly on app store so it doesn't count as third party data.

piiswrong··on Tesla Announces a Humanoid Robot “Tesla Bot”
But if you really think about it, flipping rocket is a trivial toy problem in simulation. But useful humanoid robot is very hard even in simulation. Just look at some of the SOTA control theory research. Their simulated robots looks stupid.

blacks are vastly overrepresented in the prison population and NYC just forced them to bury COVID bodies with scarce protection.

> and, more importantly, is part of the same intelligence alliance

that's exactly why you shouldn't use American network equipment. The Canadian government cannot spy on Canadian citizens due to legal restriction. So instead it tells the CIA to spy on you and then share what they learnt through the intelligence alliance.

piiswrong··on Taiwan’s government bars its agencies from using Zoom over security concerns
US also used German companies for spying. So I guess there is no escape.
piiswrong··on Fed reinstates multi-trillion dollar bailout program for Wall Street
Because of fractional reserve banking. 90% of the money in your bank account are in fact credit created by the private banks out of thin air. If the banks fail, 90% of the money in the entire system will suddenly disappear. Imagine that.
piiswrong··on Fed reinstates multi-trillion dollar bailout program for Wall Street
but after the crisis do you give it back to the shareholders and let them brood for the next crisis, or do you remain a socialist forever?
piiswrong··on Fed reinstates multi-trillion dollar bailout program for Wall Street
But nationalizing private business is the symbol of communism! How dare you say such a thing!
piiswrong··on Fed reinstates multi-trillion dollar bailout program for Wall Street
Because they are more important than the goverment. If the big banks die the entire US economy dies with them.

Why Americans would let a few bankers wield such power and be accountable to no one is another question.

piiswrong··on Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions?
1. Next economic crisis will break down world financial order because interest rates cannot be lowered and QE is no longer effective.

2. Total meltdown of social & political order in middle east and latin america. EU and US face larger refugee floods like never seen before.

3. European Union dissolves.

4. Internet sovereignty becomes a common claim and at least one of FANNG will pull out of Europe and India

piiswrong··on How is China able to provide enough food to feed over 1B people?
more than 1/3 of Americans are obese. the US is one of the fattest countries in the world. Does that mean Americans are poor people who can only afford empty calories? wake up. people just like to eat unhealthy stuff when given the chance?.
piiswrong··on Chinese venture funding in U.S. startups has slowed under new regulatory regime
The firewall will disappear when China has a strong enough propaganda machine that can counter the western propaganda machine (think Hollywood & BBC). China has been working on it for a few years. Shouldn't take too long. Maybe a decade or so.
piiswrong··on Jailed for a Text: China’s Censors Are Spying on Mobile Chat Groups
the US is already shutting down "Russian-backed" twitter accounts that tries to "sabotage the government".

Who is to decide what's backed by Russia, eh?

piiswrong··on MXNet – Deep Learning Framework of Choice at AWS
https://developer.nvidia.com/cudnn Alex did it on 2x580 in 2012. Took him 1 week. It's 60x faster now even compared to K40
piiswrong··on MXNet – Deep Learning Framework of Choice at AWS
Amazon probably used P2 because they want to advertise it. We can get almost linear speedup on 10 8xM40 machines using MXNet. Batch size is linearly increased with # of machines but empirically it doesn't hurt convergence, at least on imagenet.

I mean who cares about AlexNet any more? It's 2016 already. It trains in under 2h on a single machine. Distributing it doesn't make much sense
